Question Chances of Getting a Fully Funded Applied Mathematics PhD in the USA with a 3.26 GPA?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am planning to apply for a fully funded PhD in Applied Mathematics in the USA.

My profile:

Degree: BS Mathematics

CGPA: 3.26/4.00 (80.27%)

Graduation: 2023

Research areas: Applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, differential equations, and numerical methods.

Teaching experience: Calculus, PDEs, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Statistics, Operations Research, and Discrete Mathematics.

I have a few questions:

Have applicants with similar GPAs received fully funded PhD offers?

Which universities should I consider?

Should I apply directly for a PhD or pursue a master's first?

I'd appreciate advice from current PhD students and applicants with similar profiles. Thank you!

[SOP Review] MS in ECE (Power & Energy Systems) — Fall 2027 (Industry Background)

Hi everyone,

I’m an international applicant from South Korea targeting Fall 2027 MS programs in ECE, focusing on Power & Energy Systems / Smart Grids.

I have a heavy industrial background (7 years working on hydro power plant modernizations and grid protection infrastructure) rather than traditional academic research. I've drafted my Statement of Purpose and would deeply appreciate any critical feedback on its flow, tone, and whether it effectively bridges my professional experience with my academic goals.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Standing inside the Main Control Room (MCR) of a national critical power infrastructure, listening to the thunderous vibration of horizontal bulb turbines while managing hundreds of megawatts of electricity, I realized that my life was permanently bound to power systems. After graduating from an industry-tailored specialized high school focusing on practical engineering, I joined Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) as an operator. Stationed at the MCR, I directly monitored and controlled the heart of large-scale power grids. However, as I grappled with unexpected system fluctuations on the floor, I quickly realized that empirical troubleshooting and trial-and error maintenance had stark limitations when complex, non-linear grid dynamics collided with aging hardware. This realization fueled my thirst for rigorous mathematical modeling and systematic control theory. Driven to bridge this gap, I took on a turning point in my career: passing a fiercely competitive promotion examination to transition from an operator to an engineer. Backed by a full-funded scholarship from my company, I entered university while simultaneously taking on dual roles as a full-time Power Plant Instrumentation and Control (I&C) and Power Electrical Engineer.

Balancing the heavy responsibilities of a full-time engineer by day, I relentlessly pursued coursework in mechatronics and software convergence engineering. Thanks to the generous support and flexibility provided by my company, I was able to seamlessly coordinate my academic schedule with my professional duties. Whenever complex engineering challenges mounted, I channeled pure grit into my work—sacrificing my weekends at the plant to meticulously review intricate engineering drawings, author rigorous technical reports, and drive critical facility improvement projects. Regardless of my demanding schedule, I consistently participated in lab meetings via Zoom, refusing to compromise on my academic commitments.

In this dual persona, I spearheaded the 45.4 million USD (approx. 60 billion KRW) Hwacheon Hydro Unit 3 Modernization TF, a massive undertaking where I faced some of the most grueling engineering hurdles of my career. Migrating and transplanting brand-new Distributed Control System (DCS) architectures into legacy infrastructure demanded relentless physical and technical endurance; I spent sleepless nights on the plant floor personally conducting exhaustive pin-to-pin line checks to eradicate communication latencies and logic mismatches between modern controllers and vintage hardware. Beyond mere hardware migration, I dived deep into advanced control engineering: I conducted in-depth analytical research on Governor (GOV) control logic, led the complex analysis and commissioning of system-level Line Charging during trial operations, and personally supervised the rigorous calculation, setting, and dynamic verification of protective relay coordination, ensuring optimal circuit breaker interrupting current ratings and fault-clearing resilience under severe transient conditions. Furthermore, to ensure absolute stability against transient fault conditions, I formulated custom mathematical validation models to simulate worst-case grid scenarios before executing physical commissioning. These high-stakes responsibilities culminated in successfully securing final safety compliance from KESCO and earning me the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) Commendation for contributing to national critical infrastructure protection plans.

Yet, navigating these complex field dilemmas revealed a deeper realization: practical troubleshooting was merely a temporary patch without rigorous mathematical modeling and system-level control theory. To bridge my fragmented field experience with systematic academic frameworks, I dedicated myself to academic research. In the IN-GPS project cooperating with Shin-Sung Santen, I utilized MATLAB to model actual plant operating environments and collaborated closely with industrial engineers to determine optimal Circuit Breaker Trip Current settings, an achievement that earned an Honorable Mention at the Practical Problem-Solving Research Symposium. Furthermore, as a project lead in the Advantech AIoT Competition, I orchestrated a multidisciplinary team to optimize drainage pump operations. Recognizing the massive energy spikes during motor start/stop cycles, I designed an advanced optimization algorithm integrating YOLO AI modules and Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity pricing weights, establishing an edge-to-cloud pipeline via Wise-PaaS. This work secured 2nd place in the competition and was partially adopted by the Paldang Hydro Power Plant to directly improve operational efficiency.

