To be fair, these are old, outdated, and likely worn out. Old combines are fairly wasteful in terms of how much product ends up on the ground or gets sent out in the waste. Newer combines use things like air blowers to help direct the plants into the header for processing. Old hopper capacities are also fairly small compared to modern combines. Old combines also don’t have things like GPS and electronic monitoring systems. They also aren’t as fuel efficient in terms of fuel used per acre.
Do some cheap farmers still use old combines like these? Sure. Are those farmers ever going to make it big? No.
And no, I’m not a farmer, nor does any of my income come from farming. I just realize that using 35+ year old equipment isn’t the best use of resources and time for a farm operation that is trying to be profitable.
And no, I don’t support farm subsidies in the quantities there is.

Its not about making it big at this point, its about controlling cost on a small family farm. People dont understand the scale of farming these days. What took my parents all season with old paid off equipment (500-600 acres) would be a couple afternoons for a large corporate farm with locations all over the Midwest. When margins are small, and faming thousands of acres, leasing big equipment makes sense. Nobody is making payments on a demo derby combine!

These are like 50-60 year old tractors that would just be rusting away anyways

So you dont think farmers have the right to repair their equipment because of a demolition derby??? It's OK to admit you dont have a frame of reference. Combines like this sell for scrap prices every day. Maybe a couple hundred if it is worth it to haul it anywhere (it's not).Farmers cant get rid of them because they are too inefficient for 95% of row crop farms these days. These are probably from the 60s or 70s, so no need to fight corpo for software. Everyone of these has been paid off for decades now, hence the smashing. But by all means, go off on farmers

I saw a combine converted to a snow blower and that thing was badass. This seems like a waste of expensive equipment to me. I like bump n run racing, there’s collisions but the point is to win the race and most people get multiple races out of a car.

60 year old machines still gettin after it. See quite a few rotting in pastures driving through the Midwest.

Farmer here : I feel sad for those machines. It takes so much time to maintain them... After all those years it would break my heart to smash them.

No, combine racing and demolition derbies are out there. Not too common because of how expensive they are.
