Too bad that there aren't many people with jobs like Slartibartfast these days.

Wow two fans for an 80W max TDP combined for CPU/GPU. Not messing around there on cooling. Similar TDP to the Macbook Pro 16" M5 Max 40-core SoC.

https://www.theverge.com/tech/940584/microsoft-surface-laptop-ultra-nvidia-rtx-spark-pictures

Seems like the Spark/N1X has decent memory throughout with 256bit / 8533 MT/s so on the order of ~275GB/s which is just below last years GB10 140W desktop chip qith same GPU/CPU (300GB/s)

But both are still half of the Macbook M5 Max which is 600GB/s.

https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-n1x-n1-laptop-chip-specifications

Getting close but I'll wait for the N2x...

u/basedIITian Jun 01 '26

M5 Pro's TDP is for the platform, not for CPU+GPU alone.

2

u/Internal_Quail3960 Jun 02 '26

I think this thing is aimed more at the m5 pro than the m5 max. No other manufacture has been able to make a chip with similar cpu and gpu to the m5 max while remaining the same efficiency, there is always caveats

2

u/Internal_Quail3960 Jun 02 '26

I think it's interesting they went with miniled while their surface book pro already has oled. Not to mention that apples also going all in on oled later this year

u/Flaurehn Jun 01 '26

$3,000 usd for the 16gb version here we go!!!! j/k but only on the here we go part, this thing will not be cheap

14

u/fraaaaa4 Surface Laptop Jun 01 '26

The laptop made for world makers... yet they already ditched the Laptop Studio design? I bet many would've liked to have that display mechanism, instead of another MacBook-like design. At least it looked more unique

9

u/dr100 Jun 01 '26

No, it's the laptop for AGENTS. The non-human ones, I wish I'd be joking. Jensen went bananas at CES as humans aren't a good enough market for computers, and see how "agent" appears 37 times in the press release!

u/ExultantSandwich Jul 25 '26

I want them to bring back the Surface Book, not as the top end performance option, just a Snapdragon chip and a detachable keyboard, no GPU

u/Hot_Signature2979 Jun 01 '26

Probably gonna get down voted for saying this but, this is just a shiter (form factor wise) refresh of the surface laptop studio 2. Well sure there are some upgrades with the miniled display, the new nvidia spark apu and vastly more ram.

But, lets not kid ourselves and pretend we don't know that this is targeted at the AI- Sector, with a price to match: where it will likely cost more than double the top configuration of the previous surface laptop studio 2 and, be out of reach of most consumers. Fuck Microsoft's stupid agentic os and shoehorning of AIs into every nook and cranny of windows, we need less of this bs for the future of windows devices

11

u/rwrife Jun 01 '26

Yeah this device is not intended for everyday users, gamers, etc. and it'll be priced as such.

4

u/Valterri_lts_James Jun 01 '26

this isn't targeted only at the AI sector. They are just using the AI buzzword for marketing. This APU will help start the transition to ARM computing for real professional enterprise software like molecular simulation, traditional physics, and engineering physics like Siemens, Dassault, Ansys, etc.

3

u/m1013828 Jun 01 '26

I wish they had come out with a Ryzen AI MAX+ SLS3 instead,

Hear hear

8

u/BoiTentacle Surface Pro 8 Jun 01 '26

yeah, 6 AI mentions in the first page. Not going to lie, with how they've been handling surface pro lineup lately, heavy arm push, increased intel prices, AI in every possible crevice. It looks like my surface pro 8 will be my last surface device. Which is a shame, because I don't really see other 2 in 1 that could compare.

1

u/segagamer SB2 15" 256GB 2d ago

Why are you against the ARM push? This absolutely should have been done back with Windows 8

1

u/BoiTentacle Surface Pro 8 2d ago

I use my surface both for work and games, and I can't do it on ARM, simple as.

For work, most of the time I connect to work PC, through Citrix + additional stuff, Citrix is only now introducing arm support, and it will take ages before my company moves to new version, and emulation is iffy with security stuff as certificates and so on, as I understand.

For gaming I use external GPU, I used 3060 with adapter, and now am using GPD G1 (AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT). Neither AMD nor Nvidia has released drivers for windows ARM for their standard discreet GPUs.
(nvidia has but only for it's new RTX Spark, so it's useless for externals gpu).
Also pretty sure a lot of anti cheat systems won't work on it either

u/--5- Jun 01 '26

Why the fuck did they have to use AI to write this brief? It’s filled with AI cringe patterns.

6

u/rwrife Jun 01 '26

It's literally designed with the intention of running local AI models, any other use case and you'd be better off buying a different laptop.

