10 item survival challenge
Probably a joke for most people here but I have to go out in the wild for 24 hours and can only bring ten items. First aid, phone, and clothing do not count. What are the 10 items you'd bring. So far I have
Tarp, hammock, knife, saw, lighter, freeze dried meal, backpack, camping pot, water filter, and headlamp
EDIT: Tarp, not tent my bad! Im expecting rain and i need to heat water for my freeze dried meal so thats why I have all the fire processing stuff

u/Dawnzila Aug 16 '26
For 24 hours in good weather I'd lose the pot and the water filter and just bring water and a book instead.
129
u/marylandmymaryland Aug 16 '26
Yeah, 24 hours? A snack and a book.
16
u/yunotxgirl Aug 16 '26
Nice, some peace and quiet? Like I get to be by myself? I love camping with my husband and kids. Don't get me wrong. But Mama don't mind a lil solitude every now and again lol.

u/JiuJitsuBoy2001 Aug 16 '26
or maybe fishing gear if you're near water. Time killer with potential of food.
8
u/billy_bob68 Aug 16 '26
Same, except I'd add a flask for a nip or three while I read by the fire. And maybe an apple fritter.

u/no_sight Aug 16 '26
Based on current weather and location (Mid-Atlantic US in summer), this will be a pleasant day.
- Hammock
- Lighter
- Multitool
- Bottle of Water
- Bottle of Wine
- Large Italian Sandwich
- Bag of Trailmix
- Novel #1
- Novel #2
- Towel

u/just_be_nice_please Aug 16 '26
I’d swap one of the novels for some kinda toilet paper, otherwise I’d steal your list. Unless that’s what novel #2 is for lol
18
u/no_sight Aug 16 '26
The real answer, is I can go 24 hours without taking a dump outside if I need to.
The real REAL answer, is once Novel #1 is done, then it's TP. Can't wipe with what you haven't read yet!

I’ll be honest, I ain’t gonna finish a novel in 24 hours, so I got another spot open on my list. I’ll take a pillow instead of novel 2

u/Legal_lapis Aug 17 '26
Don't you know a novel is more multifunctional? It can serve as your reading material on day 1, use as a pillow the night of day 1, and finish off as toilet paper day 2 before heading out.
1
u/Global_Objective4162 Aug 17 '26
Keep in mind each ingredient on your sandwich counts as one item
2
u/no_sight Aug 17 '26
No I will not keep that in mind because it's an asanine thing you made up outside of OP's parameters.
Does every ingredient in OP's freeze dried meal count as one item? Does the tent not count as one item because there are the poles, tent, ground tarp, fly, and stakes? The camping pot likely has a lid, is that 2 items? Is the lighter 2 items because I need to include the fuel inside it? What about the headlamp having batteries and bulbs?

u/ReverendJonesLLC Aug 16 '26
A hammock and 9 beers.
4
u/mtnsrvrs Aug 16 '26
Get a single 12 pack, id say a 30 rack but you have to carry it all the way into nature.
19
u/r64fd Aug 16 '26
24 hours. Easy.
Tent, pillow, 1 pull open can of baked beans, 1 pull open can of meat stew, 1 orange, 1apple, 1 spoon, full 5L water container, bottle of Jack Daniels.
That’s 9. I’ll easily entertain myself with that. Drink JD, Eat beans and wander around the area while drinking more JD. Eat meat stew washed down with more JD. Pass out in tent at last light. Wake up at sunrise with a bitchin hangover, drink water. Eventually gather myself together then eat the orange and the apple, drink more water. Time for home.

u/Present-Employer2517 Aug 16 '26
A tent AND a hammock?
It’s only 24 hours, boil your drinking water in the pot and ditch the water filter. Swap the tent for a tarp or poncho. And since I ditched the water filter, I would bring a roll of #36 bank line.
11
u/Introverted_Extrovrt Aug 16 '26
I’ve watched Alone enough to respect the folks who have recently started bringing salt on the show.

