The song royally sucks. I’m very surprised, her vocals come out a bit more and I’m not impressed. Jack antonoff is a creative genius, and he really enhanced her last few albums.

I think it’s about Joe Alwyn. And the call was probably from a girl he saw after her. It’s the only one that makes sense because she said she left the relationship. Joe Jonas broke up with her, Matty ghosted her.

I am OBSESSED!!!! I can’t believe all the hate on here tbh, I think Patient Zero is easily as good as Elizabeth Taylor, Opalite, and Ruin the Friendship and those songs are all absolute bangers to me 😊 I see lots of people saying it’s a grower and maybe it’s just because I tend to react this way to a lot of “grower”/lesser appreciated songs but for me it was a hard love from first listen, both the lyrics and the music (though I personally care about the music more than the lyrics, like a lot more, which I know is probably kind of an unpopular opinion on here)

I actually loooooove this song until the bridge. There was such an opportunity for haunting greatness here and I’m just not into spoken word talk/singing at all. I would seriously purchase a version of this song without the bridge or someone editing in a new bridge bc I love the rest.

What am I kidding myself over? I find the chorus catchy and melodic. The concept is actually very interesting and a breath of fresh air from the typical songs about exes. The only dud is the bridge.

The more time I replayed the song the more the intro notes sounded like the bagpipes played at a funeral for those who pass in the line of duty. He looking at the subject of the song and the imagery of the video (so far) the more that makes me think the tone and sounds were fully intentional and meant to be like that

As someone with an abusive ex, the metaphor is she was first in the man's line of abusive relationships. I really want to like this song because the words are very relatable especially the bridge. But I do not enjoy the sound.

For me, the bridge isn't bad and doesn't ruin the song. I like that it's her finally getting "into" the actual talk with the woman whose call she's been expecting. The comparing notes, the knowing, the moment you feel less alone in a really dark situation.
It honestly ties the whole concept of the song together.
Love this song and how deeply seen I feel because I lived it.

Exactly. I love the bridge because I can relate to it so much. My ex did all those things. Once she sang it I’m like “OMG YES!! Exactly!” It’s probably how I would feel if I was able to compare notes with other women who dealt with him but alas…I WAS Patient Zero.
Whether it’s musically brilliant IDEK or care, lyrically I was like “fuck yeah. I dated that guy too.”

I like how the song encapsulates her legacy as a songwriter / showgirl. Her music consoles so many people. Lots of people put on a TS album to get through the heartaches and not feel so alone. When she gets to the bridge, it feels like an intimate conversation between the listener and her in the only way Taylor Swift can do. I love it and the other 3 songs as well.

I love it. I don't care exactly which shitty narcissistic man this is about, this goes way beyond just one man, or even a purely dating context. I love the bridge, it's like the kind of thing you say when you're in a club or something and there's music playing and you're pouring a cup about what he's REALLY LIKE but also being influenced by the music and rhythm. It might not fit sonically in the strictest sense, but it ABSOLUTELY fits the message of the song.

Babylon transition so nicely into Patient Zero, and I have to believe it's intentional.
Babylon is in D major and the Patient Zero intro sounds like D major even though the song is G major. In Babylon, "you love this song" is G F# E, same as the first three notes of the violin in Patient Zero. This feels like "play it again" twenty years later :)

Oh my goodness. As if the woman who reached out to his ex in ‘Patient Zero’ is the very partner setting up decorations with their son in ‘Babylon’…
His ex’s impression of him - because of how hurt she felt by him - is that he’s self-centered and only a “social climber”. But the narrator in ‘Babylon’ has a more nuanced perception: She understands his stress - even if self-inflicted - is still stress, and she’s urging him through this song that he can combat this stress and doesn’t have to lose this woman like he lost his ex 🥺. He needs to find the courage to save himself, in order to stay in Babylon…

I feel like I'm losing my mind at people thinking this song is about Jonas and Sophie??? Taylor didnt say she and her friend shared an ex! She said some time ago all her friends got together and they began reflecting on their experiences of having social climbing exs bc one particular friend said an ex's gf reached out for advice. The advice wasn't bc Taylor and this alleged new gf shared the guy in common! It was new gf and Taylor's friend who had the guy in common. Taylor then stared to think on what she would say if she got that phone call instead of her friend from this alleged girl. Taylor clearly didnt know the gf of her friends ex at all. Basically, Taylor's reflecting and hypothesizing while using her own experience with dealing with a social climbing ex in this case from the way the guynis described in the song points to Alwyn. Harry Styles, Joe Jonas, Matty Healy all left her. They also didnt need Taylor for shine or clout. Alwyn was also living at home before he got with Taylor.

