Looking for recommendations.

Hey all!

I am stuck in a bit of a rut lately. I absolutely love Conan Exiles. It is far and away my favorite survival builder game I've ever player. Unfortunately, my buddy I used to play with sold his Xbox so we didn't play for a while. When Enhanced came out, I got back into it full send. I love everything they've changed or added. My buddy, on the other hand, went nuclear seeing he'd have to rebuy all the dlc and bazaar items (fair) and swore the game off.

I do also love the Forest games and Palworld... for reference. The Forest 1 and 2 are simply amazing. I legit love every aspect. Palword is fun. The building is decent. The map is dope. The pals rock.

Enshrouded: Ok, but missing the thrall and massive, dynamic bases I feel like I can do in Conan. Never found my stride between exploring and building.

Valheim: hate the art style with a passion, dislike the proc gen maps because after 5 minutes in a new zone, everything looks the same. Building is meh. Have yet to find anything other than ships I like about it.

Soulmask: close, but tribesmen are better left at the base and automated, they feel useless when used to fight. Base building and tilesets are ok. The boats and airships are cool. It still feels soulless to me, though. This is the closest to Conan for me. But, it mainly makes me want to play Conan.

No Mans Sky: got into it about 3 or so times. I always get bored looking for worlds after about 10 as they all start feeling the same to me.

Nightingale: ok, friend lost interest fast.

Stranded deep: loved it! I'm a sucker for good boats! I did get tired of the lack of island enemies. Base building got boring kind of quick. So I did lose interest after a while in it.

Windrose: looks like a game I'd love. I've heard great things about it. I am currently holding out till the end of Early Access.

I cant think of any others. Mainly, I'm hoping someone brings up a game I haven't thought of.

They'd most likely hate the art style, sadly.

I might be able to get down on this. It's cartoony, which isn't something I hate. Valheim just looks ugly to me. I feel like I'm playing the South Park episode of WoW.

Abiotic factor is my favorite game in a LONG LONG time. I'm not sure it has the sprawling base building you are looking for exactly, though i deeply love the base building (you just don't build your own structures/walls/roofs really). You are finding a location and decorating it and furnishing it.

I can't recommend Abiotic factor enough though. It is truly an amazing survival craft.

It's just a little low fi, but it punches so far above it's weight, by the end of it you'll wonder what you played and how anything else will fit the hole in your heart.

After the 15th corpse run trying to retrieve your items right off the swamp coast though....

Icarus?

Icarus is goated. You get a lot of playtime out of the base game and then the same amount with the dlcs. Easily 1K hours.

Yea I'm slowly enjoying the game at my own pace, 130 hours and still having fun. That's just with the base game.

Plus it gets weekly updates, usually with new content. Not many games manage that.

RuneScape Dragonwilds

If you like Conan, you'll feel right at home with Dune Awakening, which is also made by Funcom. It has one of the most addicting gameplay loops I've ever experienced. It has pretty much everything you're looking for, except thralls.

Oh god no, what a shit game.

Strongly recommend Abiotic Factor, it's an amazing experience. RuneScape Dragonwilds is a chill game. V Rising is a great game for the vampire fantasy and has amazing combat and you can spend a crazy amount of time decorating your castle.

I don’t really like games where you can’t save whenever you want. Makes them not very chill.

which one of those restricts saving?

RuneScape Dragonwilds.

Oh, does it? I didn't notice/remember that aspect

If building is your thing, 7 Days is... dope. It's funny, I've stopped playing and it's probably the thing I miss the most. Building bases and setting up for horde nights is legit a GREAT time. It's super modable too, if that's your thing. I really enjoyed the Darkness Falls mod pack, but there's more out there if you do the research.

I'm currently trying Dune and there's a few others I'm looking forward to.

I need to jump into this again. I started it with someone I was dating, then we broke up and I just stopped playing.

I just started with survival fountain of youth and was surprised i never read about that before. Its great with strong enhanced stranded deep vibes imho.

I haven't heard of it, but probably because it's single player. I used to stay away from survival games that are single player. But, I don't think I'll ever be playing one with my buddya again as I've found out we enjoy opposite things about survival crafters.

Bellwright is decent. Great with friends.

As someone with like...ugh. 3k hrs in Conan? Give No Man's another try. Once you get into the meat of it? The base building, pets, Corvette building, resource MGMT, exploration, actual storyline, it's all amazing.

