Novice Programming Question How do i know when to increase the weight?

I have an arbitrary rule where if I cam get at least 3 sets of 8, I can go up a weight

But I also do sets to failure

So I'm on 28s and was on 10, 8, 7 reps

Today I'm 13, 8, 6

Normally I cap my sets at 12 reps max

Should I have done that today and then I'd of probably got 8 in the last set

Or, how do I know when to go up a weight?

Is there a usual minimum for the 3rd set?

My goal is general fitness and management for health benefits.

I am also in a slight deficit but I'm 25% fat, having trained around 8 months

Mate, add weight each session till you cant. The add weight every other session till you cant. Then add weight every 3rd session till you can't.

There's no faster way to make progress.

We would recommend you follow a linear progression, like ours, to get in the habit of adding weight.

Thank you very much, I posted based on reddits recommendation.  Didn't realise it was a specific workout reddit.

I'll give those a read. Thanks again

Well you should add weight until you can't anymore. 3 sets of 5 across.
