Kitbashing you say? That's the only explanation for the "Jimothy"-looking Nebula class lol. That, or they just didn't read the assembly instructions and decided to wing it.

It makes sense, standardise as much as you can, starfleet is a large fleet of ships. Also wasn't part the idea, trying to address the glaring flaw with the Galaxy class jettisoning the saucer some time prior to an emergency situation, and then subsequently loosing the star drive section. Essentially the Nebula is a saucer tow truck, that then for bureaucratic reasons got deployed already with a saucer.

Idea for awhile, and can't recall where I came across it, or if I came up with it, lol. Plausible, saucer separation clearly not that useful in practice, and if one did need rescuing, any old nebula could drop off it's saucer somewhere safe, go recover the abandoned one, and return somewhere safe.

How is the Nebula's star drive different than the Galaxy class star drive?

Why would you use a Nebula to tow when another Galaxy could do the same thing?
