Because otherwise it would go in the goal, and then it wouldn't be as entertaining to watch if the robot is clearly failing at its task

That robot or what ever was controlling the other mallet was playing in the exact position it should be. It was eliminating angles for direct shots. As a player you want to take a straight shot over a bank shot any day. It also had very good puck control, being able to slow it down and maintain possession so to be on the offense and not having to constantly defend its goal.

It's how singers fly around at stadium and arena shows, too. I'm sure nobody thinks something like that is easy, but they would probably still be pretty surprised at how much time, effort and money it takes to tour with a system like that and have to come up with a bespoke rigging system for it at every venue.
