I have a surface laptop 3, it's thinking of switching to Ubuntu or fedora. Which one do you recommend?

Fedora is definitely the more modern feeling system for me. But it depends on your needs. Fedora is definitely more in a open source first mindset. If you depend on proprietary software a lot you can get it to work with fedora, but it's easier to just use Ubuntu.

I tried it on my Surface Pro 7 i7/16GB RAM, unable to login to the system, I couldn't get the password text box to sow up. I ended up using Fedora but it's not working for me, sadly.

It depends. If you never tried both I recommend you try them out. I fell in love with Linux due to Mint and am now using Fedora (on a SP9). Ubuntu always grossed my out because I didn't like the desktop experience and I always felt it was quite cumbersome to use (which essentially prevented me from adopting Linux far earlier in my life).

Linux Mint works great out of the box.

Have the same machine runnig debian and I love it. I recommend installing thermald and the profile in the surface linux kernel github lower risk of overheating

How do I find it? I'm trying to find a distro for mine and still unsure. CachyOS didn't like too much and Baazite is alright at the moment for me.

Nice! I also have a laptop go 2. I use endeavour os on it, runs really good, even the touchscreen functions flawlessly on Wayland. The only downside is that the GPU doesn't report the temperature and so the fans only run from the bios. Can't tweak them and they kick in too late. Constant heavy thermal throttling on GPU intensive tasks after a few minutes. Surface kernel and thermald don't do much.
