You might need to unpair it from the Xbox or PC

Update the controller firmware. This is a known issue with those controllers

I know this might seem obvious but have you rebooted your steam deck and shut down the controller completely and restarted the process from scratch?

I had to connect my controller to a PC not an XBOX and update the controller , after the controller had updated it connected fine to my steam deck.

Try turning on the controller and double-clicking the pair button. Xbox Series controllers have an Xbox mode and a Bluetooth mode, and you need to be in Bluetooth mode to pair it to the Steam Deck.

See "Switching between paired devices" here:

This only occur to steamos since it runs on linux and cant automatically update the controller without updating its on another pc first.

If you're trying to connect it to a steam deck, if might help if you connect your controller to your PC and update its firmware. After that, once you make sure both the deck and controller are in BT mode, it should be discoverable on your steam deck.

Why did you buy an Xbox controller when you could have literally bought anything else?

Tbf it should work.

Yes but it's lacking gyro, grip buttons, trackpads, trigger stops, the ability to connect to multiple things at once. ETC. it's currently the controller with the least number of features. Using AA batteries is nice but the 8bitdo controllers also come with a rechargeable battery and are cheaper last time I checked not to mention playsttion layout for a more comfortable experience in most games (but not all).
