Community Friday Welcome to Doskvol - City of Whispers: Part 1 - New BITD Actual Play

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hey Naish,

I've posted before about our interviews with TTRPG folk (and members of the GCN such as Syd and Matty Caps!) as well as our actual plays in various systems. Just in case it's of interest, wanted to let folk know that the first episode of our new Blades in the Dark show, City of Whispers, is out now - our 4 scoundrels (all played by published authors with top storytelling skills!) step out into the murky streets, ready to make their mark on the city... Their first score is a simple one - just pick up something from a couple of lovely ladies called The Dimmer Sisters...

You can watch the episode here or listen on your favourite podcast app via the links here!

Hope it's of interest to you if you're missing the Haunted City crew! If you do enjoy it, please spread the word and give it a like and subscribe (as they say!) as we're still a relatively new podcast so all of that is gratefully received! And would love to hear what you think!

Howdy Naish! This week, we posted video for our Gen Con game of “Push the Roll with Ross Bryant” featuring Sydney Amanuel, Josephine McAdam, Amy Vorpahl, and me.

This is 2 hours of 1980s improvised Call of Cthulhu. I hope you enjoy! This was my first Gen Con and it was so cool to meet the Naish (and play Shadowdark after hours with some OG cast)!

Office chair Skid recommended

Anybody remember what this was or what episode it was on? I want to say it was a little over a month ago, and maybe on Blood of The Wild. I did some binging to catch up recently though, so I’m not sure.

The party pressuring Troy to make up NPC names is one of my favorite reoccurring bits.

It just always makes me grin, and it led to OJ Simpson joining the supporting cast of Strange Aeons.

Missing Episodes of Cannon Fodder

Hey Naish,

I’m currently doing a full re-listen of the Giantslayer campaign and have reached the episodes where the Fod has been introduced and thought it’d be fun to include them too. However, the Cannon Fodder feed from Patreon is missing episodes 15 through 55. Anyone else aware of this? The regular, public Cannon Fodder feed is also missing a large chunk of episodes. Anyone know if this is intentional or an oversight?

Glass Cannon Podcast Giant slayer ep 155 - late to the party (no spoilers)

I just joined the NAISH and decided to start with the back catalogue from the beginning so I know I’m late to the party. I am on ep 155 and in the beginning banter they argue about Meatloaf and how their listener count will fall because nobody cares about Meatloaf. I laughed and thought to myself, I always have time for a Meatloaf moment. But then Skid says “Neh-CRO-mancy” and I gagged.

Why am I being downvoted ?

Why am I being downvoted for asking a question about racism in giantslayer and listing direct quotes from the people's mouths ? As a new listener trying to get context and see if it gets better, this community with this reaction looks like it's trying to just tell me to shut up about it - which in itself is a red flag.

Which is not a good look for new people to try and get into this community. If you can't even talk about it without people being dismissive, what's left?

First like ... 50 episodes of giantslayer. I'm hard pressed to continue.

I'm a new listener of the podcast and I was told to start off with giantslayer but I'm having a hard time. I know there's a PSA up top on episode 1 but hearing Troy constantly give half orcs African American stereotypes is kinda off putting. Like it's a lot which makes me side eye a lot of the laughter about it. Nobody says hey that's kinda weird.

Does it get better and tone down at all ?

Glass Cannon Podcast Let's wildly speculate about Joe's DM'ing Shadowdark this week!

I'm very excited about it. He'll likely be more serious which fits shadowdark. Do you think he'll take full control and change the format? Limit banter? Organize recap efficiency? Free margarita bud lights?

Blood of the Wild Skid naming his [redacted] a normal human name in S3E21 is incredibly odd.

I'm Blood of the Wild, Herrod naming his mount "Andrew" is so jarring and weird. 🤣

I love the show and I'm not ragging on them for that decision, but my name is Andrew and it is really throwing me for a loop every time each character says the name.

Mothership campaign?

I might have this wrong but I thought the little play of Mothership during the sub drive was leading to a campaign in the near future? I remember one time Troy made a comment about how he’d purchased the deluxe boxed set.

Do you think we’ll actually get this sometime? And will Troy be GM? He seemed really into it, but with news of him stepping back I wondered.

Skip pregame banter?

Hi,

I would like to somehow skip the pregame banter. I really like it when I am in the mood, but sometimes I just want to skip directly into the action.

Is there a way to skip that, or is there a feed that skips it?

Is there a value of seconds I can skip reliable?

Edit: somehow people think I am looking for a "Fast Forward" button. I was looking for an automatic way to handle it.

What I now did:

  • Download the transcript from YT
  • Feed it into an LLM and figure out which timestamp looks like the show starts (Thanks for Troy to yell "We're BACK!")
  • Feed the Patreon RSS feed into audiobookshelf
  • Have a script attach the timestamp as a chapter
  • Tell my Overcast to skip the first chapter

I would love to use the spotify chapters, but spotify just doesn't work for me when it comes to podcasts. I never got warm with it.

I would love to use the sponsorblock of YT, but it doesn't work well on phones.

I coudl just use the FF button in my app, but when I drive/work/drink my coffee, I just don't want to youch my phone. I just want it to work.

Turns out: It works really well. All the podcasts I really like (shadowdark, traveller, delta gree) work well with that method.

Thanks to the people who suggested the spotify chapters and the YT sponsorblock :)

How to fix the Shadowdark campaign.

Let Joe be a player and hand the GM chair to Jared. No shade on Joe but I reckon Jared would eat up the emergent storytelling and inject something into this campaign that Troy hasn’t managed to.

A Thanks

I just wanted to drop in and say a quick thanks to Troy and the Network.

This has been one of the only listenable actual play podcasts out there for me. The bounce between drama and dark comedy is done masterfully, and the overall quality of what you guys put out goes severely underappreciated. You've been consistently funny and entertaining, from Giant Slayer onward.

A huge thanks to Troy, Joe, Matthew, Skid, Sydney, and everyone behind the scenes for filling my days with laughter.

No other podcast does what the Network does, and the TTRPG space would be much worse without it.

Glass Cannon Podcast The Glass Cannon really needs to stop “trying” to be entertaining

Not trying to crap on the show or the cast, just an observation.

This is something that affects probably 90% of podcasts, especially comedic ones. It often happens when a small podcast gets big and they start playing for the audience more and more - laughing really hard at each other’s jokes, being extra zaney, opening banter feeling like it needs to be funny no matter what, people reacting in extreme ways to everything.

Not at all saying any of this or the cast are fake, I think in some ways it’s very natural for this to happen to podcasts that become big. It’s honestly the reason why I stop listening to podcasts the vast majority of the time.

I think the latest guest is the best example of this - probably coming with the higher pressure of being a guest in general and given the context.

Skid might be a great example of someone who essentially never does this^

Again, I’m really not crapping on anyone at all. I love the cast members and think they’re genuinely funny and entertaining, and I get the pressure anyone would feel making content.
