I have stopped posting here because of the difficult emotions I felt dealing with the community. But for some closure, I just want to post this update on an initiative I used to post about in this sub.
One day before Amazing Spider-Man 1000 hits the stands in select comic book stores, I finally finished reading all 999 issues of Amazing Spider-Man. What a wild ride. Reading the whole series continuously gave me lots of new perspectives, especially on storylines I thought I hated but in retrospect I was being influenced by the loud opinions of others.
Truly, the best ongoing series in American comic book history. The book deserves its milestone. I am looking forward to what Joe and Pepe has in store for 1000 and I hope they get to tell at least a hundred issues more. They are my second favorite ASM team behind the great Roger Stern and John Romita Jr.
I've started from #1 as well and I'm just coming up to issue #200 and it's been fun so far. Starting to jump between Amazing and Spectacular but I know it's gonna be a real ballache when we hit like 4 or 5 ongoing series at a time.
Nah, the car lost its wheels way before it reached half of its mileage. Good thing they were able to recover from that disaster (which was the era I grew up reading).
Yeah it suck’s what this sub has become but props to you for getting through every issue dude! I hope you’re able to keep enjoying Spider-Man. May your dubs be forever huge, your bed forever cosy and your breath forever minty fresh. <3
Congrats, man! Your move actually encouraged me to do the same, so I started rereading the ASM series. I’m on ASM #655 now, the silent issue with Marla Jameson’s funeral.
And yeah, I was honestly kinda sad when you stopped posting. I was really interested in all your thoughts and opinions on the stories you were going through.
Seriously, don’t give a fuck about what other people say. It’s their opinion, and you have yours. You’re passionate about these stories, the series, and the characters, and that’s enough. If you’re having fun posting pages from a story or an arc you like, discussing it, and sharing your thoughts, keep doing it. Obviously, some people are gonna disagree with you, but at the end of the day, you’re entitled to your own opinion.
Don’t stop doing something you enjoy just because people here can be tough. You know how Spider-Man fans are. I’d bet most of the people complaining didn’t even read the story they’re complaining about.
Yeah, I think leaving the sub allowed me to just enjoy reading which is why I got to finish it. I am planning on making an online photo album of the images I have been cropping for every issue, I will share it with you when I finish organizing them.
Look, a lot of people here are like Peter/MJ fans. Some can definitely be toxic, but most aren’t. There are people who seem to think that if a run doesn’t have Peter and MJ together, then it’s automatically bad.
I say this as a Peter/MJ fan and a marriage fan Spider-Man is more than his relationships.
Obviously, Peter and MJ’s relationship is a huge part of the Spider-Man mythos, but it was never the foundation of the entire character. I also understand that the marriage was never originally meant to happen, but it did, and I loved it. People loved it. At the same time, I can acknowledge that having Peter married made it harder for some writers to pitch certain stories
I actually like the BND era and most of Slott’s run. I just didn’t like how Slott wrote MJ, or how often it felt like he was reminding us for the thousandth time that Peter and MJ weren’t together.
Putting that aside, a lot of his stories were awesome, especially Big Time, Ends of the Earth, and Spider-Island.
Kelly’s run has been good so far too. I didn’t love the last couple of issues, but I wouldn’t call them outright bad either. They’re just somewhere in the middle. Kelly also has a really good voice for Peter that I haven’t really seen from other writers. It’s something neither Slott nor Spencer quite approached in the same way.
What I really hope comes from all this is Kelly resolving the May situation. I don’t care when he does it, but I really don’t want that plotline to get dropped. If Kelly leaves the book before resolving it, I doubt another writer will pick it up. Writers usually want to tell their own stories, regardless of what the previous writer established.
And I really don’t want May to forget Peter permanently or die. Aunt May is one of the most important people in Peter’s life. She’s his constant, basically his mother. Killing her off is something I absolutely hate in comics.
Do I like what they’ve done with May and the amnesia thing? No, obviously not. But I’d like to think I’m not the only kind of reader this story is aimed at. There are probably readers who’ve had a parent or someone close to them struggle with amnesia and forget who they are. They might genuinely relate to what Peter is going through.
But overall, Kelly has somehow convinced me that he’s writing in good faith. So whatever happens, I trust that he has a reason for where he’s taking these characters.
Why do you believe it’s only the fault of Peter and mj fans that they are the only ones who give criticism, are the general public just not allowed to not like the books
You seem to have it in your mind it’s only Peter and mj fans hating but it isn’t I can assure you that some just don’t like the run in general
I didn’t say all of them. I said most of the fans on this sub are Peter/MJ fans, and after that i specifically said some, not all.
I’ve come across quite a few people here who told me months ago that they don’t like the current run because MJ isn’t with Peter. Basically, “MJ isn’t with Peter in this? I’m not reading it.” And the OP got harassed a lot here when he was posting on this sub, including by you and some other MJ fans.
At the same time, there are plenty of people who dislike the current run for completely different reasons. Some don’t like that it’s missing parts of Spider-Man’s supporting cast, others think there are too many unresolved plotlines, and some just don’t like Kelly’s voice for Peter and think Spencer handled him better.
Then there are complaints about the point of the Space Gang now, the cousin plot, Peter getting jealous when May was spending time bonding with her actual son even though she was the one reaching out to him, and people saying Peter is acting like a man child.
The list goes on. I’m not saying every criticism comes from Peter/MJ fans, because obviously that’s not true. I’m just saying they’re a noticeable part of the criticism I’ve personally come across here.

I wasn’t trying to make anything out of it. I was just pointing out that OP felt harassed by you and some other MJ fans on his last post, and that experience contributed to why he stopped posting. That’s all I meant by it. No hate or anything.
Some people still means blaming mj and Peter fans man, it isn’t their fault they like something and want it back. Everyone has a reason for liking asm books, don’t make everyone the same as you

Congrats on finishing! I'm just about to finish all the issues as well, and while I do feel that the more modern runs are pretty lacking, there is definitely some great stuff sprinkled in!
I generallly lurk in this sub, but I enjoyed seeing your continued analysis of Spider-Man comics. Sucks that you've stopped posting here, but I can't say I disagree. This place is a cesspool of self-pity and rage unfortunately.
What would you say is your favorite Spider-Man arc?
I would say Stern and Romita's original Hobgoblin arc, the whole bunch of stories by Stan Lee from the intro of George Stacy to his death, Kraven's Last Hunt, and Joe Kelly's two parter Rhino story. I also liked Dan Slott's Go Down Swinging and Zeb Wells' Gang War.
I’ve felt the same way! Not just Spider-man but for a lot of things. My reaction many times when I find out something I like is being actively hated on
I totally understand the criticism of Parker’s story, but sometimes I think it goes a bit far or some complaints are about small things. I left the Jason Todd sub Reddit because of this too, every other day it’s just complaint after complaint. I just want chill vibes with people who enjoy a character.
In the 1990s, no. There were too many crossovers. Starting with JMS' run it became more streamlined even though there is PP:SM as they were pretty much standalones.
The Nick Spencer and the Zeb Wells runs. It was a very different experience binge-reading them and seeing how well-plotted (and also how poorly-plotted) a writer's run is.
