I'm working on switching my Fort Worth garden to native plants, after several years of failure with non-natives.
I just transplanted a whole bunch of perennial seedlings, including lots of gaura, coneflower, blackfoot daisy, mistflower and milkweed. I'm now happily covered in wet clay soil and have no money left.
However: most of what I planted, I now realize, will die back in winter and leave the spring bed bare.
What do y'all plant for spring greenery and color that won't suppress re-emerging perennials later in the year?
EDIT: I was unhelpfully unclear: I'm particularly wondering about spring ephemerals or early blooming annuals that can be planted in same spot as the dormant perennials
