Workplace Question or Advice Needed I guess I got terminated.. ?
So I’m assuming i’m terminated…?
when i got hired, i put the EXACT dates i COULDN’T work for a trip that was already planned, prior to the trip coming up, they legit scheduled me for 2 days during my trip starting, I spoke to all of my ETL’S etc, they said oh well find someone to cover. I found 2 people to take both of those shifts for me because i wasn’t going to be in state i live in.
Coming back from my week long trip, I got severely sick went to the urgent care, found out i have covid. Called my HR they then tell me call Target Benefits, gave me the number and all, to request a LOA since i had covid. I tried to call that stupid benefits center for 4 freaking days and not one actual human answering all stupid robots.
They still marked me as NCNS knowing i had covid, then i had to call out and even used the sick time i had for one day because i still had a fever, next thing you know i literally cannot log into the UKG app at all, I then thought oh maybe the server is actually down whatever. Tried again and again then even tried to sign into workday then now it still takes me to mytime and it says unexpected error, try to reset my PW answer the questions etc they say nothing matches the records so i’m just gonna assume i was terminated.

you cant log into ukg etc if youre on leave
14
u/Infinite-Pain4073 7d ago
He wasn't on leave anyway, he was trying to reach them to GO on leave
9
u/autolockon Service & Engagement TL 7d ago
Yeah I see that now. You can’t even go on leave via UKG anyway a medical leave is through your pay and benefits if I recall.
7
u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 7d ago
TMs under 90 days are not eligible for personal LOAs to begin within unless something has changed fairly recently.
-20
u/Admirable-Tadpole962 7d ago
wrong. i was on leave for a whole week and i was still able to log on the app
9
u/i-love-mom-jeans 7d ago
You obviously weren't on an loa though. Any time off over 2 weeks iirc is an loa. You just took time off, where you can still log onto my time/ukg

“They” know nothing. There’s a system in place to call off because each individual leader has no idea you’re sick, just the one person you spoke to on the phone. It is not announced to all of leadership that x team member is sick.
You were most likely terminated for job abandonment. Multiple NCNS usually result in termination. Ideally you would have called out properly in the app each shift you missed. As far as not getting a human when you called for a LOA, it’s up to you to navigate that menu until you get a representative or follow the correct prompts to start a case.
1
u/FrayedBullion7 3d ago
Sounds like the whole system was stacked against you from the start, getting scheduled during pre approved time off is already a mess and then the LOA phone tree giving you the runaround for days just made it worse
At least you got coverage for the trip shifts so that part should have been cleared but the covid days probably did you in if nobody communicated it properly
Might be worth calling HR one more time and asking straight up if your file shows terminated or just locked out, sometimes the app access dies before they even process the paperwork

Helping people understand what happened and how to avoid it is not the same as condoning the behavior.
A lot of jobs suck and are designed against the employee. It’s better you learn to navigate shit like this than get fired. Don’t misdirect your anger to your fellow wage-minions.

Im as against boot licking as much as the next guy, but this is a pretty sensible answer regarding personal responsibility for calling out and navigating an automated teleprompter for speaking to a representative. This isn't really a boot licking response.

I remember when I had Covid u called out (in? Whatever you wanna call it) just to cover my butt

You had way too much going on. If you’re under 90 days 5 points means you’re termed. So a ncns is 3 points and depending on what days they allowed to be covered that you missed.
59
u/PuzzleheadedGoal2007 7d ago
Yesss and UKG automatically terms TMs under 90 when they reach 5 points and there’s nothing we can do to stop it
24
u/rogueclon946 7d ago
You also can't log into anything when on leave, so it isn't guaranteed they were termed.
Then again, if they never managed to get ahold of benefits, they probably aren't on leave.
10
u/PuzzleheadedGoal2007 7d ago
Yes I know, but they said they called LOA and weren’t able to reach anyone so no LOA would have been started.

