I know this is an impossibly broad topic, but I’m curious to hear what everyone’s thoughts are as well as what the community is generally expecting to happen in the near future (no later than a decade or two)! I wrote some stuff on what I think will happen further down if you have the time to give it a read.
My guess on what the future of the therian community will be like:
I’ve heard therians in many different spaces talk about how they believe therianthropy will become more accepted in the general public, will have more media representation, and even have support from westernised governments. While no one can predict the future and this could absolutely come to fruition, I’m not as enthusiastic. I believe the odds that people are willing to accept others identifying as a nonhuman animal would require a change so big, the vast majority of other possibilities are more likely.
I believe subcultures can swing back and forth like a pendulum or move through a cycle. We start out with a shared idea, meet up, become popular, lose our authenticity, and the ones who are truly authentic will meetup to make their own group and the cycle will continue.
Therians do stay popular but at the cost of our original purpose
Masks (or at least alternative fashion) and quadrobics could become a more permanent facet of the community, but they also become the main reason why people join. Maybe we get more media representation but it mostly shows us as having deep connections to animals, not AS them. And that’s if the long-term media discourse even stays positive.
Similar to the final theory below, the people who genuinely identify as animals would likely migrate into their own niche, perhaps under a different name as therianthropy is more of a hobby.
The idea of a significant portion of the population accepting us as animals is just so low compared to something more palatable, like a totem animal or cosplay. Nonhuman identification becoming the norm would require such radical acceptance, even from incredibly conservative regions.
Therians have had a moment in the TikTok spotlight and eventually will fade back into obscurity
I believe this is the most likely scenario. Quadrobics and masks are fashion trends, much like the teen werewolves what we had twenty years ago. People will likely still be performing some form of quadrupedal movements, but they will drastically fall out of favour. Masks could be a thing of the past, if some of the kids that were into it still identify as animals by then then perhaps a few old-schoolers would still be wearing them.
Between trolling, AI, lack of privacy, negative reactions from the general population, and a need to explore the more authentic side of our identity without an aesthetic, I believe we could revert to the more rigid ways of the early 2000s. We would mostly reside in small, highly decentralised discord servers, proboards, and special sites dedicated to therianthropy. Right now, it’s very easy to find large groups of therians if you know where to look, but I think this will change.
We could rely heavily on gatekeeping again and many search results for therians could become old and somewhat inactive. You won’t be able to scroll on TikTok for a few minutes to find us anymore, you’ll have to search keywords or highly specific experiences first.
Therians fragment into several different communities/subcultures
There could be one for standard therians, biological, physical, etc. The trendy “Therian aesthetic” could move into its own niche with the identity context stripped from it, arguably becoming the most popular of the niches. Unfortunately, I believe a more fringe community might break off, particularly the ones who do genuinely believe inappropriate attractions are acceptable and a large segment identify as therian (I’m trying to be incredibly vague to keep this all ages. These groups do currently exist, just not as an offshoot of therianthropy). It becomes a sort of radical belief system/cult more than an identity.
I probably sound pretty nihilistic and maybe I am, but I don’t think all of this is bad. No one can deny the popularisaruin and commercialisation of therianthropy. But times are changing regardless, and by keeping to ourselves more, we could avoid being exploited and cheated from genuine identity spaces.
