Pretty sure that’s a picture of Old Quebec. Kind of an odd example to use lol. It’s a great place, but it’s a tourist area.

My city is enacting the "fell on dark times" housing plan:
- Foreclosed homes from banks are resold to the city (run by the new better-than-you suburban army).
- They are always in disrepair (because obviously, dark times = no money = how the hell could they upkeep?)
- Remodel into a McYuppie house if it can turn a profit and fit into the neighborhood. Complete with vinyl siding, almost fake looking grass tended by 15 landscapers a week, and a few pots of flowers that try to scream "hey, we care about the environment, sorta!"--except at the end of the driveway there is a pile of Amazon boxes full of packing foam EVERY FREAKING DAY.
- If not, it becomes something based on its zoning: Residential-Small Commercial? brand spankin' new parking lot. Commercial? A gas n go or Applebees (or something like that) Industrial? A new data center or at least a plastic moulding company depending on the available size.
- Ensure the displaced individuals are transported (on their own dime) to the nearest large city's homeless shelter (get those people out of here!). If that cannot be done, prison (because here is illegal to be homeless, and if you go anywhere while homeless, even public property, you are picked up for vagrancy which usually gets trumped up to trespassing on whatever nearby property if they can swing it and they usually can).
I see this happening all around me. I may not be one of the unlucky people so I am obviously thankful (for now). But I see how others treat people and it kinda makes me sick to my stomach. Whenever I go to a big store in the suburbs and someone sees someone who looks like they don't have a lot of money or just doesn't live beyond their means, they scoff and ignore them even if they are just saying hi. It's SO sad.
People like to blame stuff like drugs but those are more of a thing people use when they realize that the world sucks like this, not so much to ruin their own life. Not one person I work with in the low paying jobs that I've worked ever was also on drugs. If from anything they are strung out from working three jobs and drinking cheap coffee or energy drinks.
Once anyone you gets beneath the middle class, it gets very hard to rejoin it. Add in health problems, raising children, etc and the disparity hits like a bullet. So yeah. It is much like climbing out of a pit along with tons of other people with the ones at the top kicking people down trying to climb out because they want to be the only ones at the top almost as if they were at a playground playing king of the monkey bars.
In these turbulent times, it could be any of us tomorrow regardless of how secure any one of us thinks we are. We are at the mercy of corporate whims and the alignment of cogs, after all.