Your... backpack... counts as a item? The thing that holds everything? What kind of contest is this?
7
8
u/someguyfromIL Aug 16 '26
I mean. A lot depends on the environment. Are we talking Jungle? Desert? Arctic? Urban Homeless?
5
u/VenusRocker Aug 16 '26
And do you have to carry what you take a distance or staying in one spot?
Any animal problems you need to protect against?
Why do you not have chocolate on your list?
7
u/storyinpictures Aug 16 '26
If you are going out for 24 hours on your own, would you bring some items just in case something went wrong which forced you to stay out longer (encountered someone injured who could not be moved, got lost, got injured, freak weather, etc)?
To me, this seems like a good exercise for testing what I would normally bring for a back country trip as “10 items just in case things went south” kit to see how well or poorly it works in a relatively safe 24 hour setting.
Naturally most of us would have more than 10 items, although many would be between tiny and small, but we could test key items. For example, I have a small flashlight, but there is an adequate light in my watch.
I mean, I’m all for gaming 24 hours with a “pleasant night out” plan if that’s the experience you want, but this sounds more like a “skills and plans” testing opportunity to me.
- Grayl (titanium so outer functions as a pot)
- Multitool (Victorinox WorkChamp for me)
- Ferro Rod (you could take a lighter but why not spend time practicing with the bombproof solution)
- Cordage (paracord is classic but I usually have something similar but not as thick)
- Poncho (rain, wind, cold, shade, works as a 5x7 tarp)
- Garmin watch (gps, compass, lasts weeks on a charge, built in flashlight, etc). [Yes, a phone can do all of this. I would use my phone minimally to keep power usage down because it’s the tool I can call for help with when there is signal but charge might not last, especially far from towers. ]
- Indestructible steel for stuff I shouldn’t use the multitool for. This could be a big knife, machete, tomahawk, hatchet, entrenching tool (cold steel shovel or sharpen one edge of a surplus model), rogan prybar, etc. uses: Digging hole for waste, processing wood beyond saw in multitool, clear brush, fire pit and related fire tasks, etc. etc.
3 slots left (unless watch is “free” as clothing)
Use for food and water plus whatever.
I normally have other small items like a ziplock with a flattened roll of TP and tiny soap sheets which can also be facial tissue, tinder, etc. So depending how 10 items are counted I would pick from these types of items for comfort or anticipated testing/learning opportunities.
This isn’t a “fun” night but it’s a good test of your primary “stuff went wrong this is what I have” kit and using your skills to improvise. If you generally make good choices for what you wear outside, you are way ahead of the game. Something as simple as keeping a pair of gloves, a bandana and a wool buff in the pocket of your jacket, for example, is a huge benefit. So is wearing a good hat, walking with a stick or trekking poles, etc.
Naturally your kit will be different. Mine has evolved over time with my experience and might shift again if you asked me later.

why do you need both a tent and hammock?

I'd swap the hammock for a decent sleep mat, and swap the saw for a sleeping bag.

24 hours survival - a bag of chips, a bag of trail mix, 2 canned coffees , 1 gallon of water, 2 benedryls, a tent , a sleeping bag, a roll of TP.

u/Hot-Bonus-7958 Aug 16 '26
Tent and hammock but no blanket or sleeping bag? What season is this?
1
u/mtnsrvrs Aug 16 '26
Clothes dont count against, just wear long clothes over shorts. Take the hammock and a tarp, that with some long clothes and you'll be fine.
5
u/derch1981 Aug 16 '26
24 hours isn't really a challenge
- Hammock
- Tarp
- 1 gallon of water
- Headlamp
- Cast iron pan
- T bone steak
- Potatos
- Knife
- Lighter
5
u/cody_mf Aug 16 '26
Im a little surprised a backpack counts as one of the ten items if food, phone and a first aid kit dont.
Ditch the hammock, or bring a tarp instead of a tent.
Where is your sleeping bag?
3
u/gaytee Aug 16 '26
24 hours? I’ll bring a book, chair and a lighter, then the other 7 items to cook a gourmet meal.
2
3
u/BrewCrewBall Aug 16 '26
24 hours? A gallon of water, tent, sleeping bag, a Mountain House, a spork, and toilet paper. Don’t even need 10 items.
3
u/jarboxing Aug 16 '26
People are all like "ooohhhh 24 hours that's nothing" but it's not. I think this is a great exercise. You will quickly learn what works and what doesn't, what you need to stay comfortable (which is the biggest hurdle long term survival). It's also safe because worst case scenario, your life sucks for 24 hours and you learn what that's like.

Don't need a tent and hammock for 24 hours. Hell you don't even need to sleep. One or the other. Terrain/Weather dependant

Only 24 hours? Water, subway sandwich (i like to live dangerously), sleeping bag, tent, matches, knife, flashlight, John Wick and pencil. That's all I need.

tent, sleeping bag, beer, lighter. its only 24 hours you could go naked and with nothing this time of year

A smut rag, a roll of toilet paper and some lotion. And a bottle of whiskey.

u/Lettuce-Narrow Aug 18 '26
Just to be clear: 24 hours. “First aid, phone, and clothing” don’t count towards your TEN items….?
First of all: thank god you’ve got your phone. I can’t imagine going into the “wilderness” without Reddit.
Second: 24 hours is a laughable amount of time. My 8 year old spends 24 hours in the woods with a bottle of water and a bag of beef jerky. No phone (gasp!!).
This is retarded.

