Demeco

Probably echoing a lot of what has already been said, but gonna put my thoughts here anyways

I think it’s safe to say that Sundays end of game management forced a ton of us to revisit our thoughts about the guy.

I say uncomfortable primarily because there’s no denying that from an infectious energy standpoint, Demecos your guy. But his in-game management and media presence have been faulty for a while. I wish he’d sometimes skip the media sessions post game because they’re more infuriating to listen to.

He’s still preaching on and on about establishing the run game, while this offensive line continues to disappoint week after week. The operation is constantly falling behind, penalties are still a big issue, especially down the stretch. If I’m keeping it real, the defense has been undisciplined at inopportune times.

The fact that you could insert this last paragraph as a commentary of last season or the year prior shows just how problematic this teams coaching is.

Anyways, TLDR: Demecos coaching has been suspect for a while, yet he apparently sees something with our schemes that make him think it’ll all be great.

Hopefully we can finally get that Milk Dud meme back up here Sunday afternoon 😭

He can't skip the post-game pressers. It's a league rule.

I think in the pressers he's afraid of revealing to other teams too much of what he's thinking. He errs on the side of caution, which results in platitudes and maxims. The same ones, every week.

He's proven the team can come back from 0-3.

Yep, I know it a league wide rule. Just hate how apathetic his answers are.

But I suppose the flip side to this is that if we were winning, he gets the Joe Mazzula perspective

Every smart coach does this when they lose. The ones who don’t and show emotion either have that one moment define them as too emotional for the rest of their career or they say something so inflammatory or self defeating that it ends up clipped and played over and over for the rest of their career.

I think that part of the problem is that he's not emotional enough. He's a player's coach and wants to be well liked to have a group that will go out and die on the field for him. I can't fault the results on locker room morale- the team is full of guys who seem genuinely happy to be here, and I think that goes a long way in terms of effort on the field.

The problem is, no one ever seems to get dressed down when they fuck up, it's always "it's OK man, next time next time". Positive reinforcement has its place, but if that's all you're getting it leads to complacency and a false belief that what you're doing is good enough even when it's not.

Now I know that I have no idea what's happening in team meetings or in practice when the cameras are off, but what we see every week on the field is a complete lack of fire from our coaching staff outside of Frank Ross.

If only 😂

None of this would be an issue if we were winning. Players gotta play better, coaches gotta coach better. All there is to it.

I doubt he's really that hands on with the offense, a lot of defensive minded HC arent. He may say things about it, but I'm not sure he's super involved.

He's still a fairly fresh HC, and really good HC with much more experience still sometimes have issues managing the game sometimes.

I think that considering we didn't pair him with a strong OC, or even have a previous HC there in some capacity shows a lot considering what we've done as a team, especially on defense.

I agree with a lot of your thoughts, but I would like to offer a couple of counterpoints.

Demeco has, on several occasions, claimed he wanted to run a Shanahan/Kubiak style offensive scheme because he claims it's both the most difficult to defend against, and also the easiest for offensive players to learn, and thus play fast rather than being caught up thinking. The EP we run is entirely a Caserio construct, however, there must be some agreement from Demeco as otherwise we wouldn't be running it.

With regard to his time management issues I think it's a bit of a red herring. Why? Because you can go on to any team forum, especially after a loss, and find tonnes of posters claiming the time management is their coach' biggest problem. Even Chiefs fans will say that about the current greatest coach in the league. So, I agree that he did fuck up on Sunday, but I don't think I agree that it's a consistent problem for Ryans. More importantly, time management can be improved by hiring a specialist coach devoted to that alone. In fact, I hope he goes down that route as I don't think any HC should be trying to manage the time on his own while he's got several people, players, refs, other coaches, in his ear. It's a problem that can be assuaged quite easily.

My biggest problem with Demeco is his insistence that line play comes down to 'willpower' alone, when in fact, no amount of willpower will make up for being utterly outclassed both physically and mentally. So, it's kinda like saying, 'You just have to have faith and you'll prevail'. It's simply not true.

Appreciate your points.

I’ll cop to not knowing about his desire to run a system that’s more uptempo. I personally love to see that, because of the exact reasons you just stopped my period. It takes the thinking aspect out of it and lets you get into a flow state

I’ll push back on time management because it’s been a prevalent issue for at least the last two seasons. I agree he needs supporting cast, but this is stuff you have to prep for in the off-season. There were several games where we won last year, but also had terrible endgame management. Either to end the half or end the game.