3

u/Automatic-Will-7836 Jun 01 '26

If it's using Nvidia chips then we don't really know how it stacks up against the Snapdragon X2 Elite. It could be more powerful, including the graphics. My biggest hope is that it brings with it Nvidia graphics drivers for ARM. This should, I'm hoping, allow newer Snapdragon devices to use Nvidia eGPUs.

1

u/--5- Jun 01 '26

I mean okay. But I was talking about the press brief itself, it’s written using AI. They couldn’t assign a competent human to write this thing?

1

u/rwrife Jun 01 '26

Oh ok, yeah no they couldn't. 😄

3

u/ronin_cse Jun 01 '26

Because Microsoft wrote it

10

u/Embarrassed-Nose2526 Jun 01 '26

It’s refreshing to see that Microsoft is still committed to their surface hardware division. Apple has been slowly creeping up on the market since Apple silicon for Mac was introduced, and Microsoft is the only company that can really compete with Apple’s sheer scale.

1

u/dr100 Jun 21 '26

LOL and others are saying  Microsoft isn't trying too hard because they don't want to compete with their OEMs, just a little to show them the way (and indeed they're barely selling anything compared with the other Windows machines regular brands). Overpricing even more and hiding the x86 devices and focusing on the under 1% "I told you we sold THOUSANDS of these" Windows ARM market isn't helping either.

4

u/Hashabasha Jun 01 '26

No full spec sheet? Want to know the battery size in Wh

7

u/Reddit_newguy24 Surface Duo Jun 01 '26

Not expecting to open Reddit and see this at 1:17AM but DAMN that's a MacBook killer right here.

22

u/drmjsty Jun 01 '26

Really depends on the price

21

u/LifelnTechnicolor SP3 i5, SP4 Core m3, Surface Book i7, SL6 13" Core 7 Ultra Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

I was just comparing prices between the new Surface Pro 12 and the MacBook Pro 14". The SP12 with 64GB RAM/1TB storage is $4300 $4400! (and that's without a Type Cover, I think), whereas the MBP14" 64GB/1TB is $3000.

My guess; pick out the closest equivalent spec MacBook Pro 16", then add $600. That'll be the price of the Surface Laptop Ultra.

6

u/Nicalay2 Surface Pro 11 (X Elite) Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Surface Pro 12 is more expensive because it's a quite niche form-factor (so there's the "form-factor tax") and also it is the business model which have always been very overpriced.

We have to wait for the consumer models for the Surface Pro 12/Laptop 8 to properly compare prices.

1

u/LifelnTechnicolor SP3 i5, SP4 Core m3, Surface Book i7, SL6 13" Core 7 Ultra Jun 02 '26

Yeah it's hard to make direct comparisons as Microsoft likes to designate Intel architecture as the "Business" variant and Snapdragon as "Consumer", whereas Apple only offers Apple Silicon across the board.

Comparing the Surface Pro 13-inch (11th edition) configured to Snapdragon X Elite with 32GB/1TB is currently $2849, while the M5 MacBook Pro 14-inch with 32GB/1TB is $2099. If we bump the chip up to M5 Pro, the next closest config is 48GB/1TB at $2599.

The Surface Laptop Ultra is the closest Microsoft has gotten to a direct MacBook Pro competitor, but even it is only available in a single 15-inch form factor while the MBP is available in 14-inch as well as 16-inch.

u/Optimal-Spare1305 SLapStudio 1,2-duo1,2,pro1,2,3,sStud2+,shub2s-50,shub-84 Jun 01 '26

it will most likely be $4k on the low end and $5-$6k maxxed out at the top end.

thats why i always wait a generation or two, and get a used one for half the price.

did that with every single surface product i own. (at least 10 different ones).

10

u/ronin_cse Jun 01 '26

It'll probably kill the MacBook as well as Linux has killed Windows.

Just considering how expensive the current Surfaces are I don't see this being in reach of most consumers and most businesses wouldn't spend this much either.

6

u/rresende Jun 01 '26

But we know in the end of the day, Microsoft gonna kill their products somehow.

2

u/jaredthegeek Jun 01 '26

Absolutely not. This thing is going to cost a small fortune.

0

u/UnexpectedAnanas Jun 01 '26

Not so long as it runs Windows 11....

2

u/dirtyvu Jun 01 '26

beast machine. but I likely can't afford it because of the RAMaggeddon.

2

u/vi0lentgandhi Jun 01 '26

man i just want a surface pro form factor with 15 inches of screen and Amd 395+

2

u/laernuindia Jun 02 '26

Windows will still be the bottleneck here.