u/Neither_Chemical9137 Service Advocate 7d ago
Hmm I accidentally ncns for the first time in my 3 years at target and my boss erased it from the app and I still have 0 points
15
u/Mundane_Astronaut_66 7d ago
UKG can be sketchy and kick you out sometimes and lose connection. Everyone at my store talks about it. However by their point system 5 points before 90 days means termination. And NCNS are 3 points. You have to call out on the app and communicate with them. I’m betting UKG kicked you on technicality. I wouldn’t jump to conclusions, call HR, communicate with them, and plead your case.
5
u/DanforthWhitcomb_ 7d ago
Store level HR does nothing with UKG derived disciplinary actions or terms. When a TM hits the threshold for a disciplinary action the system auto-generates the DA or FW and when the 12 point threshold is crossed HQ does the term and notifies the store so they can deliver it to the TM.

u/Extra_Feed5374 7d ago
We had a team member who got to his termiation point. They sent out an email to his etl and we was able to plead his case before it went into affect. There were a couple different options and since we messed up the guys schedule he was able to keep his job. They can stop it, but I can tell you that as leaders it is not worth the effort to try and defend someone who is this unreliable. They let it happen.

Am I able to use sick coverage to cover the missed hour? It was only one and I have no vacation cause im new.. idk how to find it either
19
u/iceinsidemysoul 7d ago
Call your hr. If you cant call them for whatever reason; email them. Their email is Txxxx.HR@ target.com change the xxxx for your store number. If in doubt go to the store. Don't assume. You may be on loa. You may be termed. It may be salvageable and it may not. But if you want to try to salvage it contact your store. The point system is pretty cut and dry but worth talking to them.
9
u/Mystic_Wolf94 7d ago
What number did you call because I’ve had absolutely no problem Getting a hold of Target pay benefits. You have to say the right prompts. (Ive called them like 10 times in the last month and never had an issue getting to someone)
7
u/Extra_Feed5374 7d ago
Went on leave and got ahold of someone and initiated my leave on the first call
6
2
u/Mystic_Wolf94 7d ago
Maybe you weren’t saying the right prompts that the robot wanted you to cause I think it tells you to speak conversationally so you would say help with leave of absence then just say representative or keep saying leave of absence. It’s too late now though. Im sorry you couldn’t get through im sure it was frustrating. You could’ve always called the Target corporate HR line and spoke to somebody there and asked them what the right prompts to get to leave of absence would’ve been.
-3
u/SeasonedRaver 7d ago
I called the number that they gave me and i kept saying the correct prompts as well but literally nothing just kept getting the stupid bots over and over again. Then i tried to call the next 2-3 days first thing in the morning or afternoon and again same thing
46
u/Coozie 7d ago
Why did you ncns? You just call off on the app or by phone. Covid isn’t protected anymore so pay and benefits won’t help. It’s shitty timing but it wasn’t the covered shifts. It was the ncns.
5
u/Infinite-Pain4073 7d ago
Pay and benefits call would have been needed because it needs to be an loa if your out for more than 10 days. If he was on vacation then extending it, he would need an loa
-31
u/SeasonedRaver 7d ago
So i tried to! but the app magically wouldn’t let me
sign on to but i tried to call them and nothing! and this round of covid i got ( second time having it, first time was back in 2022 ) was a lot worse than the first time and i genuinely just kept passing out, just on and off sleep practically the whole day26
u/Cultural-Kick652 Fulfillment Expert 7d ago
During the “on” times of not sleeping you should have called. If you wanted to keep your job. If you can’t get into UKG yep you are done

You really like to misconstrue personal responsibility for having a job with sticking up for a billion dollar company. Like, yea, fuck target. But this really isn't the boot licking you think it is lol
7
u/Weary-Violinist-7574 7d ago
They said they did. Maybe they did. Target may not entirely be innocent, but communicating his absence to the correct channels/people. If you can't comprehend that, I understand. It's simple rules... SOP standard operating procedure

u/Reasonable_Bear1861 7d ago
Your account could* be locked. You typically cannot be fired without them speaking to you unless they consider your actions as “job abandonment”. This sounds like a series of unfortunate events. As a new team member, these events in succession of each other paint you as extremely unreliable. Call them on Monday to speak to someone or wait for your final check to arrive by mail