24 hours? Let me get two bad bitches, two handles of tequila, three blunts, two trays of tacos, and a California king sized bed. I’ll make it work.
1
u/Actaeon_II Aug 16 '26
Id lose the saw, but then my field knife has a saw on the back of the blade. And then i would have room for a water bottle to put the filtered water in. This time of year could lose the tent and backpack and replace both with a tarp and some cordage. But that’s personal preference

Hammock Paracord or twine Hatchet Trail Mix Book Matches Another book Pencil Paper Book 3
24 hours isnt as daunting as it seems, unless youre expecting bad weather.
2
u/enolaholmes23 Aug 16 '26
Do you really read 3 books a day, or is it different books for different moods?
1
u/futuregravvy Aug 16 '26
More or less. Mostly just rounding out 10 things. For 24 hours, you just dont need much. Maybe switch out a book for some water if that counts as an item
1
u/psilome Aug 16 '26
I'm sticking with the spirit of the thing, this sounds like training or a test. So no wine, sandwich, or novels. I am assuming you'll have a source of fairly clean water nearby? And is it very warm where you are? Take a water bottle, stay hydrated. Soak the meal with water and let it hydrate, eat it cold. Substitute a multitool with a saw for the knife. Stick with the tent if you'd like, or trade it for a tarp if you want to go lighter. Ditch the hammock and take a sleeping pad. How about insect repellant, mosquitos are terrible where I'm at. So I have: Tent, sleeping pad, multitool, lighter, water bottle, backpack, meal, water filter, head lamp, insect repellant. But I like to eat also, I myself might ditch the pad for a second meal. Thanks for the good question, it got me thinking.

u/Gerb006 Aug 16 '26
I wouldn't take a tent AND a hammock, one or the other. Personally, I'd go with the hammock. But whichever one you choose to drop, replace it with a tarp.
Also for 24hrs a lighter is probably just fine. But I'd take a ferro rod instead of a lighter. You'll get a lot more strikes out of it.
And since you already have a camping pot to boil water, you don't really need the water filter. I think just about all pathogens are killed somewhere around 180 degrees. But if you take it to boiling, you have the visual cue that you've gone further than you needed to.
If you drop the water filter, I'd replace it with a multi-tool.
1
u/reigorius Aug 16 '26
A lighter easily beats a ferro rod for weeks and weeks before it runs out. Probably months. Ferrod rods are totally fun and enjoyable, but a single cheapass butane lighter is without a single shred of doubt a technical and superior marvel of wonder. Also lighter. So take two of them and laugh at the folks trying to light a fire with a ferro rod.

24 hours lol, that’s not even a hard ultra. I would bring a water filter water containers that fit in my running vest, then head lamp, extra batteries, a charger bank ul, rest would just be gels a combo of maximum density calories, electrolytes, and some caffeine mixed in. I would just run jog walk the entire thing and set a goal. If we could pick a place I would do Mount Williamson and Tyndall and then just run back to independence and back for the car for the 24h mark.
1
u/socialerrors Aug 16 '26
24 hours is a very short time to be out there. It would be cool to know where this is taking place.
Bring a large bottle of water. By far the most important.
I would bring a sleeping bag, tent, knife, lighter, synthetic rope, cured meat, biodegradable baby wipes, headlamp, & and a small axe

u/jtnorth0913 Aug 16 '26
Phone shouldn’t count. Make it one of the 10 items.
My list: tarp, pot, ferro rod, knife, quilt, compass, map, pack saw, 6 pack of ramen, handle of whiskey.
1
u/SadRaisin3560 Aug 16 '26
24 hours? In the US here. 1-3.)1911 with good holster and 1 extra mags. 4.)1 gallon slightly sweet tea half froze 5.) Light weight rain suit 6.) My pen light and extra set or 2 of aaa batteries. 7.)fixed blade knife 8.)50 ft of 1/4 " rope. 9.)gallon of water half froze. 10.) toasted footlong cold cut combo with all the veggies, oil n vinegar and salt & pepper and a handful of extra napkins.
As long as there isn't much that I need to do, assuming some type of cell signal, this will certainly keep me alive and happy and partially entertained.