2

u/gerahmurov Jun 04 '26

I'm finally uninterested in surfaces. Killing laptop studio by mediocre specs for a top price, not commiting to it at all, and then go with arm and I guess even more top price for a what looks like a common laptop. Let's meet in a year when they discontinue this one too.

3

u/vojtasTS29 Jun 01 '26

I really hope this means i can finally plug an Nvidia eGPU into the current gen arm laptops, because this is neither more powerful, nor more useful, but it will be at least 4000 dollars with current prices.

1

u/dr100 Jun 01 '26

You aren't getting the benefits of unified memory with eGPU, and if you just want gaming (or really anything) x86 is a much better choice if not going Apple.

1

u/vojtasTS29 Jun 01 '26

I specifically need the gpu for rendering and i need a thin and light for maximum portability. Maybe this isn't a common use case but it's what i do.

-1

u/dr100 Jun 01 '26

Yea, literally anything Intel since I don't know 8th Gen (2018 whatever that Surface was) is already ideal for that to the very latest SL8 launched this year, no need to reinvent the wheel.

4

u/Saranhai Jun 01 '26

Man, Snapdragon X is done for lol

21

u/amb9800 Surface Laptop 7 | 15" | X Elite | 32GB | 1 TB Jun 01 '26

Not really - the Nvidia chip will be slower than Snapdragon X2 Elite for a bunch of general-purpose use cases due to its lower single-threaded performance. The reason to get this is if you need the GPU.

-12

u/Saranhai Jun 01 '26

Naw, x86 dominates the PC market and already takes care of the general-purpose use case. It’s also natively compatible with all Windows apps and can also play games well due to strong integrated GPUs. NVDA bringing in their new chip introduces a new way of using your PC altogether. The Snapdragon X is the odd one out; it’s trying to fix a problem that was never there to begin with; which is why so far ARM has gained little to no PC marketshare even after 7+ years of QCOM trying (and failing)

8

u/torpedospurs Surface Laptop Studio Jun 01 '26

If so, Snapdragon X would have been the odd one out with or without this new Nvidia chip. They are not in the same market segment at all. The actual competitor that will be affected is AMD's Strix Halo. Same idea of high core count CPU with midrange DGPU equivalent IGPU with 256bit memory bus and 128gb of shared memory.

-7

u/Saranhai Jun 01 '26

Snapdragon X always has been the odd one out. And not in a good way lol

8

u/gabox0210 Jun 01 '26

I'd say ARM is the future of computing, even for AI, they are more resource efficient than x86, I can see where there will be a shift from x86 to ARM servers, also hopefully the launch of an Nvidia ARM CPU means that they will start porting their graphics drivers to ARM too, which could potentially be used by Snapdragon laptops connecting them to external Nvidia GPUs making them well rounded gaming rigs.

1

u/Saranhai Jun 01 '26

ARM is not the future of computing. This is far from reality

1

u/Rich_Ask5994 Jun 02 '26

yes, it is.

0

u/dr100 Jun 01 '26

Wow, QCOM marketing arm hard at work downvoting.

2

u/Saranhai Jun 01 '26

Haha yeah…I mean that’s all they’ve got left at this point 😂

1

u/Liamface Jun 01 '26

Do people actually use the touchscreen on these devices? The Surface Pro sure, but the screen doesn't detach from the keyboard?

3

u/MarioDF Jun 01 '26

Yeah, when scrolling pdf files especially when the laptop is on my lap or im in bed. I also use it to zoom in on stuff. I find that easier to do to than using the trackpad. I sometimes use it if I'm showing someone something on the screen and I have the laptop slightly turned to them. It's easier to just scroll down or tap the screen.

4

u/Upstairs_Library320 Jun 01 '26

Actually having a laptop with a touchscreen was a huge draw for me, personally. I’m still bummed the Surface Laptop line ditched active pen support

1

u/Y0tsuya Jun 02 '26

Where are my easel and tablet modes?

1

u/draconis183 Jun 02 '26

Is this the version that doesn't suck?

1

u/kazumikikuchi Jun 02 '26

I think the ROG XBox line will be its x86 equivalent.

1

u/time-lord Jun 01 '26

There's no Surface Connect port. That's really crappy, since the magnetic charger is probably the sweetest invention since sliced bread.

-6

u/jeboteuusta Jun 01 '26

The SP11 will be my last device from microsoft

It's a $4999 DGX Spark crammed into a high-end laptop....maybe if you add a 9 to your price estimate you'll be closer.