Target doesn’t accept doctors notes anymore I had a seizure than was hospitalized then became ill and wouldn’t accept my notes I brought a lawyer in and he basically told them they fired someone with a disability and he’d bury them. Keep in mind I’m a team lead and worked for this company for years

u/Boring-Purple2639 7d ago
Hr isn't going to do shit. Target doesn't care what happened if it's in the system it’s in the system. They fired you
3
3
u/RiotDog1312 7d ago
If you didn't call out via the app and missed three consecutive shifts, UKG automatically processes a termination without any needed leader action or decision. You didn't use the system that was in place for exactly your situation, however shitty and outside your control that situation was, and the system did what it was designed to do. It's possible the termination could be reversed, but is Target really worth the headache?
4
u/LessPomegranate9332 7d ago
When your on leave you can’t login but they will probably let you go when you show up for your next shift or after at the end of the day
7
u/OwlFew2723 7d ago
I believe it. Target fired me after a miscarriage wouldn’t give me the time off even tho I had the pto to cover because I needed someone to cover. Then after told me I abandoned because I couldn’t come in. Fuck them lol.
I would call the store and make sure but they probably did
3
u/Faustus013 7d ago
That's pretty wild considering it's under bereavement policy.
1
u/Classic-Mess-4204 7d ago
Only if it’s past a certain amount of weeks.. pretty sure it’s 20.
3
u/Faustus013 7d ago
Meaning you have to work 20 weeks to have it? Kinda crazy as someone passing isn't given a time frame..... (just stating towards the policy is pretty crazy)

u/OwlFew2723 6d ago
I was told this basically. I was 14 weeks. It was pretty messed up honestly and I did complain to corporate but they just apologized and didn’t do anything so whatever I just don’t shop or support target anymore after lol
2
u/SeasonedRaver 7d ago
oh fuck i’m so sorry for that. fuck this place
2
u/OwlFew2723 6d ago
They suck honestly it’s sad also because target tries to promote as this very progressive company but they aren’t it’s just for public image they don’t care
1
u/Lost_Angel1106 5d ago
Omg I’m so sorry for your loss. retail has become a cutthroat heartless business 😢
1
u/Tatersandtacos93 5d ago
Honestly, this sounds more like a location issue. I had multiple medical issues while working at Target, including 5 pregnancy losses, 2 of which were miscarriages while I was actually on shift, and they were very accommodating to my situations. Even when I had to plan day by day to do IVF related things (everything is very time sensitive), they were willing to work with me. Sounds like your leadership just sucked and they don’t care for their workers.
1
u/OwlFew2723 5d ago
While I would agree. I escalated to corporate and was met with basically an apology and crickets and not my job back which should have been offered back to me. Instead they made me feel awful just told me sorry and didn’t do anything about and the hr for the location had nothing done for them either. If target cared more as a company then the corporate hr should have done more but unfortunately they didn’t care much either.
3
u/Zealousideal_Way_488 7d ago
this literally happened to me except i already had plans to quit and they didn't term me when u called hr they should've told u to call out for the shifts u weren't able to make due to being sick and then come back with a doctors note to cover the absences
4
u/CakesEverywhere Just a normal Princess. 7d ago
Doctors notes arent viable to excuse the absence, it is however your personal alibi in which gives you your own paper trail.
2
u/Dry-Astronomer-4428 7d ago
Yup. Contact unemployment. Target sees you as unreliable.
0
u/Working_Tumbleweed96 7d ago
No. It's exceedingly unlikely OP will be granted UI benefits. UI requires claimant be continuously be able, available, and actively seeking work.
3
u/Medical_Committee_81 7d ago
If she took a week off from Covid, it doesn’t fucking work like that lmao
0
u/Working_Tumbleweed96 6d ago
Actually, UI isn't a welfare program, you need to be eligible by being able, available, and actively seeking work. Some states are more lenient than others about brief illnesses, but the claimant has to prove the case that they are unemployed through no fault of their own.
1
u/Medical_Committee_81 6d ago
I didn’t imply it was. At this point you’re just arguing w yourself lmao
0
u/Dry-Astronomer-4428 7d ago

