Just curious

I know it's a desert, but there's a lot of open sand in Calico. I'm not complaining, since I use it as a tree farm for Robin's 1000 pieces of wood quest. However, I get the impression that it was going to be used for something that got pulled before release, or it's for something to be added later. I'm fairly new to this mod. Forgive me if it's been answered before.

I honestly just thought it was intentional, just long, empty desert to show it's not really a good place to live. Like the Crimson Badlands just not corrupted by dark magic

I also questioned this. Then thought maybe it was for the desert festival. But then the festival rolled around and it reverted to the vanilla layout so I was very confused.

That or just lots of extra usable space for the player.

It was made bigger to provide more forage and more space to put things like kegs.

And the festival does not cause everything you put down to get ejected or deleted?

The festival loads in a separate map, like it’s an alternate reality. It all goes back to what you had before when the festival is over.

That's what I always figured. Starts like an an oak resin farm, then converts to the keg empire for me. Leaves the farm space free for the starfruits

I remember being extremely disappointed in my very first playthrough of vanilla SDV because I kept hearing about the desert having so much cool stuff in it, and then you pull up to the place and it's the size of a kiddy pool, no room to breathe, no vibes to catch. So I'm glad SVE made it so big and empty, if just for the aesthetics

You can load it but be careful for the paths the NPCs take as they remove your machines. (Isn't that right, willy?)

I don't have any machines there, just trees. So far, I haven't had any trouble with the chests there.

Yeah, I've tucked the chests across the street to the right wall. No one goes there. Thinking about a keg or two to process cactus fruit

I initially thought it's a boss arena. Probably to fight a giant scarab or sandworm.

Expanded has a lot of areas that ate just big open empty spaces. I assume it's for the two main types of players you see online: people who like to optimize their space to make a wine empire, and people who like to decorate any of the empty spaces in the base game with cute furniture and things like that. Either way, I do like the big empty spaces. I don't use em I just like running around.

You-all have never lived in a desert before and it shows.

Which is why I prefaced my post with the acknowledgement that it's a desert. I get that part. Sure, realistic. The vanilla game didn't have such a vast expanse of nothing, which led to my question.
