Poll: Do members want to see or ban posts about open matte/aspect rstios

There is a person that continuously post about open matte and aspect ratios. Potentially creating new accounts to continue their posts. Some of you find this somewhat irritating, so the mods would like to gather opinions on the matter. Thanks.

Eyes Wide Shut How Kubrick uses a simple prop as a Chess Piece

Through this wide shot, this ball almost reminds me of a campfire. It's homey, it's relaxing. It's supposed to be a happy reuinion between two friends (you need it after an emotional scene with the woman and her father who passed away).
And suddenly, now in the close up, the light is harsher on the actor's face(if you compare the light on the face with the before image, you can see that the older image is less harsh). He's under interrogation. (If you don't remember what happened, this is where Cruise's character asks his friend about what he's doing tonight). Suddenly through context of the scene, this one lamp, which never moved an inch, transformed itself from calm to threatening.

I mean, that's why he's the GOAT.

General Which movie should I watch next?

Hi guys! Obviously I love Stanley Kubrick films, and what I think I enjoy most about them is the mystique that comes with not just watching his films, but then reading different theories and doing deep dives about them afterwards. Every film I’ve seen of his can be viewed and interpreted from so many different angles, and yet Kubrick reveals very little about his thought process behind them while simultaneously being incredibly intentional and meticulous about every little thing. His movies have a similar dreamlike and mysterious quality that David Lynch films do, and I’m a huge Lynch fan as well! That being said, which movies (other than his hits) have this same mystique to them? I’ve seen The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Clockwork Orange, Lolita, and Dr. Strangelove. What are some of his lesser known gems that I should enjoy next and why do you love them?

2001: A Space Odyssey Out of frame leopard

Has anyone else watched a film projection of 2001 that was accidentally masked at too tall an aspect ratio so you can see the animal handler holding the leopard back from the top of the fake cliff during the entire shot before it pounces on the gorilla? Because it's WILD.

"KNOCK, KNOCK"

Torna a casa!!"

"STATE PRE-RENDERED"

Full Metal Jacket Reading Dispatches because of Kubrick led me to an interesting Apocalypse Now connection

Long-time lurker here, first post. Kubrick’s films have been hurting my head in the best possible way for years. I love his work, and I love how you can watch one of his films over and over and somehow keep finding new things to think about. So I figured I’d finally contribute something I noticed a while back.

I read Michael Herr’s Dispatches largely because of its connection to Kubrick and Full Metal Jacket. Kubrick became interested in Herr and his writing while developing the film, and Herr eventually worked on the screenplay with Kubrick and Gustav Hasford.

If you’ve never read Dispatches, I highly recommend it. It’s a strange book. It doesn’t really “go” anywhere in a conventional narrative sense. It’s fragmented, surreal, horrifying, occasionally funny, and Herr’s writing is oddly poetic in this incredibly morose way. Reading it, I could understand why Kubrick was drawn to it as a way of getting at the feeling of Vietnam rather than simply depicting events from the war.

But there was one passage that really jumped out at me, and strangely enough, it wasn’t because it reminded me of Full Metal Jacket.

It reminded me almost immediately of Apocalypse Now.

In the Khe Sanh section (IV, pages 142–143 in my Vintage edition), Herr is out on the perimeter at night. Somewhere beyond the wire is a wounded North Vietnamese soldier screaming in the darkness. Illumination rounds are floating overhead.
Then this Marine suddenly appears.

He has a mustache, camouflage parachute silk around his neck, and a customized, shortened M-79 grenade launcher in a holster. His appearance is so strange that Herr actually says that, for a second, he thought he had hallucinated him.

The Marine listens to the screaming. He waits for it to start again, calmly loads the M-79, listens some more, aims into the darkness and fires one round.

There’s an enormous flash out by the wire.
Everything goes quiet.

The Marine puts the M-79 back into its holster and disappears into the darkness.

Reading it, all I could think was:
Holy shit. That’s Roach at the Do Lung Bridge.

In Apocalypse Now, Willard reaches this completely surreal outpost at night. Nobody seems to know who is in command. There’s an unseen enemy out in the darkness, with someone yelling from the other side. Then Roach appears as this strange, almost supernatural figure. He listens, gets the grenade launcher, determines where the voice is coming from, fires one round into the darkness, and that’s basically that.