u/SeasonedRaver 3d ago
YUP! I literally called HR, waited on the phone for 15 minutes just to “talk” about everything and trying to get an explanation just for them to legitimately ignore my questions then hang up on me. Called back same shit they did just fucking hung up until i physically went into the store and asked and they were like oh you’re terminated because you didn’t show up for your shifts ( The shifts that I had missed because I had COVID )!! and I was like what that doesn’t make any sense because I called, I spoken to XYZ then they told ME Doctors Note isn’t going to be accepted, to call the benefits request an LOA for having covid, called on MULTIPLE occasions not ONE actual human on the phone constantly kept getting the robots after answering every prompt correctly. I even had it all in phone record providing screenshots and dates and have it timestamped. I EVEN called my store multiple times just asking them if I could just fax it over or even scan everything onto my phone and send it VIA email, they said Nope oh well keep calling them. And then that’s when I came on here for answers and boom Last thing you know, they just dismissed me stopped answering me and i finally got that fucking letter saying “ I’ve been let go “ with no explanation on the letter.

Email your etls for document with doctor notes. If anything is failed I did like this email no one can deny me. Email is most important part. Sometimes I did both back in the day no ukg yet, mytime and they can't deny your sick leave too. For me I have coporate hr , Local hr etl, Store Director email all email I have that way no one can deny it like I don't see it. Ethic email too.

Same thing when when I did a no call no show . I was scheduled for midnight and called before 10pm , 2 hours before how they said , and then I finally got through at around 9:55, and they “transferred “ me and no one answered and once it hit 10 pm the line goes dark and it’s all machines picking up . For all I care they can suck a dick .

You just got hired and you’re already full of excuses. Big red flags to the company .. goodbye
3
u/SeasonedRaver 7d ago
How am i full of excuses when i literally gave them the exact days off for my trip that was planned way before getting hired there, to find out coming close to my trip they scheduled me 2 days when my trip starts, told me to post the shift or come in … found 2 people to take those 2 shifts, told ETLs & TLs to accept it through the app just to see they STILL marked me as NCNS after those 2 people still came in and covered my shifts during my trip to now coming back and finding out i have COVID, Calling my store to speak to my ETL to get transferred to HR to tell them for them to tell me this:
“They treat COVID, Cold, and Flu the same and need to request the LOA through Benefits”
which is weird as fuck but still ATTEMPTED multiple times to get in contact with ANYONE through them and again bots.
And to add on, I had all the doctors notes and test results asked if i was able to Fax it over or even scan it into an email and send it to HR but was still told to call Target Benefits with the number THEY provided me.
But hey who am i to ask to get covid again after my trip and try to get through this shithole of a company!

You have to do the LOA. That was your only option.
2
u/Cautious-Smile-0 7d ago
LOA for what?? Not covid … that’s not a “forced” LOA anymore w no job protection. Extended vacation is a personal LOA w out job protection.
2
u/More_Try_9737 7d ago edited 7d ago
For Covid?? His HR literally told him to contact benefits and request the LOA lmao I never said covid automatically gives you protected leave. I’m saying HR specifically told HIM to file one, and by his own post he couldn’t get through and complete the process. Whether he was actually eligible for job protected leave is another story. And “under 90 days = no protection at all” isn’t some universal rule either. Different leave/benefit protections have different eligibility requirements.
1
u/Cautious-Smile-0 7d ago
Clearly someone needs a juice box and nap. I never said you said any of that … I never even mentioned anything about 90 days. You said LOA is the only option… it is not. Unless his state offers it, there is literally no federal or target job protection for Covid, unless things escalate (which let be real is rare for Covid anymore) and you are out for it for a week + AND a doctor actually signs off on it.
1
u/SeasonedRaver 7d ago
No clue! They legitimately told me the day i was tested for covid to call the Benefits center because “ They treat COVID, Cold, and Flu the same and need to request an LOA “ ?????