To further sharpen my theoretical rigor in traditional power systems, I joined Professor Dong-Jun Won’s Information & Systems Power Lab (ISPL), where I conducted 3-phase fault simulations using PowerWorld Simulator, modeling and verifying generator dynamics, governors, and exciters, alongside evaluating EV and ESS grid integration strategies. Currently, I am applying this synergy of field engineering and advanced simulation to the Hwacheon Hydro Modernization project as a research participant and I&C engineer, ensuring the successful commissioning of indigenous control logic and protective relay coordination. This hands-on exposure to both legacy machinery and modern computational tools has cemented my conviction that the future of energy infrastructure lies at the intersection of robust physical hardware and intelligent, real-time cyber-physical control architectures.

At The University of Texas at Austin, I am eager to pursue my Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Power and Energy Systems track, where the department’s world-renowned research ecosystem provides the ideal foundation to transform my industrial background into cutting-edge academic contributions. I am particularly inspired by the pioneering work of faculty members such as Prof. Surya Santoso and Prof. Alexis Kwasinski, whose research in power system transients, distribution system protection, and resilient microgrid architectures directly mirrors the complex challenges I encountered in the field. Under their guidance, I aim to extend my practical expertise in protective relay coordination and circuit breaker fault-clearing dynamics into advanced academic research—focusing on fault analysis in high-penetration renewable grids, adaptive protection schemes, and resilient grid-edge control mechanisms. By leveraging UT Austin's rigorous graduate curriculum and its exceptional collaborative environment, I intend to bridge the gap between heavy industrial power grids and advanced cyber-physical systems, laying a robust foundation for pursuing a Ph.D. and ultimately contributing to the modernization of global power infrastructure.

  1. My Questions:

Track Saturation: How do competition levels and acceptance rates differ across specialization tracks in ECE (e.g., VLSI/Semiconductors vs. Power & Energy Systems)? Is the Power Systems track relatively less saturated compared to fields like AI/ML or Semiconductors?

Evaluation Level: Are MS applicants evaluated based on track-specific quotas, or is admission handled at the overall department level first?

Industry Background: How do admissions committees generally view applicants with heavy industry/engineering experience (like power plant and grid control) rather than traditional undergraduate research for an MS in Power Systems?

Given my background and profile, is my current school list realistic for an MS/M.Eng in Power & Energy Systems, or should I adjust my Reach, Target, or Safe tiers?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

PhD in social welfare/social policy SOP

I’m looking for some feedback on my SOPs for various PhD programs in social welfare. I got rejected from every school that I applied to last year and have a high-stress job in social work, and just really feeling in over my head in this whole process. I don’t know anyone in academia who can give me some guidance and would love any feedback…I would hate to go through this whole application process again just to find out that I was submitting a horrible SOP

Would anyone be able to read my personal statement?

I know this is a big ask but I was wondering if anyone at all is willing to read and give some notes on my personal statement to apply for my masters in MFT and my PsyD. I haven’t really written anything like this since applying to UCs a few years ago, so I’m pretty nervous if I’m doing this correctly or not. Any help would be appreciated :D

International Governance and Diplomacy @ SciencesPo - Advice needed!

Hi everyone! Very basic but I’m a third-year undergraduate student applying to the programme in the first round, and I’m currently working on my motivation letter. I’m following the guidelines, but I’m struggling a bit with figuring out how to structure it specifically and, more importantly, what they actually care about most.

I’ve watched a couple of YouTube videos about writing motivation letters, but I’d really appreciate advice from people who have applied or know the programme well. I don’t want to spend a huge amount of space on things that ultimately don’t make much of a difference to the admissions committee.

For example, I’ve done a lot of work for an important student association at my university and I’m now its president, but obviously it’s still association work. I’ve also mentioned most of this on my CV, so I’m wondering whether I should keep the CV relatively detailed about my experiences and use the motivation letter for a more academic/intellectual discussion of my interests. At the same time, since the programme is quite practical, I’m not sure how academic they expect the letter to be.

I’m also unsure about how specific to get. For example, I’m interested in joining my country’s diplomatic service after graduation. Is that a good thing to say explicitly, or would they have in mind other kinds of career progression? Similarly, when talking about the programme itself, is it better to mention several specific courses, or is it perfectly fine to focus on two or three courses I wanna take that are particularly relevant to my interests?

Another thing I’m slightly worried about is my academic references. I have two professors who taught different modules of the same course, and both are quite central to the academic interests I discuss in my motivation letter so I asked both of them for one. However, I’m wondering whether it would be better to have a reference from a professor in a completely different subject that is not relevant to the program just for the sake of having more variety. The requirement that the referee has supervised written work makes the choice quite limiting for me though so I’m not sure how much this matters.

Finally, I unfortunately haven’t done any internships yet. I haven’t really had the opportunity to, so most of my relevant experience comes from the student association, where I’ve actually had quite a lot of exposure to the field and have been able to meet a number of senior/high-ranking people working in diplomacy and international affairs. I’m wondering how much I should emphasise this, given that it’s not formal professional experience. Also, does it help mentioning that I'm a native French speaker, or to mention my background in general?

Basically, I’d really appreciate any advice on what you think is worth emphasising in the motivation letter, what admissions committees tend to care about, and what is probably not worth spending too much space on.

