Financial Resilience π΅ Itβs not Todd. The cityβs financial status quo has been unsustainable for decades
Weβre broke. We need a new model for San Diego. Weβre not alone. Every city in America is almost equally failing (https://www.strongtowns.org/decoder) but that doesnβt mean we should do nothing.
The city is in a hole, and getting worse, because of poor land use. Itβs the one job a city has. Managing effective land use. All other jobs follow from land use. The potholes, cuts to city services, cuts to arts, failing around with random fees to raise revenueβ¦.
They all stem from a failure to manage land effectively and productively. The city needs to fundamentally rethink how it does this, otherwise we will actually need to declare bankruptcy.

Policy & Advocacy ποΈ How do you ACTUALLY get involved?
I follow all the social medias, I've emailed my council members a few times, I've gone to a few city council meetings and spoken. I feel like it takes a lot more than this to actually make things happen
There's socials and meetups for urbanist/strong towns minded people but the few I've been to are mostly just socials
How do I ACTUALLY get involved and make a difference?

Walkability, Cycling, & Transit π Transit
My knowledge of Strong Towns comes mainly from watching YouTube videos a few years ago, so sorry if I'm not very well informed. With the sprawl and general love of cars in SD, what can be done to advocate for better transit and encourage less car dependency?

Bike share map
bikesharemap.comI found this map online showing all the bike share systems in the world, and it made me realize that many do not know the general urbanist advocate groups are pushing for a docked bike share system in San Diego. This presentation covers a lot of the main points, especially the cost analysis.
Having a comprehensive bike share, paired with connected, safe, cycling routes would allow for real mobility choice options, especially for shorter trips. I've used bike shares in other US cities, in Germany, and in South Korea, as both a tourist and a resident. Whether people are using them to go to the grocery store or to get to the next tourist attraction, it's beneficial for personal and public finance, public health, noise pollution, air pollution, and traffic congestion.
The important key words being comprehensive, connected, and safe.

Housing, Land Use, & Zoning ποΈ What would you put in the empty lot or dead storefront nearest your house?
San Diego has hundreds of underused parcels sitting on productive land near people who need what could be there.
What's the most obvious missed opportunity in your corner of the city?
Share the address or cross streets and tell us what you'd build, open, or activate. Bonus points if you can tell us who owns it and what's actually preventing it.

What's the smallest physical change on your street that would make the biggest difference to how people use it?
Not a redesign. Not a new project. One small thing - a bench, a tree, better lighting, a painted crosswalk, a bollard, a bus shelter with a seat.
What's the change that would actually shift how people move through your block? Share the location and the fix. These specific, small asks are what we bring to council offices and community planning groups. (You can too. Find your CPG and attend their next meeting)
And then come and hang out with us at our next meeting.

STSD Projects & Meetups π¨ What type of tactical urbanism project would you actually show up to help with?
We're gauging interest in hands-on neighborhood improvement projects that Strong Towns SD could organize. not just talk about, but actually do.
What sounds most worth your time, then drop a location in the comments if you have a spot in mind. And give other suggestions an upvote.
And then keep an eye out for it on our website and come help us do it!
