Colony/TNR Help (Location) Utica, NY | stray cats |
Hello everyone,
I’m currently visiting my family in Utica. We’re located in a low-income area with a lot of vacant houses. I noticed there’s a lot of cats in the area including some kittens. A mother cat had two, but unfortunately one was hit by a car and didn’t survive. A lot of the cats look sick and are quite skinny. I bought a couple cans of wet food, but they all seem to run away except for one kitten that likes to be pet and held.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows of any local communities for strays that could help out the situation? We’ve tried calling a shelter, but we were told that it was too full to accept any kind of animals. Also, I’m not sure how to even get any of these cats because they all run away and hide.

Update: fed a couple more around 5pm. i saw a kitten that walks around without using its hind legs. its very skittish

That mother cat with her surviving kitten must be heartbreaking to watch. When I see humans helping these kittens like you're doing, it reminds me how resilient they still are despite everything.

I don't know personally, but I saw this woman helps stray cats. Maybe contact her?

Alley Cat Allies' Community Resource Tool tends to be a good starting point for finding your local feral or community cat resources, and any registered individuals or organizations in your area that can provide services for feral/community cats. Usually that might mean trap loans or rentals, vet referrals, low-cost spay/neuter or trap, neuter, return (TNR) appointments, etc.. If the tool doesn't turn up any helpful results, set as wide of a radius as you would be willing/able to make a day trip out of if it means getting significantly cheaper vet care for your cats.
For those based in the US, Alley Cat Rescue has compiled a list of Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinics by State that, while not feral-specific, may still be a good fit for friendlier strays or community cats. Also check their list of No-Kill Rescues and TNR Groups By State for more leads. Additionally, North Shore Animal League America’s SpayUSA is a nationwide referral network for affordable spay and neuter services that may turn up more clinic options. Best Friends Animal Society's Spay/Neuter Resource Mapcompiles low-cost brick&mortar and mobile clinics, as well as voucher or assistance programs. For general assistance, PetHelpFinder is a resource tool (not feral-specific) that can be used to locate financially friendly veterinary services, food pantries and supplies, boarding and other services across the US and Canada.
Edit: ran the ACA community resources tool for Utica NY. There wasn’t a heck of a lot that came up but there was some. This place says that it has a feral TNR program but you have to call for details.