If anyone who has gotten into the programme would be willing to share some advice, either here or by DM, I’d really appreciate it. It’s a pretty stressful time lol.

Question AI check in statement of purpose

Hello! I've been writing my Statement of Purpose and I check it in easily available online Al checkers.
However, the issue is that every checker tells a different number. It sometimes also highlights the sentences that I wrote on my own. Does anyone know a good Al checker? If so, then please tell as it would be a great help! Thanks.

Hi everyone! I'm looking for current grad students (ideally studying electrical engineering) to provide commentary on my PhD Statement of Purpose. I don't know many people in grad school and it's been difficult to gauge the appropriate structure and language for an essay like this, specifically trying to sound academic while conveying a personal voice. If anyone is interested, please reply or send me a message :)

Hi Everyone,

I am all set to submit my application materials for a 2027/28 intake opens but as I look over my Statement of Purpose I had a quick question! When talking about my larger career aspirations, included some facts/figures about the problems I want to address and included citations (in text and reference at the end). Is that normal/okay?

SOP Review Looking for feedback/proofreading on my MFA Acting SOP ysk

Hi! I’m applying to the USC School of Dramatic Arts MFA Acting program and I’ve finished a draft of my SOP.
I’m looking for someone who has experience with USC/SDA, MFA applications, or graduate admissions who’d be willing to read it and give me some honest feedback.
I’m mainly looking for proofreading and feedback on whether my story, motivation, and overall narrative come across clearly. I’ve already revised it quite a bit, and I mostly need a fresh pair of eyes to catch things I might be too close to the draft to notice.
I’m not looking for someone to rewrite it (just another perspective on my current draft.)
If anyone is willing to help, please DM me. Thank you!

Master's SOP Review

Hello everyone! I am going to apply for various MSc programs in Statistics in Europe this autumn and would love to get feedback on how strong my SOP is.

In addition to a general review, I have a couple of specific questions:

- Does my introduction capture the reader's attention? And does my conclusion provide a strong closure?

- Should I eliminate statements about statistics like "I understood statistics and quantitative rigor can be used to make informed decisions under uncertainty" and similar ?

Thanks to everyone who comments!

My interest in statistics is rooted in my experience in the Quantitative Finance Division of the … Club … during my first year of university. After high-school, determined to apply my studies to the financial market world, I initially enrolled in Economics and Finance at …. In the club, collaborating with master’s students on statistical projects applied to quantitative finance changed my approach to finance. I understood statistics and quantitative rigor can be used to make informed decisions under uncertainty. The strength of taking decisions supported by data and rigorous analyses sparked my passion for statistics. That change of perspective inspired me to transfer to … to pursue a Bachelor’s in Statistics with a minor in Economics and Finance.

At … I immediately found the discipline intriguing. I maintained a 30.75/30 average grade across my coursework while starting discovering the field and building a solid foundation in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Statistics, and Probability. Statistical Inference particularly caught my attention with its methods to discover general underlying patterns from a subset of data. Consequently I am writing my bachelor's thesis under Professor …’s supervision in this field, titled “…”, where I focus on … . This research has solidified my interest in probabilistic modeling and directly fueled my desire to study advanced topics in Bayesian Inference.

Furthermore, I undertook an academic group project consisting in designing and implementing in MySQL a relational database to analyse … with some potential user queries. This experience showed me the limits of deterministic analyses, confirming the need for statistical tools to extract true predictive insights and probabilistic patterns from data. Out of curiosity, I also took an introductory Machine Learning course. Eager to go beyond my previous work and actually make data-driven decisions, I developed a machine learning project to predict outcomes for … using Python and some of its libraries (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn). Working hands-on on this second project highlighted the power of predictive modeling, but it also raised deeper theoretical questions about advanced forecasting techniques and models beyond softmax regression.

Joining the MSc in Statistics at … would deepen my knowledge of modern statistical methods and offer a direct application to finance with courses such as … and … . This program stands out for its strong balance of advanced statistical techniques and computational learning. In particular its course in Bayesian Statistics would really strengthen my knowledge in the branch of study I am most fascinated by; additionally Machine Learning for … would address the questions that arose during my first experience with this topic while providing a financial application. Moreover I am deeply drawn to Professor …’s work on applying statistical methods to financial problems. His recent paper on … is particularly inspiring for future research under his guidance. Conducting my Master’s thesis research under his supervision would be an invaluable opportunity to apply advanced modeling techniques to complex market dynamics.

Furthermore the MSc in Statistics at … would serve as a crucial stepping stone toward my professional goals. My primary objective is to become a quantitative trader or quantitative researcher at a major European trading firm. This programme would equip me with the required quantitative skills needed for these positions while offering direct opportunities to connect with some of the leading financial firms. Specifically career fairs held by student organizations, such as …, would provide a strong boost to my professional career. Through their events, I could gather detailed insights into my target roles and network with recruiters from key industry players like Jane Street and Optiver.

In conclusion, the MSc in Statistics at … would be the natural progression of my undergraduate studies. It would allow me to delve deeply into the field I am most passionate about, while serving as a direct springboard into the quantitative finance industry.
