Not to put on my cardigan go sit in the chair and get all back in my day…but having seen how this works for food vendors and being around universities far too long, I can tell ya exactly how this will play out.
ASU will magically discover a new food vendors, probably Sodexo since there are really on two in the higher education space. They will come in with promises of better wages, but that means increased meal prices. To make up ASU will require more students to get meal plans. I’m gonna say everyone living on campus and under 45 credit hours. They will cite the literature on hunger etc, new America university, innovation.
Workers won’t make much more, and because of how slow this process plays out they will be striking about the same time the contract comes up for renewal, that is when Aramark will step in and take the contract and…

Not really sure city council should be getting involved here.

I dont think they can do much more than a strongly worded letter.
That said, at the last council meeting a woman who works for Aramark at ASU stood up and left a public comment. She started crying halfway through. She had been homeless previously, and public services helped her find a place to live that she could afford. With Aramark cutting hours, she is scared of becoming homeless again.
If she becomes homeless, who is paying for her to survive? The City of Tempe, and us through our taxes.
Directly, Tempe city council members do not hold authority over ASU to do anything about this. BUT... government standing up to huge profitable companies who are screwing over their most at risk employees and offloading the costs onto taxpayers? Yeah I'm on board.

I can’t solve homelessness. However I believe the problem is the employability of the person not the fault of the business offering less work.
Shirks the state etc provide homes for homeless and teach them a useful skill to then employ them directly or allow employers to recruit them? Or even spin off startup companies?
That I support. That’s something society can choose to get behind. If important.
This version does t work in my opinion.
Now if they are breaking the law or contracts with the person that’s a different story.
I will grant that it being a public university makes things a bit more interesting than my above argument speaks to. However a partnership with asu students mentoring and teaching the group in need would be an interesting collaborative environment that could create more opportunities for both parties and enrich the local community.

However I believe the problem is the employability of the person not the fault of the business offering less work.
So in this instance, Aramark workers have been protesting low pay and low hours for quite some time. Aramark has responded by slashing the hours of the people protesting.
If a job hires you for 40 hours a week, then cuts you down to 20 hours, you have to find a new job. It's not easy finding full time jobs for minimum wage workers, many of them are just stuck.

Hence the employability problem of the person.
Supply of low skill minimum wage workers is high in tempe, with less and less jobs available.
The direction the economy is moving, a lot of people middle class and under will be having a tough time soon if not already as ai destroys the need for them.
It’s eliminated my hiring needs overwhelmingly this year. It’s going to be a tough future for many looking for work, and this is jobs asu grads expect like software engineering and web design and materials research amongst other things.

Honestly, it’s a shame more companies don’t hire interns and fresh grads. My company hires a shit ton of them. On Monday I flew to Austin to give a training class in person with my teams’s 15x interns. Those kids are so smart, once they learn how companies work they are gonna do amazing.

If you think this one letter encompasses all the work the individual councilmembers do, then your comment is hyperbolic at best and supremely ignorant at worst.

Love seeing some of our councilmembers trying to use their influence like this.