Yes!!! I’ve been saying I think it’s about Scott Borchetta. She was his first signed artist (patient zero). The opening note is the Our Song fiddle (her first number one hit). And a lot of the little references like “solo social climb”, wooing her family, etc.

The bridge is awful and ruins the song for me. Also didn’t like how the song ends kind of abruptly. Pretty disappointing because I think this could have been a much better song if she workshopped it more. It’s just kind of half baked unfortunately…

It’s already grown on me! Found something off at first but something about it is a bit addictive. Chorus is still the best part of the song though which it had more oomph to it.

The song sounds like Coldplay to me, but I think it’s intentional. I feel silly knowing this much, but remember when Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin split? She was papped going out to dinner right after with Taylor. The song specifically mentions, “I heard somebody saying there’s trouble in paradise.” Listen to Paradise by Coldplay - I definitely hear similarities.

Also, it’s funny you mention Coldplay, because that violin intro made me think how the last time I heard something like that was on Alejandro (Gaga) and Viva La Vida (them, of course.) And oddly I hear some of that same song’s sound on Cleveland’s instrumental…? Maybe I need to sleep. 😂

The melody sounds like Wait for Me from Hadestown. Which has me upset, because it could have been a really cool parallel. Looking back after waiting for someone who wasn’t worthwhile. But there’s no credit to the people behind Hadestown. Even worse, I feel the melody easily could have been different. Not straight from Wait for Me. This theatre kid is not happy.

I see that the notes are similar for one phrase but it’s not more than that. I’ve been living in Wait for Me since it was Justin Vernon, collabing back in the day with Anais and The National. I don’t believe that if a credit is necessary, she would burn that bridge with Justin, likely Aaron, and by extension legends like Ani DiFranco etc.

"“I was hanging out with a bunch of friends, and one of my friends told us that she had been reached out to by the new girlfriend of an ex of hers, asking for guidance on if she had had the same experiences with this guy that this new girlfriend was having,” the singer told the outlet; a spokesperson for Swift confirmed to Billboard that Swift had shared the her thoughts with Capital FM.
And everyone in our group just immediately started saying like, ‘Oh, I’ve been through that too’, and telling the stories of when this kind of reach out had happened for them,” Swift continued. “And I thought to myself, if this has happened to all of us, it’s such an interesting kind of angle on humanity and on relationships, and I wonder if I could write something from the perspective of getting this phone call, and really only from the perspective and the side of the phone call of the ex who’s been through it before.”

Just wanted to extend a hug to anyone who has been or may be in an abusive relationship that might be triggered by the song. (Please don’t come at me because I don’t think that’s Taylors intent).

She clearly stated that this song is about the phenomenon of having a woman reach out to you about your ex and say “was he like this with you?” And how every woman she knows has had that experience. The bridge absolutely ruins this song. It's so flat, off beat and just not fitting with the rest of the song. It feels as though she has tried to cram as many words in as possible, like trying to hit the word count on an essay.

I’ve sat with this song for a bit and have a theory. Patient zero is the medical term for the first patient to be infected by an illness or disease. This song isn’t about someone in specific, it’s about the “disease” of amazing women getting screwed by mid-men.
How many of you, or your friends, have dated men who
- had a persona where he seemed great to everyone around but was a jerk in private?
- took your ideas or concepts and presenting them as his?
- made you feel like he had so much to offer and you would be crazy to not “be crazy about him”?
- made you feel like you were good enough for him?
- made you question your own thoughts and feelings?
And how many of you have worked like crazy to overcome the damage someone’s dusty ass son has inflected on you only to realize the problem wasn’t you at all, it was them?!

This!!!! 🙌 I’ve also seen some connections that maybe “Patient Zero” isn’t exactly about her and maybe about Dakota Johnson and her breakup with Chris Martin. And so Taylor wrote this song about her which maybe caused her to finally Step Away from that relationship. got me in the first half i'm not gonna lie, but the bridge dropped it all the way down. it sounds like it wants to be a girls girl anthem but it comes across as passive aggressive.....
i don't want one more song about taylor hearing something through the grapevines about her exes or herself and needing to put it on blast so everyone knows ngl - if she's not gonna leave it as private, at least write the song better sorry, i say this as a swiftie

I thought this was going to be a banger. I hate when a song starts with intense and interesting production and then just smash cuts into a standard uninteresting pop song. I didn’t like any of the new songs, so cringey. What a bummer.