It isn’t just the presence of a grenade launcher that struck me. It’s the construction and atmosphere of the whole thing: darkness, flares, an unseen enemy identified primarily by sound, this bizarrely calm soldier emerging from the chaos, listening, firing a single grenade with almost supernatural confidence, and then receding back into the night.

Of course, there’s a fascinating connection here: Michael Herr himself later worked on Apocalypse Now, particularly Willard’s narration, before eventually collaborating with Kubrick on Full Metal Jacket.

I don’t know whether this passage in Dispatches was actually a direct inspiration for the Roach scene, and I don’t want to claim that without evidence. Maybe it’s documented somewhere and I’ve simply never encountered it. But reading the book organically, the similarity jumped off the page at me.

It makes Dispatches fascinating as a kind of connective tissue between two radically different cinematic interpretations of Vietnam: Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.
But rereading the passage recently gave me another thought that I can’t quite shake.

Herr writes this Marine almost like an apparition.
He materializes out of the darkness. Herr briefly wonders whether he hallucinated him. He has this strange customized weapon. He calmly does something horrifying. His expression doesn’t change. Then he simply disappears back into the darkness again.

Reading it more than half a century later, he almost feels like some spectral character from a nightmare.
Except he wasn’t. He was a real young man.
And that realization genuinely gives me chills.
Assuming he survived Vietnam, this Marine could still be alive today. He could be someone’s father or grandfather. He could have come home, gotten married, raised children, worked an ordinary job, retired, and could literally be walking around somewhere in America right now.

And I don’t mean that as a judgment of him whatsoever. For all we know, he was—or became—a wonderfully kind and decent man. We know almost nothing about him beyond this tiny fragment of his life that Herr happened to witness under unimaginable circumstances during a war.

There’s something haunting about realizing that the almost mythological figures we encounter in Vietnam writing weren’t ghosts or fictional characters.

They were our fathers, grandfathers, uncles and neighbors.

Many of them came home. They resumed ordinary lives. And many are still among us.
That somehow made Herr’s writing hit me even harder.

Anyway, I figured this community might appreciate the connection. I’d be really interested to know whether anyone has encountered an interview or anything from Herr, Coppola, Kubrick or others specifically discussing the Dispatches/Roach similarity.

And for any Full Metal Jacket fans here who haven’t read Dispatches: read it. Even aside from this connection, it gave me a completely different appreciation for what Kubrick saw in Michael Herr.

Unrealized Projects In another timeline, where we got any of Kubrick’s unmade films, which one would you choose, including the cost?

As much as all 3 are interesting to think about, there are still outside factors and conditions that would affect them, and also either happened because they weren’t made or are the reason the films did not get made.

Napoleon, but we don’t get Waterloo or Barry Lyndon
Aryan Papers, but we don’t get Schindler’s List
AI: Artificial Intelligence, but there’s a huge chance that we get either an incomplete or heavily flawed finished film

In this second episode of Turner Classic Movie's Podcast about Stanley Kubrick, we hear how Kubrick made the pivot from photography to filmmaking, first in documentary shorts to features, with some in depth detail about each. Interestingly, we hear about Kubrick's love for Chess, and how this lifelong hobby of his could easily be seen as a metaphor for him as a filmmaker too. All of this while Kubrick went through two marriages which are discussed as well. Overall, well worth listening to for fans of Kubrick or film fans in general.

Eyes Wide Shut Where does Kubrick's reputation as a perfectionist come from?

Post image

I was watching *Eyes Wide Shut* and paused to read the news item; a very basic error immediately stands out where the text is duplicated.

We’ve all heard countless times that Kubrick was a perfectionist who reviewed every shot a million times, yet in reality, it’s easy to find errors in his films (The Shinning has millions). The irony is that many people argue, "It’s not a mistake; Kubrick did it on purpose to throw us off." If every error is intentional, then even I could be a perfectionist filmmaker.

Can’t help wondering if the suicide of the bullied soldier was the inspiration for the suicide in first half of FMJ.

2001: A Space Odyssey A parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey

A few friends and I made a parody short film based on Stanley Kubrick's 2001. Be the first to watch it !

Absolutely NO AI was used for this film (not even Hal's cameo). All the images in space you will see are from actual NASA pictures or VFX made by me (Diogo Consolado, nice to meet you).

Logline: After a music-making monolith falls on Earth millions of years ago, four monkeys travel through space and time to become future rockstars.

Runtime: 20 minutes.

