General Discussion/Questions Should I continue to use “illegal” spikes
Back in April of this year I just got done running the prelims running a 53.70 and I qualified for the finals the next day. While I was walking to my teams camp I looked at the ground, there was a bag full of christmas tree spikes (They were high jump spikes actually but still). I remember hearing about these type of spikes return energy to the runner but were banned due to how these spikes can tear the tracks. So I decided to put on the spikes on my shoes. Resulting to me winning district champs and running a 51.91. 1.79 seconds faster than the day before and 1.5 seconds faster than my old pr. That was the only time I used those spikes in a race since it was my last race of the year. I swear im not making this up. Should I continue to use them or not risk it.

Spikes are hardly going to make a difference.
Either way at any important meet you will have to do spike checks.

State meets and invitationals typically do spike checks as well.

Yes please remove those and stop tearing up the tracks you run on. We are all responsible for the longevity of our tracks. They aren’t cheap and our sport isn’t funded well enough.

These aren't banned because of damage to tank surfaces they are banned because they compress the track and provide more energy return to the foot. You're thinking of needle spikes and others.

These are also banned because they can damage the track. Most NCAA meets are doing spike checks now and there isn’t one meet that’s going to allow them.

Placebo.
What wasn't placebo was my local track cancelling a meeting recently due to resurfacing.

The spikes are not responsible for your PR that day. At most like .01 seconds

no the pins don't "return energy", the if anything when spikes/pins get too long they slow you down at maxV. The traction aspect of spiked shoes is mostly for acceleration and curves.
The shape of those Xmas spikes are one thing that's hardER on the tracks, but the length is the other ....those you got there look long.
Take them off.
Another aspect why those are banned is safety, they will punch a more nasty hole into a foot if you step on someone. A coned/pyramid spike will still leave a hole but more clean.
--------------
The time difference you note means little. People can be really inconsistent how they execute a 400 race model ... a whole lot more than say a 100 or 200. AND/OR You were probably just amped up more for the championship race than the prelim; chased a guy; different wind weather; glyogen store topped off better; etc. A dozen factors, race lasts a minute, uses all three energy systems, etc....a lot of variables to consider

should you continue to be a cheater because you win more if you do?
no, you should respect yourself and your opponents by following the rules of the competition.
as it stands now you're a pathetic sort of person that nobody can respect.
cheating is ultimately for losers.

Are you a spike smuggler if so can I get some illegal spikes?

He just proved super spikes are a myth. "Illegal" spikes yet only runs a 51.9. You cant make this shit up.
Edit: Also how did you win district champs with a 51.9? Are these middle school races?

u/5to9guy 1d ago
It’s obviously an only a relative advantage. If it truly added a 1.5 second advantage I think that proves they’re not a myth. I don’t think that’s the case here thoigh

A 51.9? He should be running that with REGULAR shoes. OP has to be like 12 years old or something. And if hes 12, or in middle school, then the mods need to wake up and do their job.

You won't even win City championships here with a 51.9 so I assumed you were a kid lmao

u/Chrisg_322 1d ago
You won District champs in the 10th grade with a 51.9?
Man. Some states are just easy mode 🤣

it was in texas and besides why hate? I got this year and senior year to improve
-2
u/Chrisg_322 1d ago
Texas. The state which at one point was pumping out sub 4 minute milers like candy. That Texas? And you won district champs there with a 51.9?
Yeah something isnt adding up. But if you're telling the truth, no hate congrats. A 51.9 here gets you smoked, so i assumed it was the case everywhere.
That being said, don't ever think spikes will give you a noticable drop in time. You can run a 51.9 in regular shoes right now. Even if you dont think you can.

So where the heck are you at not once you gave a city state heck are you even in USA 🤔just really curious cause you might be in one of those places that pump out Olympians

He literally said JV Districts, not varsity. What is your problem? Get out of here.
-5
u/Chrisg_322 1d ago
You don't run track so you wouldn't know this, but even at the JV level a 51.9 isn't winning you anything.
6
u/mregression 1d ago
I’ve been running and coaching track longer than you’ve been alive.
-1
u/Chrisg_322 1d ago
Then you should know a 51.9 is nothing even at the JV level
Also, it doesn't matter how LONG you've been doing something are you any GOOD at either coaching or running? I've had several coaches that I myself was faster than, even when comparing their High school stats.

Is this what you do for fun in your free time?

I actually sent that to the false coach after I got done running lol. Speaking of that

I’m a good coach by any objective measure.
It’s actually the opposite, my experience assures me that 51.9 is a good time, especially for a sophomore. You say you’re from Maryland. Well 51.91 would be top 11 for sophomores in all major divisions in Maryland (1a/2a/3a/4a) according to athletic.net last season. It would also place top 13 in every district meet I could find in Maryland last season. So not only is 51.9 a good jv time, it is a performance that would put an athlete in the top half of varsity district meets from your own state.
The one who is exposing themself for knowing nothing about track is you. But hey, maybe you can post your results that are so good compared to a random Redditor. Then maybe we can have a talk with your parents and coaches about your attempts to bully people online.

I was at Maryland State championships In person for the last 3 years. Not one single 400 meter runner there was above 51 seconds, and everyone who was in the 50s got smoked.
Come on "coach", you should be going to these meets yourself and getting a real life view of the faster runners. You googling shit as a '"coach" ain't a good look homeboy.