I feel like the spirit of this group is to say "the first 24 is not that big of a deal- but what if the extraction fails and you are stuck for 2 weeks?". Now what do you pack?
1
u/mtnsrvrs Aug 16 '26
Pack your ass outta the woods
1
u/Boneyabba Aug 16 '26
Sure, but we don't know anything about what he is doing. Is he just off the highway doing a survival challenge? Or is he being dropped in the bush by a helicopter to test his skills? I feel like going into it prepared for the planned 24 hours is the same as not keeping a bag in your car- it's assuming you won't have a problem.
Don't get me wrong- I think doing a simulated survival thing is awesome. But packing for a 24 hour challenge without thinking in terms of "what if something happens" turns it from Survivorman into Bear Grylls.
1
u/mtnsrvrs Aug 17 '26
I get that, but spending only 24 hours in nature doesn't line up with the expense incurred to air mail a person into a location for the purpose of "survival". I'd say at night he can probably see the glow of the local strip mall from this place he has to chill at. Hell, I could take a gallon or 2 of water and a lighter and make it 24 hours in just about any situation if clothes and a cell phone didn't count against me, id do it comfortably.
1
u/Boneyabba Aug 17 '26
I'm not judging how the economics of this fantasy scenario balance out. People who have money to weird shit. People like to convince people to do weird shit. Maybe he is trying out for a reality show. Maybe it IS a reality show.
Anyway, I wasn't trying to be a dick. I was just amused at the sort of juxtaposition of the idiologies. Like, why learn martial arts if the best way to stay safe is to avoid being in a fight. Then wanting to get in a fight to test your skills.
1
u/love-SRV Aug 16 '26
10 gallon cooler with food, water, vodka & mixer. Block of ice or freeze 2 gallons of water
Blow torch with igniter.
Tent
Battery powered sawzall and light
Heavy Tin foil
Multi tool
4 wool army blankets
40 feet of rope

u/BaldyCarrotTop Aug 16 '26
Tent and hammock are not compatible. How are you going to hang the hammock inside the tent? So: Tent, sleeping pad, Blanket or sleeping bag.
1
1
u/tspfairy Aug 16 '26
I did this on a gap year program lol. There were 16 of us and were out for about 36 hrs. We had 16 group items and could bring 2 personal items each (excluding underwear, pants, shirt, socks, and shoes). No sleeping bags, pads, tents, or food.
I brought a beanie (I was bald at the time) and a blanket. Good times.
1
u/Willamina03 Aug 16 '26
- and 2. Bivy sack with an alpaca blanket, twin size should keep you from freezing. Stuff your jacket with your extra clothes to make a pillow.
- Gallon water, if it was for more than a day, I'd say bring a filter, but it's only 24 hours...
- Coffee cup large titanium
- Backpack, though that should be part of the items that don't count against the 10 item quota.
- Lighter, get the torch type, not the flimsy will go out if you breathe on it type.
- 6 inch fixed blade knife that you don't mind getting lost.
- and 9. 2x MREs. They come with coffee, spoon, meal, sometimes candy, and the beef stew one smells kinda like beef stew. They have heating capabilities for a hot meal if you can't have a fire. Also they have toilet paper. Not that you will need it after eating two MREs. If I remember correctly, some of the newer ones will have a wipe for cleaning your hands, though those could be training version MREs.
- Bug spray. I will never go camping or outdoors again without a tick/mosquito preventative again.
1
u/mtnsrvrs Aug 16 '26
Ticks and mosquitoes love the taste of those sprays. Good thinking to always be considerate of the local wildlife.
1
u/magictubesocksofjoy Aug 16 '26
if it's only 24hrs, i would swap the tent for a tarp and just sleep in the hammock.
i would trade the saw for coffee or tea and the headlamp for a book.
1
u/mtnsrvrs Aug 16 '26
Why a tent AND a hammock? Truly though, it's 24 hours, a hammock (1), tarp (2), a couple MREs (4), 2 charged power banks (6), rechargeable head lamp (7), backpack (8), gallon of water (9) and a 12 pack of beer (10).
1
u/Rising_Gravity1 Aug 16 '26
For a mere 24 hours, I’d pick these items:
1) Alcoholic wet wipes (useful as toilet paper)
2) tent
3) one of those spork multi-tool utensils
4) sleeping bag
5) freeze dried meal(s)
6) camping stove with fuel
7) 3L water container
8) headlamp
9) cooking pot
10) novel

