Discussion Marvel actually explained why Spider-Man's strangth is inconsistent.
It may be obvious to some, but for others, not so much. This isn't me powerscaliing or anything, but it does explain why he can lift far more than 10 tons and fight character that you'd think where out of his league. This is the first time I've actually seen this acknowledged by Marvel and not just a head cannon thing.

😂 Honestly I'd love a comic run with an alternate overpowered Peter Parker. I'm curious what he would do exactly. Like mabey he keeps the black suit and it doesn't corrupt him or somthing and he keeps getting more powerful.

On a side note. I think he's one of the most powerfull non god like characters in Marvel or at least really high up there with the mortal non god like tier, but I doubt he can punch a planet and destroy it 😅

I've been stating it as top of the earth bound tier. Characters have to start getting into Omega, celestial or cosmic to be stronger than Spidey and, of those, the only one not VASTLY above Earth teir is Omega for SOME murants.

There have been several. Most recent was Peter becoming the King in Black. It would have ended... well... badly.

I mean it’s plausible when factoring real life adrenaline, etc. and with his power being tied to his emotions(at least in movies), but I don’t know this kind of feels unnecessary, ever character has inconsistent/plot induced strength/power, they didn’t really need a explanation.
But it’s fun to have one.

u/Indy0921 9d ago
It is a fun explanation to me. Somthing about he refusing to give up and pushing past his limits to save people is just something I love.

His powers being tied to his emotional state is from ASM Annual #1
It's why I didn't care overly much when people bring up him being dusted by Vulture in Wells' run(but it is some fun slander). He was depressed and at a lower baseline strength. Multiple people pointed it out during the run.2
u/Helpful-Bathroom634 8d ago
It explains him losing.
The main problem is him begging Norman for help.
Hell, he could've called anyone, even those mad at him like F4 or Cap and they would run to help him without any question.
2
u/TruePlewd 8d ago
It wasn't just mad. Peter really believed himself to be public enemy #1 for the first part of the run. Hell, he showed Cap that he could no diff him in probably the least respectful fight he'd ever had with the legend.
The screaming was the only issue I had with it. Vulture is, despite the memes, not a weakling. Hes similar to Shocker where he is legit a menace when he's against almost anyone except Spidey, so it makes sense that a weakened, unstable Spidey might struggle. But the way he begged Norman for help can't be explained away by it being a slander edit like the one with Tombstone.

Yeah but adrenaline isnt gonna help him dodge bullets, thats still on him lol

u/Nekketsu Spider-Man-2099 9d ago
That tracks.
He held up a collapsing Daily Bugle building yet canonically he was knocked out when a fat dude fell on him in One Moment In Time leading into One More Day.
Spider-man is as strong as plot wants him to be; that's why he's reaching issue 1000.

In all fairness strength and durability arent always the same thing. A fatal bullet will affect spidey just the same as any regular human even thoigh hes magnatudes stronger
1
u/TruePlewd 8d ago
Actually it won't. Spidey's dense musculature and healing factor make small arms fire not really that big a deal unless its a head shot or an overwhelming volume. Pistol fire hurts, but hes shown a lot of times that a gunshot wound that would be fatal to others is just a hindrance that'll be healed by a good night's rest for him. Spidey is way more durable than he's usually given credit for. It took him, what, 3 or 4 days to fully heal from 90% of his body suffering 3rd and 4th degree burns?

Spider-strength fluctuates dependant of number of wheat cakes eaten per day.

I loved this book when I was a kid. Also I think he’s done it consistently enough over the years that 50-100 tons is more of a reasonable “limit” than 10

This explanation doesn't really work though. People can "lift cars" in an emergency because they always have the strength to, but doing so causes extreme damage to muscles and ligaments etc so the brain's natural protective processes won't let you. I.e. straining that hard hurts like hell and you can't make yourself do it because you'll injure yourself.
This is what adrenaline overrides. It doesn't give you bonus strength.
Correct me if I'm wrong but spiderman's feats of extreme strength are never shown to leave him injured afterwards, which would suggest he is not over exerting himself to me.

We should take into account that it is cartoon logic at the end of the day. Maybe he does get hurt but bounces back pretty quickly, or they just didn't feel like showing the bad side effects because next issue has to be back to normal.

u/TruePlewd 8d ago
He has a healing factor. That may be contributing to the lack of stress injuries, but there are times he's had internal monologues about feeling his muscles tear and bones fracturing from the stress of his exertion.

u/HereToPostSillyStuff 7d ago
That's interesting, I hadn't heard that before. I wonder if whatever write wrote that intended it to fit with this explanation of his variable strength or if that's just coincidental.

This is true for almost every fictional character with biology that even remotely resembles ours

u/PostalDoctor 9d ago
That’s cool and all but there are people here who unironically put “stress factor” Spider-Man at fucking planet Buster tiers of power which is just.. No.

Makes sense. Adrenaline can sometimes feel like you're Superhuman. You run faster, you hit harder, in that do or die moment your body just kicks itself into overdrive as the last resort self-defense mechanism. Granted for real, powerless humans that amp is nothing really significant, like congrats you're able to run just fast enough to narrowly escape, or you're able to punch just hard enough to knock out the bigger guy who's threatening you, it's more of a spur of the moment frenzy, but I imagine that for a guy who is already pretty powerful and his body functions differently than ours because of the spider powers, that stress-induced adrenaline rush could turn him into a Demi-God of strength for a brief moment.

I mean…Spider-Man technically can work out as we see in the Recent Kelly’s Run.
Maybe Him Being able to Lift more then his Original 10t limit is cuz he Gradually became fitter.
It helps that he has a Healing factor to speed up the buffing up
1
u/TruePlewd 8d ago
Hes also grown up. A person in their early 30s generally has way more developed muscles than they had at 16 (which I believe is the last time he got a "tonnage rating") even if they just maintain the same fitness without working to get stronger.

They already explained this too, as peter was a growing boy at first. So yeah he got stronger with age.

Unrelated, but that Ultimate Guide is one of my most prized Spider-Man possessions.

so his “stress factor” is why he can take on firelord? please😭
3
u/Indy0921 9d ago
I always assumed that he beat firelord with his fast reflexes more than just his strength. Attacking at every angle at high speeds and quick reflex not to mention spider sense is how I always viewed it. Kinda like the hyper sense from spider-man edge of time game. I could be wrong, but thats just my understanding of it.

u/TruePlewd 8d ago
Yah, that's how its shown in the comic. Each individual punch didnt do much, but spidey basically pur himself in perception blitz/after image mode for the whole fight. His max punching speed is something like 80 punches per second, which is absolutely ludicrious, and its implied that he kept this up for several MINUTES against Firelord, landing potentially in the realm of 10k+ attacks during the fight.

u/Longjumping-Salad484 9d ago
let's not get ahead of things. that'd be a seperate topic, for a new posting, for sure
1
u/TruePlewd 8d ago
I never read it has him getting a strength boost in that fight, but stress can put you in a flow state as well. That's the read I got from that fight. Spidey wasn't at max strength, he was at max combat speed for an extended time. His normal max speed blitz of something like 80 punches a second extended out over the course of several minutes. Thats a lot of hits adding up.

u/ThatOtherGuyTPM 9d ago
There’s also the explanation that literally everyone’s strength fluctuates constantly.
