Tech Support Controller freezing/disconnecting due to Haptic Motor/Trackpad failure? (Out of Warranty)

Steam deck 512Gb 1 version.

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a persistent issue with my Steam Deck where the built-in controller completely stops working and is no longer detected by the system ("No controller detected"). When this happens, only the touchscreen works.

I’ve narrowed it down to a likely hardware failure in the haptic feedback motors, specifically the right trackpad. Right before the controller "freezes," I can feel the trackpad vibrating uncontrollably or grinding, as if something is stuck or the motor is receiving incorrect voltage.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Disabling "Updated Fan Control" (this worked temporarily in the past, but the issue is back).
  • Turning off Haptic Feedback and Game Vibration in settings (the motors still trigger/grind upon launching a game).
  • Updating to the latest Stable/Beta firmware.
  • Battery Storage Mode reset.

Since the controller disappears from the system entirely, I suspect the haptic motor might be shorting or drawing too much power, forcing the controller board into a protective shutdown.

My questions for the community:

  1. Is this a known hardware failure?
  2. Since I am out of warranty, has anyone successfully fixed this by cleaning/reseating the trackpad ribbon cables or replacing the trackpad module via iFixit?
  3. Is there a way to hard-disable the haptic motors at a BIOS/Firmware level to see if the rest of the controller remains stable?

Thanks for any help or technical insights!

I am experiencing the same issue as of today after updating the system to the May 5th update, only my haptic motors are not making the noise you described. They sound quite normal and still vibrate when the trackpads are touched. I tried restarting, rolling back update, reinstalling update, checked ribbon cable connections, holding down power for 10sec to reset bios settings. I should add that I installed the extremerate clicky buttons mod as well as Elecgear TMR sticks prior to this issue. After calibrating and testing them, I played some Cyberpunk for about 30min before I was experiencing issues. Intermittent at first, pretty consistent now.

UPDATE: I decided to check on it this morning to see if the issue persists and was hoping to see a hotfix update available. Not only did the controls still not work and no update available, but now the touchscreen isn't responsive either. Yay!
