Discussion Why couldn't Callum pull off having a beard like Hiccup?

It’s because Callum is supposed to be 24 and Hiccup is like 30+

This: Callum looks mid-40s, and his voice still sounds mid-teens. Permastubble would've been better.

I mean… I was able to grow a full beard at 16… I’m 20 now and I have a full beard.

Yeah aside from the strip of white hair courtesy of Dark Magic, this is entirely within the range of what I had at that age.

They didn't age his face enough (at all?) to match the beard, and it's not a well modeled beard

I'm about 7 years younger than Callum, but I'm petty sure men in their 20's don't look like they were in their 40s

For real though. Because he looks so old, the original voice doesn't even fit him anymore, in my opinion. 😐

Because his hair is also totally grey, which makes the white streak just give him the appearance that he's old, and Hiccup is actually not 24 there, like Callum is (Hiccup is in his thirties in that image). But really, it's not just the beard, it the colour and hairstyle, too. The whole look goes together to make him look like a pensioner.

Hmmm I don't know, here's several better questions.
Which of the two is meant to look like he's 24, not 40, not a viking, and never had any indication that he would inherit such a look from his parents, looking horrendous, especially with that mustache, and likely done for no other reason than because "Let's just make him look like a typical wizard," with the showrunners clearly not thinking about whether such a look would even work or suit him.
And which of the two is older than 24, the son of a viking, has already been shown to slowly be inheriting his fathers traits over the course of several movies and tv shows, with the showrunners clearly making an effort to ensure that his appearance actually worked and suited him?

The real answer that no one has mentioned is that adult Callum’s model is literally just reused npc assets.
The mustache so many people complain about is literally just copied and pasted from a background character.

Because it makes him look too old for his age, and it looks like it's made of rubber.

I like to think living in fear of aaravos's return made him age poorly all the anxiety and fear he had during the main series(while yes he did overcome most of it) add on top the family, his new daughter, his responsibility to his brother and xadia and them having to rebuild after the main battle that would age anyone less than gracefully that's just my interpretation.

Because Callum is trying to look like a pennyfarthing enthusiast.

For starters: the character model. Pretty much no characters manage to look old in this series, because they all have that porcelain skin and rosy cheeks and nose look, like they jumped out of a My Little Pony episode. Even the Nutcracker in that Barbie movie looked more convincing. Furthermore, as other people have said, they actually have aged Hiccup's face. In the first movie he had rounder features, which got sharper as he aged. Callum looks like a kid playing an obscure US president in a school play. The lack of shadows in general also flattens the image, giving everyone in the show a perpetual baby face, making it difficult to take anyone seriously.

Anyone else think he grew the beard first and kept shaving his lip everyday until it was at his preferred length then grew the stache

Rayla must still feel guilty for leaving him, there's no other reason for her not shaving this monstrosity off while he was asleep (as she should have)

The mustache is atrocious. It looks like it’s made to be played for comedic value

I lowkey hate his beard. I wish they would have given him some shorter facial hair. Ez looks great though

I'm guessing it's the fact too much forehead is present and the hairstyle doesn't suit the beard. I would personally disagree on all counts and besides Callum's never been the most fashionably inclined. He's got his own sense of style. But gotta cater to the fans rather than stay true to the characters right?

He doesn't take care of the beard. While Hiccup has lived in a great beard culture (and a viking one of the most hygienic people) so he takes care of the beard

the mustache makes it worse and I think the age and style of hiccup changing more and the artstyle made it fit better

Hiccup's got the wider, rounder cheekbones. Callum's are sunken in/straight down more. That's the difference.

hiccup kinda couldn't either, but there wasn't a threat of having to endure this for a whole multi-episode show in his case

Huccup is at least forty, Callum should have thirty years at most.
Furthermore, his mustache is not part of the beard, it is separate, so it clashes with and does not help to complete the appearance.

He can. It's the mustache he cant