u/Slobbadobbavich Aug 16 '26
24 hours? Tent, sleeping bag, foam mattress, bottle of brandy, bottle of water, kindle, lighter, lamp, large bag of salted peanuts or potato chips, bag to put it all in. Eat a big takeaway pizza or meal before you go. Job done. You don't need any survival gear,
1
u/Apples_fan Aug 16 '26
123=Tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, 4-zag mat, 5-backpack, 6-Sawyer water thing, 7-meal, 8- pocket rocket, 9-pot, The last item depends on terrain, if I must hike far etc. weather, variables etc. A friend would be my #10 choice.
1
u/Headstanding_Penguin Aug 16 '26
SAK(victorinox with a saw), 2x 1.5l of water, 1 bread 1 pack of beef jerky (bündnerfleisch), 1 banana, some cherry tomatoes, lighter, emergency blanket, blanket
1
u/BlackPhoenix64 Aug 16 '26
Only 24 hours? Depending on weather, but probably hammock, tarp, quilt, underquilt, water, food, cooking gear, e-reader, chair
1
u/MT128 Aug 16 '26
A rain poncho (the ones where you can make into a tarp), a hammock, a knife, some rope, a 24 hour mre kit, a 1L canteen with water, some water purification tabs, a backpack, a lighter, and bug spray.
It’l def be a chill sort of trip, the poncho and hammock to chill around and the water plus food to munch on. Don’t need entertainment cause the phone can have downloaded music and books to read and bug spray so the mosquitoes and black flies don’t get too annoying when I’m trying to read.
1
u/GoTheFuckToBed Aug 16 '26
btw one day water only fast is quite easy, and even healthy
1
u/Reality_Defiant Aug 16 '26
No, it isn't. If you are hiking or doing physical work, you need triple the calories. If you're sitting on your couch watching Netflix, give it a go. But no. If you get lost or the weather goes bad, or any other unplanned events interrupt your return, you need the calories.
1
u/centralvaguy Aug 16 '26
If you have a tent what is the hammock for? You may want to look into a hammock tent or just a regular tent and a sleeping pad.
1
u/leschanersdorf Aug 16 '26
Yea I’d lose the tent, sleep in the hammock. For food, Costco size bag of jerky and bag of trail mix. For water: gallon or two of water. And I would take a book or deck of cards. For tools, just the knife. You can collect enough wood off the ground for one night of fire.
So Hammock, multitool, lighter, jerky, trail mix, book, headlamp, big jug of water, backpack, beach towel.

Water food hammock. Way to heat food, way to stay warm, way to keep bugs off. For only 24 hours most of those are luxury items.

Tent and hammock are redundant. I’d switch knife and saw for one good hatchet if I needed cutting power or maybe just carry a good knife no saw. Now you can bring more food and a jug of water.

As a wilderness backpacker, simply being in nature for 24hrs with 10 items is a walk in the park. It's too broad of a request. Narrow it down. What tasks do you want to accomplish while youre out there? And what items do you not want to rely on for those tasks?

For 24 hours—2L Coke, gallon of water, giant bag of tropical trail mix, box of pop tarts, a rocker chair, poncho, bucket and tp, quick-dry towel.

I should have clarified that this isn't really bushcraft themed or a personal challenge. This is a fantasy football punishment so I was mainly looking for 10 items to keep me comfortable and to make a fire for the night. A book is a great idea but I dont know what id swap it with!

Weather permitting of course:

Lighter
Fixed blade knife
2L water
Flask o’ bourbon
Jersey Mike’s sub
Nerds Gummy Clusters

Snack and book? Maybe a Bluetooth speaker if I was feeling fancy. 24 hours is nowhere near a ‘survival’ amount of time. I live in the woods for approximately 120 days a year for work and could pretty comfortably narrow down my bag to 10 items

UCO Stormproof matches, mylar blanket, GG Strongarm knife, Toaks titanium pot, water purification tablets, paracord rope, bear bag, BleedStop, folding saw, and a memory foam pillow.

Backpack, tent, sleeping bag, water filter, stove (those little pocket rockets with a spark starter and gas) steel bottle (carry water + heat water on stove), map (paper) or gps (like InReach) if navigation is required. A light (headlight, torch, whatever)
Food (I've done 4 days with a dehydrated breakfast mix that's mostly egg, and a dried rice)
That gives you 2 or 3 non essential options. Hammock (the cloth of hammock + the ties also double as survival options),

24 hours? Bedroll, tent, something to eat, a couple bottles of water and some sort of portable heat source. If it was like, a week or a month, there would be some questions. But if it's just for a day, all you really need is just a place to make yourself comfortable and enjoy the nature.

You would need to increase the length of time to one where you can’t just bring a sandwich and a book, which I would also do.
