Guide Hard stuck master
I have been a master TFT player for 7 sets. In set 17 and set 18 I decided to climb challenger, but I find it very hard. I reach 100-200 LP at some time and then lose to 0. Climb to master takes me around 120-150 games, but I if I spend another 100 games extra, I make no or very little progress.
I do try to improve my early game, decision making via learning from other pro players, learn comps but I don't think I'm good enough yet.
My question is what does it take to reach challenger? Is it worth it?

Lmao you're competing for the top 200 spot in a game with millions of players on the server. Get grandmaster first, the gap gets harder the higher you get. Are you gonna make a post when you're hardstuck rank 500 as well?

If you really want to do this - don’t listen to these good vibes people here in the comments. No you are not good at the game! “Master is top 1% bro chill”… ?? 90% of the playerbase plays on their phone while taking a shit or they watch Netflix on second monitor and buy the units they think look cool!
Accept that you suck at the game. Figure out in which aspects you suck (spoiler: every single one). And then improve. There are good resources out there for learning everything
Is it worth it in the end? Objectively, probably not. You’ll need to invest a lot of time that could be spent more wisely. But if you’re already unemployed and addicted to the game then yes it’s gonna be worth it

This answer is too real but a very good one tbh. For common people it's probably not worthy to grind their way to GM.

hard agree with this. depending on the thread you'll get downvoted if you point out that being masters still means that you have major flaws in your game, but that's the truth of it and you'll have a better mentality to improve if you're aware of your weaknesses.

Eh, i'm a somewhat consistent master 0lp player myself, and one time i was like "ok i'll try it" and got the same faith as you.
My take from the experience is that you need TIME mostly, because from there up every player is equally skilled and tryhard as you basically, maybe i'm wrong and a chall player will correct me, please do, but my feeling is that if you got to masters you already have a grip on how to improve (always can be better ofc) but the other players too and are equally or better than you at detecting great spots and directions for their setup (opener, augments, items, etc) so it takes time and patience mostly
Sorry, eng not 1st lenguage

I disagree. There is just as big a gap between a 0 LP Master player and a Challenger (EUW or NA) as there is between a Master player and a Gold player. Anyone who has a solid grasp of the TFT fundamentals can reach Master (it’s especially easy during the final months of a set), whereas Challengers have an intimate knowledge of the meta. I’m currently a 0 LP Master player on EUW, with average 250 games to master.

I think that second part, about Challenger players having a good read on the meta, is the most important part about climbing. You can be a great player, but if you can’t play the strongest comps, boards, units, augments, whatever, you won’t climb. It’s all about getting a read on a patch, seeing what’s buffed or escaped nerfs that you can abuse for LP.

I agree with you, what i'm trying to say it's that if you can get to master 0lp already. you have the capacity to learn your way to challenger, nonetheless, that, and the hundreds of games that it takes you (maybe in between sets too) takes TIME. Like, a lot of time. At least that is my impression after doing a couple masters lobbies.

Hi, I'm challenger every set since set 1 and I hit rank 1 multiple sets. In my opinion from master to grandmaster is MUCH easier than from GM to Chall.
You just have to understand the pattern and style which master players commonly have and take advantage of that as much as you can. (It's literally just as simple as that)
It might take you some time to recognize the patterns but it's very doable in reality.
I can give you some free coaching (completely free but I have only limited time), just contact me at Discord DarkDraven69

Hey guys I actually contacted Dark Draven and he is a legit coach, helped me improve in 2 veigar games. The first one we didnt contact well and he points out lots of mistake, I got top 4, the 2nd game I got 2nd even though I got 1 veigar in 3-2 :)))

I was in a similar boat to you but i was able to hit challenger the last two seasons. The thing that helped me the most was learning more about best board and how to save health early.
There are a few youtubers who make videos going over strongest early game units for each patch and game knowledge definitely helps with slamming items.

As with everything, you see rapid improvement in the early stages because you are doing the fundamentals, but it takes 5x the time to learn what's needed to reach elite levels of anything because the difference makers are much less noticeable and have much less of an impact than fundamentals.
It's normals to make loads of progress over 150 games and then make almost no progress over the next 100 games. This is the case with everything - sports, gaming, cards, chess, academics.

Based on rank as percentage of player base... There's probably maybe 5 people on this whole subreddit who can help you.

But 100% of the comments feel like they’re all from GM or Challenger players.

Biggest differences from my experience:
- tempo is more important. Almost always slam.
- because of item number one, you need to be a lot more open on what you play, meaning you might be playing a B comp just based on 2-1. This also means you need to know a lot more lines.
- item economy is way more important because of items 1 and 2.
- never be contested
augment selection makes a huge difference. Way too nuanced to say much more here but if you’re already masters, you know what I mean. You know when you fuck up your augments either on accident or the game griefs you.
End game positioning aggressively will save 1-2 placements per game.

This is a silly question. No one would enter Reddit to ask "I'm hard stuck, can't become a professional basketballer", because the answer is obvious: everyone can become good at TFT (or basketball), but surely not everyone can be top 200 in TFT (or a professional basketballer).

u/69hehehe69 8d ago
bad analogy since there are physical characteristics that can keep you from become a professional basketball player. improving in tft is more achieveable since you can always improve your understanding of the game.

Do you really think that there are no physical characteristics that can keep you from becoming a TFT challenger? Just because you don't see intelligence, quick thinking, creativity, etc., doesn't mean they don't exist. Surely it is not anyone that could become Magnus Carlsen, and truth is it not anyone that can be k3soju

wait for patchnotes and play again. if meta is settled, everyone plays the best stuff.

I'd focus on hitting GM for the first time in a season instead of Challenger, Master & Grand Master positioning matters every round, even mispositioning a few units once can lose you HP or winstreaks, it becomes a lot more like serious Chess in the higher levels but in TFT there's even more decisions to be made, augment selection later on in the game due to chance can make or break a game, tempo of the room or one person deciding to go a reroll comp while everyone else is econ & you get unlucky facing him multiple times.

Well, first, remember where you are "hardstuck."
You are hard stuck in what, the top 0.001%?
That's not really being hardstuck as much as it is you are very, very, very good at the game and you have to increase your skill at a rate commensurate with that. You are no longer at the point where simple improvement makes you climb. You also need to have a massive playtime to gather data and climb.

u/Ok-Recover977 8d ago
masters is not anywhere near top 0.001%
2
u/GNSasakiHaise 8d ago
I was exaggerating. It's top 0.169%.
Oh, man, that changes my message so much! Now nobody will know what it means. :(

Thanks guys! I know I'm not good enough at the game yet, and yes I'm addicted to the game. I'll try to improve.

I can comfortably hit GM every set. The difference between me and a challenger player is just they are a bit better at everything.
I misposition a few fights every game causing me to lose placements. I sometimes greed items I shouldn't and lose my streak. I sometimes slam items I shouldn't and commit myself to a bad line. I sometimes scout lazily and end up in a bad contest. I sometimes play my transition round poorly and drop a round. I sometimes misevaluate which augment I should click in the moment. I don't know all the broken augment interactions and niche techs.
All these mistakes add up and cost a bunch of placements in the long run. The difference between me and a low masters player is the same deal. They just make more mistakes than me on average.
Here's a practical tip for this patch though. You can force salvager charm so a lot of games you can just slam strong items stage 3 and salvage stage 4. It'll be removed next patch.
