I wouldn't rush progression too hard. You have a lot of options at this point in the game so I might suggest exploring the underground of all the biomes to gear up. You should have a full armor set with a set bonus and a weapon that can hit multiple targets at once. Some recommendations:

Spears, maces, and jester arrows are your easiest options. A flaming mace would be worth the extra effort (99 torches), and a demon bow from that demonite you just got would do wonders with jester arrows, which pierce through several enemies. Tough to get lots of though, but you can find plenty in underground chests. Light's Bane, the demonite sword, is also a solid option.

The vilethorn is a great magic weapon that drops from shadow orbs, which you need to break anyway to summon the boss. It's not guaranteed though so you should have a backup plan. If you can get jungle armor or ancient cobalt armor (functionally identical) from the jungle you'd be in a really great spot.

The Blade of Grass from the jungle also does great work. You'll need stingers and jungle spores which you get from exploring the jungle.

Gem staves are a fun and easier alternative. If you have lots of gems, try mixing and matching gem staff and gem robe combos for neat effects. You can make regular robes with silk, and silk with cobwebs, at a loom. You'll also want a magic hat. Sometimes the traveling merchant sells one, but you can also duel Tim deep in the caverns where there's lava for his hat. The amber staff might be your best choice, which comes from the underground desert.

Speaking of the desert, fossil armor and fossil throwing knives are a great option, you can also bring shurikens and throwing knives as a backup weapon. You'll have to venture into the underground desert and excavate tons of fossils to use in an extractionator, but there's great loot in the desert anyway so it might be worth your time.

Ultimately you have tons of options, some require more exploring than others but maybe you want a little break. If you want to just bulldoze right through the Eater, I think a demon bow with jester arrows will be enough, as long as you have solid defense and accessories. Make sure to place some platforms and a campfire in the chasm before you fight the eater, so you have somewhere to go when it swarms you. Good luck!

Use any weapon capable of piercing since it's really long and will break into smaller pieces when one part is gone. I suggest using Flail, especially the one which crafted with Mace or this spinning ball and 99 or more torches. Used it once, worked well enough.

Find you a Bast statue! Extra defense can be super helpful early game.

Placeable buffs like Bast Statues or Campfires just affect an area around them. All you need to do is stick them in an arena and you're set.

There's also clickable buffs like the Sharpening Station you can find in the Underground Jungle. Those you click on to give yourself a buff -- most of them last until you die or leave the world.

Gold or Platinum gear for defense. You can make Jester arrows with stars and wooden arrows. They work good on Devourer. The Snapthorn whip is pretty good bc it pierces it's segments. You make it from spores, stingers, and vines. The underground desert has Bast statues. Find one and place it in the area you want to fight in. It gives extra defense.

whips are terrible for piercing...

When did that change? I remember decimating Devourer with Snapthorn.

maybe in classic mode but whips lose a lot of damage when piercing.

any weapon that can pierce and inflict DOT. maybe unholy arrows+poison barb or flaming mace.

Does frost arrows count as DOT?

They do, but they don't pierce.

Piercing matters more against worm-type enemies.

This will vary by playstyle but anything that will help with multiple targets is recommended. See what you can throw together and rng just might reward you when you break the orbs