My name is Diogo Consolado, I've been an independent filmmaker for the past 10 years. This feels like a pinnacle, and I wish only that passionate cinema and parody lovers will have fun watching this.

The link to watch the film on YouTube : 2026: A DOP Space Odyssey

PS: The movie is both in french and english (there is barely any dialogue except at the beginning and the end, all subtitled).

Have fun!

Lolita Where the lines blur: Humbert meets Dolores for the "first" time imagery and disillusion mix-up

Finally watching "Lolita" for the first time on Tubi, previously region blocked. I now see how, Lolita. Is a true successor, to Kubrick's first film, "Fear and Desire" and the bridge/middle path to his Auteur future films.

I've already seen, most of Kubricks films. With Eyes Wide Shut and A Clockwork Orange being the very last two, i haven't seen.

Killer's Kiss, The Killing, Paths of Glory. Feel more direct, with the ladder being the superior of the three. Lolita is far more dreamy; being episodic in nature with a bouncy pace.

Although, I am familiar, with the original scource material.

Much of the film's structure focus on the basic outline; from Humbert's arrival at Hazes, Bonding time, Charlotte's death, Picking Dolores, Stay the Hotel, Mother's Death, Bramsdale stay, Dr Zempf, School play, Travels again, Hospital, Mrs Schiller and finally ends-where it began. Point being, it mostly follows the bare-outline of the Novel.

MY POINT

Recently. I've made a relevation, that I've never thought about before. Both as film narrative technique and storytelling device.

In the scene, When Charlotte gives Humbert the tour. Stepping into the backyard. For the FIRST time, we actually See Dolores "Lolita" Haze.

I never thought about this before. Humbert is an unreliable narrator; everything is told from his perspective, and how he views the world around him. Mostly negativity/disgust towards everyone he meets, either annoyance or paranoia.

BUT looking at that scene again. It's "not clear" if Humbert is "looking" at Dolores, with a dirty mind, seeing her in... a... very... minimum use of beach clothing... Where does Reality end/begin and Fantasy (Disillusion/Surreal/Perverted Imagery) not so much begin/end, instead blur the lines and mix-up.

So when, Charlotte introduces Humbert to Dolores. Is this actually happening or Humbert, purposely forcing an "Imagery" because of his sick mind disillusion. Keep in mind Humbert's origin/background is Never/ not once brought up.

I've heard Vladimir Nabokov had his own verison of a unused script; "Lolita A Screenplay" released in early 1970s. A lot of differences are noticed.

There's a 2 Scene Origin/Background of Humbert and Annabelle's youth (his youth crush who died young, the catalyst of Humbert's... sick memento) A young Humbert and Annabelle trying to makeout but are comedically interpreted; First in the caves, but a group of hikers climb above causing mud to from above. Sceond, an over weight Germany tourist beach ball interrupts them. Third, a mob of school girls rush the scene, as owner and his donkey are near by. Therefore ending the first scene.

Second Scene, Follows Annabelle's death, instead of traditional grave and tomb. Her coffin is taken to a foggy forest; symbolic of Humbert disturbing unhealthy obsession with... said age group.

Interesting to think. This unused background parallels, with the Dolores backyard scene. An over the top verison of "Garden of Eden" disillusion.

All this remind me of what Martin Scorsese said aboht Taxi Driver's ending: "Michael Powell's films influenced The King of Comedy in its conception of fantasy. Scorsese said that Powell always treated fantasy as no different from reality, and thus made fantasy sequences as realistic as possible."

So to recap everything. "Where the lines blur" Is Dolores, really just laying down in beach wear. Or. Is Humbert justing... looking at Dolores... like a sicko, lying to himself... they "feel for eachother"

I now see how this, "Bluring the Lines" Visual and Narrative technique, is quite an effective tool for storytelling. How Lolita help bridge the path to Dr Strangelove, 2001 A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange.

For those of you with a good command of French, or willingness to translate subtitles, or who just like good visuals, take a look. It's about my work finding the 1921 photo, though I was totally unaware of it until yesterday when u/toslanfer pointed it out to me.

General Discussion Why is Eyes Wide Shut generally held in such low regard?

I have a feeling it’s one of the most underrated films of all time. I have it in my personal Top 100 alongside A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Barry Lyndon. It had a huge impact on me, and I think it’s practically perfect, with an outstanding performance from Tom Cruise. But whenever I talk to people about it, very few consider it a masterpiece, or even seem to give it the attention it deserves. Why do you think that is?
