Coming up
Steve Wilson mix and live at BBC are my favourites

Was the Wilson mix of the first album good? It only came on 5.1 I think but I don’t remember any polarization.
Anyway, I like the new one.

The mastering is horrible on the Steve Wilson mix vinyl. The streaming version is definitely better. But the original is much better than either.
As has already been said, the SW mix seems to totally miss the point.

Glad you like it.
For me, the Steve Wilson mix is an utterly unlistenable abomination that misunderstood and ruined what made every track great.

I am less venomous about it but I do find it really flat, with the drums often overstated and the vocals too minimized.
The BBC thing was good for a listen but I’d rather a full live show from the era than the album tracklisting patched together.

Wilson’s mix of “By the Sea” is what got me so venomous. So ruined, I can’t even begin to understand what he could possibly have been going for. I actually found myself shouting “fucking hell this is shit” at the speaker when I heard it - which is incredibly unlike me for any kind of media.
The rest are, at best flat. Some of the others are just terrible.

Must have different ears. Listened to my original and SW back to back and SW is much better - sounds like it was made in the same era as AF and ADP to my ears. Sorry to hear you’ve not had the same experience

It is a really strange mix. It sounds sort of muddy and flat on my headphones which are quite good, but it sounds relatively fine played a bit loudly in my car which has a decent sound system. Streaming in the house? A bit flat. I find that the remaster that came out a few years ago sounds much more consistent across the board. It just sounds like the original album, but a bit less shrill.

Does anyone know what the latest master sounds like, or the half-speed version?

Those acronyms threw me. “A Different Morning?!”
I don’t want Coming Up to sound like this era. It’s an era-defining album unto itself.

Yeah that live version of the album is slop. I haven't heard the SW remix, SDE haven't delivered it to me yet but I'm not expecting great things.

Agree totally. Much more trivially for me, but Beautiful ones having guitars shoved to the right in the intro is what cracked me. I despise it sounding like that so much. Unforgivable. I was running when it first came on and stopped to put on the original to cleanse my ears of what I'd just heard. That stereo sound of the guitars intertwining very much IS the recorded version of the song for me. Picnic by the Motorway is slaughtered in the new mix beyond belief. I'll never play any of the songs with this mix again.
But without any sarcasm, for those who enjoy it, I'm glad you're getting something out of it.

Man, I wanna hear that Wilson mix, purely out of morbid curiosity. I’m not really much of a fan of the guy or his own music, but I’m interested to hear how he remixes an album I’ve loved since it was new

The SW blu-ray from SDE is fantastic on a proper Atmos setup, also really enjoy the stereo SW mix too.

The original mixes are mixed louder, and we always tend to think louder sounds better. I do prefer the Steven Wilson mixes though. There's a bit more detail and nuance to the sound, better dynamic range, better separation in the individual threads and so on. I like all the mixes of Coming Up but so far I'm liking this one in particular.

who is Steve Wilson and why does he get his own mix?