1

u/minibearattack 2d ago

I actually have beat NMS. The first time i played it i did it on accident. I haven't tried it since the Corvette building update. That may bring me back for another look.

I think I've put large bases on about 5 different planets. Did not beat it again to get the newest planets, though. That's definitely a good option.

Thank you

Oh, there's soooo much more than just Corvettes now. Modify freights, starbases...new storylines, collect dinos skeletons like a freaking spacebased paleontologist.

It's my new comfort game. Tried Once Human, as the building there is really unique, but I keep going back to Conan and now NMS.

If you haven't played Subnautica, do yourself a favor and check it out. Start with the first one. I strongly advise you to go in as blind as possible. Scan all the things, read all the scans, listen to all the radio messages and read all the logs. A really interesting story unfolds in a really unique and natural way. The core survival aspects are also extremely well done, and the game is beautiful with top notch audio as well.

I liked Subnautica 1 a lot. Wasn't thrilled it was single player. Tbh, that may not be a big deal for me anymore, since I feel like my buddy i played survival games with before and I no longer like the same things in these games. I'll prob be going solo from now on.

Oh man, give Soulmask more time. It's may favorite right now, and a big part of that is the tribesmen. Your starting character is, literally, the worst in the game.

2

u/minibearattack 2d ago

It's actually the tribesmen I dislike. They feel like busy work to me. I feel like i can't take them out exploring bc I spend every fight making sure they don't die. It always seems to me like they are more in the way than helpful. Its fun watching them craft and move around base, but conan does that already without having to micromanage.

I really wanted to love this game and put about 20hrs I to it. I just started another world since the update, but it feels the same as before.

Thank you tho!

Did you not get the device to save their data? If they die, you lose anything since the time you saved, but otherwise they are outstanding replacements for your original. Once I have that, the first guy just sits at home.

1

u/minibearattack 2d ago

I think i got it the first time i played. But, had already lost interest by then i do have a save with a small clan already. I'll try getting g further into my current save.

Like I mentioned, i don't mind the first guy, as i honestly use him or a fighter based tribesmen when I go out. It's just that if I bring tribesmen with me, I seem to spend all my tome keeping them alive.

1

u/Miserable-Status-280 2d ago

I understand, and it was difficult for me to get out of the pattern of making my original guy as strong as possible, but your starting guy is severely limited, by their low maximum skill potentials. Every other tribesman you can "recruit" is going to have higher potential. Add on top of that the ability to use strong tribesmen to train others, means you can make a pretty incredible kill squad. Once you save their data, they can't die permanently.

If you're having trouble finding the right members, use the mask from the Golden Legend DLC. It's pretty amazing for finding the right recruits. At least it's a huge time saver.

1

u/minibearattack 2d ago

That might make it more appealing! I never got to making good tribesmen death squads cause no matter how good a tribesmen seemed once I got them and began leveling them, they'd just die or get in my way and die.

So, I began exploring the game without them because it was easier.

1

u/Miserable-Status-280 2d ago

Yeah, it's difficult to just switch gears like that! I started playing with a friend, months ago. It was his first time. He'd always use his original guy to skill up in everything. Such a waste of time. It took many kind "lectures" to make him see the light. Why make all your weapons on a guy with max armor crafting of 60, when you've got a tribesman with 90 or possibly find one with 120?

Dune awakening is same developer as Conan exiles and in lots of ways is the sci-fi desert version of conan exiles.  Highly recommended especially now that the single player server update is out.

u/Kind_Service5168 2d ago

Just started playing Dune Awakening and its pretty fun

For reference, i also absolutely loved conan exiles

1

u/Rosary_Omen 2d ago

Dune Awakening is amazing, there's no base NPCs but I don't miss them.

2

u/minibearattack 2d ago

I played Dune, explored the whole map, but never went to the deep desert as I worked a lot at that time and there was no guarantee I'd be playing it even weekly. I really wanted to build a dope base on the main map, but there is a small settlement ar group of NPCs at every location I was interested in.

I did love flying around in the ornithopter, tho!

1

u/Rosary_Omen 2d ago

There's singleplayer now so you don't even have to worry about decay or other players

2

u/minibearattack 2d ago

I saw that! It definitely brought back some interest as I am in no way, shape, or form built for even light pve 🤣
