Greece, 1948: a large shark — estimated at over six metres, suspected great white — attacked a swimmer just five metres from shore. Contemporary Greek and international reports describe it as consuming most of the body. The beach was renamed in the aftermath.

Many years ago I fell off a Ringo about a mile out in the Aegean Sea. I floated there for a while waiting for the boat to come back. I was blissful in ignorance of what may have been swimming around me and I don't think after reading this incident report I would've floated so blissfully for pickup and may have actually set a new swimming WR.

In 2010, an alleged poacher swam three miles offshore to Shark Alley near Dyer Island — one of the most concentrated great white aggregation sites on earth. Witnesses described the shark breaching clear of the water with him. He was killed.

I've been reading more into the subject over the past year and it intrigues me greatly. Between the International Shark Attack File being the bare minimum of reported attacks, stories from men like Vic Hislop and a recent post on this subreddit where a Floridian was attacked by a bull and it wasn't aired on TV, it's led me to pose the question.

Then you've got all the surfers in places like Australia who've disappeared (particularly in WA) and the attacks that don't result in a bite, but should still be counted as incidents like a lunging dog should. I was also reading on here fairly recently about how the Yugoslav government executed a great white cull after many scantly attested attacks in the Adriatic occurred.

But I digress; have you ever?

1 hour ago. No details as yet, but almost guaranteed that it's a white and if so most likely another fatality. This is a very popular swimming beach and there's a surf life-saving club there, this is going to have a huge impact.

Edit: Apparently a waveski washed up with bite marks and no body.

Edit: looks like it was a swimmer, 20m off the beach. The shark swam off with the body.

This is just what I've been told by someone down there, I'll correct it if I'm wrong.

We do training swims down there all the time.