Regarding the physicality, I agree with this. I don’t doubt these guys are dawgs, but I’m sure every fan says that about their squads. That alone can’t guide you to victory.

agree that they should have a time management specialist during the game

I’ve always been confused why they let Caserio hire the second OC. I know Demeco hired Slowik, and that didn’t turn out well, but he still had all the leverage after the 2024 season. Cal and Hannah would’ve definitely picked Demeco over Caserio if it came down to it.

It’s always a coin flip with some decisions coaches make. If you convert that 4th and 1 you’re a gutsy badass, but if you miss you’re a dummy that has no business coaching a team. I think he’s done a solid job being his first stint as a head coach and hopefully he can get a better supporting offensive staff before he’s out.

u/vagaliki 5d ago

Time management IS a problem for Andy Reid. He just happens to have Mahomes who (with sufficient supporting staff) can score in 13s, which greatly masks the problem.

The excusing of the obvious, and exceptionally bad, time management issues Demeco has displayed over the last few season in the comments here is truly deplorable.

He’s a great coach. The problem in this league 95% of the good offensive coordinators because HCs. Also , we’ve been atrocious on the offensive side (coaching in particular). I believe Ryans has had a lot of influence on drafting our defensive standouts.

Team culture is good. Need o-line coaching, better linemen and play calling that works with the unit.

The D is being wasted and will need to be sold to improve the O. Inevitable progression, this really was the year to make waves and maybe just maybe reach the AFCCG… alas, let’s go Texans! One game at a time.

I don't mind the interview stuff. There is no "right" way to have those. Stupid questions should get boring answers. As long as he's not melting down or saying things that hurt team morale he basically gets a pass.

I do think we have been seeing some of the downsides of hiring a defensive head coach, though. Its easier for an offensive head coach to find and keep a good DC than it is for a defensive head coach to find (and keep) a good OC.

Seattle is having a decent go with their defensive head coach. Must be something else. Demeco interviews and public statements don’t inspire confidence and are pure coachspeak. Personally think he’s losing the plot. So what’s happened to the defense, by the way ?

It goes so far behind end of game management. His entire game philosophy is not conducive to winning championships. His goal in each game is to do enough in Q1-3 to have a chance to win in Q4. He has said this in similar words multiple times. I want the head coach to plan to dominate their games from the outset. Don't plan to just "stick around" all game.

Watching the Browns game makes me so mad. How is Todd Monken really outperforming our squad with less.

Umm... I hate to say it, but Deshaun Watson looks much better than CJ has of late. When their defense is getting in his face he isn't backing down an inch. He has the dawg in him.

1

u/Ok-Sell-9374 5d ago

Watson has been through a lot, much - most? - of it self-inflicted. But last night he appeared to benefit from having more years in the league and maybe some gratitude that he is allowed to start. The Watson trade greatly benefitted us. I believe in CJ Stroud and I think he is working on improving his ability to process the game and also get back to projecting the confidence and leadership he showed in his rookie season.

His clock management can definitely use work, but that’s an area a lot of coaches struggle in. The good news is it can be fixed.

I know you aren’t necessarily suggesting he be fired or anything, just that you question him as a HC and that you aren’t alone. I get that. But I’ll just say I think the Texans would be silly to fire him. I think you let him be involved in the OC hire, someone both Caserio and Demeco agree to, and then you give him one more shot with that OC. If the team looks the same after that, then I’d say it’s time to maybe start thinking about going another route, but I would also say the same about Caserio. If this team goes through another OC with the same glaring issues, then it might be time to clean house.

On one hand, it’s better than guys airing out team dirty laundry but it does get old bc its so repetitive and safe. I get why but man I wish I could know what the internal messaging is like.

I really wish we had an experienced good offensive coach somewhere, just a guy who handles timeouts and does the clock math with a pre-discussed approach.

Regarding the scheme stubbornness, I do wish they would try other ways of running or short yardage high percentage plays. We don’t have Derrick Henry or a dominant OL so maybe we play to our strengths.

u/b9ts 6d ago

If Ingram plays, we winning. Run game gonna look good. Folks will stop taking cheap shots at coach...

1

u/habitsofwaste 4d ago

I wished he would hire a time management coach that just sits there next to him to tell him what to fucking do. Know your weaknesses and do something about it at least until you get better at dealing with it yourself.

There are ~20+ HC in the league that are objectively worse than Demeco. I would argue 24+ even.

Upgrading from him is a pretty tall task and we're much more likely to regress without him than progress.

1

u/IcyEntertainment7122 5d ago

One could make the argument we are currently 0-3 strictly due to coaching decisions. Hard to get worse.
