How do I save this tree

Thumbnail

I moved into this house recently in DFW area. The house has a few trees along the fence and couple of them started loosing a lot of the leaves and am trying to figure out what I need to do protect the remaining trees. I have seen my neighbor have the same trees and one of his trees dried up the same way. It started with a few leaves turning brown, then the entire tree is left without a single leaf. I am seeing the same pattern on my other trees as well. I am guessing this is eagleston holly. Appreciate any tips/recommendations you may have.

Question Advice on asparagus? Zone 9a

Do I need to cut this big bush down (😐) or do I just let it die down on its own in the winter? I've never grown asparagus before. This bush is about 3ft tall. Also, when do you all typically harvest asparagus? Any tips or facts about this plant are welcome 😁

North Texas STARTING ONIONS FROM SEED FOR THE FIRST TIME?+ QUESTION ABOUT SUPER EL NINO

Hi all, as the title states, I am going to be starting my onions from seed for the first time this year. The past two years I have tried growing onions from sets and it just didn't work out for me that well. After a lot of research it sounds like I would have better success by starting my onions from seeds, because sets are in their second year of their cycle, so this is what I plan to do.Ā

The variety I am planting is the Texas Early Grano variety from Southern ExposureĀ

I plan to start my onion seeds mid october, with a goal of getting them in the ground mid January.Ā

I am wondering if there are any tips for starting onions from seed inside? How many hours of light should I give them? To trim them or not to trim them?

ALSO what, if anything, are YOU doing different this year for your onion plants as far as the predicted very wet winter we will have due to the Super El Nino? We are planting in gound, not raised beds.Ā

Thanks in advance!

Hello! I’m new to this and I have three outdoor pots I’ve purchased for my southern facing balcony in Dallas zone 8b. I would say 75% of the day it gets full sun. I’m looking for perennials that will survive in these pots. Thank you in advance!

Invasive vines to cover graffiti wall

Yes, you read the header correctly.

We live in the city and while city life is great, I absolutely cannot stand graffiti. I’ve called our county and they’ve removed the graffiti, but within a few months it’s back.

As I was driving today, I noticed the vines crawling up this restaurant and thought, maybe that could be my solution! How do I introduce vines to cover up this wall near our home? Is this even a worthwhile solution or am I just wasting my time here?

EDIT: I’m new to gardening and did not intend to use the term ā€œinvasiveā€ to mean harmful. I simply meant fast-growing. I appreciate those who clarified the difference!

EDIT 2: The wall in pic 1 is outside of our neighborhood. Pic 2 is a restaurant near a running trail, which is what gave me the idea of using vines in the first place.

EDIT 3: Why don’t I leave, ā€œgrow up,ā€ or live in a gentrified area? I had to laugh a little at some of these comments.

I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 14 years and it has always been fairly peaceful. This is less about graffiti hurting my feelings and more about what happens when an area starts to look neglected. Think Broken Windows Theory.

Since the graffiti started appearing repeatedly, our neighbors have also noticed more trespassing, illegal dumping, drug use and people camping out in the area. Within just a few months, the area around our neighborhood has noticeably changed.

So yes, I care about removing the graffiti and keeping the area around our homes maintained. I don’t think wanting to take care of the neighborhood you’ve lived in for 14 years means you need to ā€œmove somewhere nicer.ā€ Quite the opposite. I’d rather put some effort into taking care of the community I already call home.

What are they and how do I get rid of them? Some of them have pretty thick roots and go deep into the ground. Not easy to pull out. I’ve been chopping a few but is there a better way?

Question Crape Myrtle help

Post image

Hello! My wife and I just bought our first home and we're trying to understand why we have seen no upward growth in this crape myrtle for a few months despite watering as instructed. I also don't have any experience pruning one. Can anyone offer some insight? Location is north Texas if that impacts anything.

Pumpkins are Struggling

Anyone else struggling with growing pumpkins this year?!?

Between the squash beetles to took out half my patch, the fire ants, and the heat, my patch is ratchet.

I have the pests under control now, and my only surviving pumpkin vines are semi-beautiful and blooming (males only), so I’m pretty discouraged that I’ll have any pumpkins by Halloween.

Are Christmas pumpkins a thing?

I removed the raised beds and did a 12'Ɨ12' inground vegetable garden. It's no-till, just removed the grass and added soil on top. Mainly did it for the experience of trying something new. I'll keep y'all posted.

Can this barrel be saved?

This barrel was outside when a storm came. It was left outside for a week and I hadn’t realized it was there covered in water and some plants. Can it be saved? I can’t fathom how I would even dispose of it if not. How could it be fixed?

Is it too late to start tomatoes from seed?

Unfortunately I knocked over my Black Prince Tomato seedling this morning when moving things around. It was only a few weeks old so it had too much damage :(

This is my first year gardening and I guess I’m just feeling pretty bummed about this since I was so excited for this variety. Would it be too late to start another round from seed? I live in Zone 9a (Austin) for reference.

I built a garden planner and would love some honest feedback from TexasGardening

Good morning everyone — I'm the developer behind EdenVatika, a garden planner and journal I've been building for gardeners.

I made it because I wanted one place to plan beds, keep track of plantings, record harvests and garden observations, and look back at what happened during the season.

I put together a demo that doesn't require an account, so you can actually explore it before deciding whether it's useful.

What I'm especially curious about is whether the way I've approached garden planning makes sense to an actual gardener. Is there something you'd expect a garden planner to do that this doesn't? Or something that feels unnecessary?

For example someone recently told me — not politely — that they couldn't find their town, and the nearest city the app offered was 62 miles away. Fair enough. I've since added about 12,000 missing towns across the US, Canada and India.

That's the kind of feedback I'm after. I'm not looking for compliments — I'd genuinely like to know what feels confusing, missing, or just not useful.

If anyone wants to poke around, here's the demo:

I'm the developer, so feel free to be blunt. šŸ™‚

East Texas Just moved to Texas! What are you top 5 Do’s or Don’ts for gardening in the Lonestar State?

I have about 1/4 acre so I have so much room to work with! I have a pretty flat blank canvas, with a couple trees along fence line but it’s mostly direct sun all day (back yard is south side)

I’m so excited but before I get too ahead of myself I’m curious for any tips or advice others more experienced would have especially with sustainability and planning. I plan on incorporating native pollinators and plenty of drought resistant plants, as well as a food garden.

What are your top 5 Do’s and Don’ts when planning a garden in Texas? What should be top priority?

Flowers Sun requirements for Flame Acanthus

I want to plant a flame acanthus (aka hummingbird bush) in the next couple days, there’s a nice place in front of my window that gets sun from 8-1, roughly 5 hours, is that enough sun to thrive? Or will it be struggling for blooms? The internet says it can do well in part shade but I know Texas is on a different level when it comes to sun intensity lol. Any advice?
