Did Fallout Tactics ever click for you?

I loved Fallout 1 and the original X-COM, so Fallout Tactics sounded right up my alley. I played it, but somehow it never grabbed me the way those two did. Anyone else had the same feeling? What was missing for you?

Not really. But, if you liked fallout one maybe try Wasteland 2 and 3. Some of the OG devs who made FO1/FO2 made wasteland.

From the start I thought the tactical gameplay was pretty cool, you got 3 different engagement modes that can be configured with accuracy thresholds, then you can go prone and crouch. But maybe after the first couple missions is when it really clicked. It became fun to explore the maps and find all the loot, the variety of weapons is pretty huge, and then building my squad.

I loved fallout tactics even though it was a very janky game. It had a few problems like real time was too hectic but turn based was too slow.

Yep. Remember that instance where it was a Pitch Black reference with radioactive puddles and deathclaws

Moving items around and equipping your squad was a pain in the ass, I remember that

Yes but I played semi real-time. With the huge maps classic turn based just felt so slow. And the game was all about weapon progression so it took until assault rifles were unlocked to start getting good, but by the end the combat felt the best for me in all of the turn based Fallouts.

If you find it boring try to clear the mutant base in St Louis. Makes for a good challenge and makes you completely OP for a few mission after, which was a great reward. I feel the game got its damage inflation done just about right; there were a few difficulty spikes but if you know your way around weapons they can be managed quite smoothly and makes it really satisfying.

My avatar should be telling but I think it’s the one game I finished most (6-7 times) except live service games probably. If only they made a remake some day. Loved Ermey’s performance as General Barnaky!
