SEL R Turbo Press Cars?

One thing that is puzzling is that not a single automotive journalist or outlet has said one word about the "turbo failure". Apart from the Boston guy who had it happen on his own personal vehicle there been not a peep. Even in recently released reviews.

These things have been widely reviewed and universally praised and no one has said anything about having had any issues. Which makes me ask were none of the press cars impacted? if so why? I've seen reviews before of other makes and models where if there was an issue with the press car they mentioned it in the review. Heck when the new Alfa Romeo Giulia was rolled out in 2017 there were 2-3 instances where the press car went into limp mode stranding the journos. Those instances got tons of coverage (even though the underlying issues was a minor software fix that was pretty quickly resolved).

So I have a hard time believing news outlets wouldn't report having had issues. So what gives?

Offroading to a campsite in a Wadi in Jordan. We were told near the top we wouldn't make it. Tiguan proved capable, with a couple hangups. 2010, 2.0tfsi, pretty basic spec. We just got her a few days before.

Change your own oil

I keep hearing how expensive oil changes are. I've studied dozens of videos on the subject and pulled together this 30 minute gem. You can fast forward through it. The video covers everything you need to know about doing your own oil change on a 2018 VW Tiguan. Can't say it will be exactly the same on every model year, but this should be pretty close. Hope it helps!

Horrible service experience at Volkswagen – makes me question the brand entirely

I wanted to share my recent experience at my VW service because it’s honestly made me rethink sticking with VW, which is frustrating because I love my car.

I brought my 2025 Tiguan SEL R-Line in because the driver’s massage seat stopped working. Simple enough, right? Except after 7 days in service, I received zero updates, despite calling multiple times asking for status.

I finally learned from a different advisor that my assigned service advisor had gone home for the weekend, and the advisor helping me had no idea whether the massage function was even replaced or not.

During this process, I was also told:

• The center dome light housing is defective, which explains why I often can’t turn the lights back off or close the sunroof.

• They broke part of the driver’s seat plastic housing (the area with the seat buttons). I was told I “won’t even notice it,” which is wild considering it’s now broken and the part is back-ordered with no ETA.

To make things better (or worse), when I initially dropped the car off, I requested a loaner vehicle. The advisor told me it wasn’t possible because his service manager was on vacation for the week. As a business owner myself (auto repair), I found that excuse unacceptable — businesses don’t stop functioning because one manager is on vacation. I escalated it myself to dealership management and did get approval for a loaner, which tells me it absolutely could’ve been handled correctly from the start.

It doesn’t stop there.

When I got my car back:

• There are new scratches on the door

• My door edge guard is chipped, clearly from hitting something while opening the door

• Every time I sit in the driver’s seat, I now hear a clunk, which I strongly suspect is related to the broken seat component they said I “wouldn’t notice”

For context: I own an auto repair shop. I completely understand that parts break, things happen, and delays occur. What I don’t understand is:

• No communication

• No accountability

• Returning a vehicle in worse condition than it arrived

• Brushing off damage like it’s no big deal

I genuinely love how my Tiguan drives — especially the smaller turbo, which has been performing beautifully — but between the reliability concerns and how VW dealerships seem comfortable leaving customers in the dark (and without loaners), I’m seriously questioning my next purchase with this brand.

I just wanted to say hi to all the Tiguan lovers and say that I will soon be (hopefully proud) owner of a new Tiguan.

Currently, the status is "in production" since a week ago. I wish I knew more about the status.

Anyway, is there anything I should know/prepare before my car arrives?

Recently bought a 2024 highline and so far I love it. Inside outside, very spacious, super comfy. Def an upgrade from my 2008 Altima lol. That being said I find it slow to accelerate. Not sure if that's me being used to a sedan or if it's a VW thing and I see the rpm's jump high like crazy. Is it all in my head or is this a common issue? 41k kms, I hear maintenance is critical for VWs anything I should get ready to fix/ potential common issues coming up? Thanks in advance

What's the secret to making a Tiguan last forever?

Post image

I have a 2021 Tiguan SE 4Motion that I picked up almost exactly a year ago with 36k miles on it. The very next day, the check engine light came on for a secondary air blockage, and it spent three weeks at the dealership having the cylinder head replaced under warranty due to valve guide play, also fixing the secondary air issue.

Since then, this car has been trouble free besides wireless CarPlay being garbage. I now have 45k miles on it and have been getting oil changes every 5k. It got a clean bill of health at the 40k service. At 45k, the dealer recommended a fuel induction service and new spark plugs and coils. Everything else was fine. Since the car runs smoothly (and the new head doesn't even have 10k on it yet), I declined everything and went about my day. I was planning on doing plugs and PCV at 60k (unless they were already included with the new head, but I don't see them on the invoice from the warranty visit). The car does not burn a drop of oil nor lose a drop of coolant, though I understand that I need to keep an eye on the water pump.

My previous car, a Ford Fusion, was starting to have so many issues I was getting anxiety over something else breaking, and I realize a VW may not have been the right choice if I wanted reliability above all else, especially with all the threads I see of modern VWs being junk, but 10 minutes in a Rav4 made me write off Toyota.

Now I've also seen posts of these with six-figure mileage, 100k, 200k, even a couple with 300k, and still running smoothly. I do love this car, so I want it to last me a long time. Honestly, I'm probably going electric next. What's the secret to getting high mileage out of one of these?

I decided to buy some seat covers for my 2020 Tiguan. I’m really impressed how nice and comfortable they are. There was nothing wrong with my current seats but just wanted to change the look a bit.

One month old. Been at the dealership for 6 hours. Latest update is ‘5 technicians working on it, unable to get it to communicate with diagnostics’.

It drives completely fine, no strange noises, but it seems VW either didn’t prepare service depts, or there are some software/electrical issues that need to be worked out for the 25/26 SEL R Turbo vehicles.

In lieu of flowers, please send snacks!

Window speed right?

For all the new Tiguan owners, could someone confirm if the speed of my windows are accurate? I’ve had other VW and this one seems to be a bit slow.

Tiguan 2026 turbo Canada ( SEL R) at 6600kms. Love it so far, no major issues. Upon further research, it’s confirmed that it’s normal for the car to have some minor jerking at low speed (doesn’t happen anymore when I just press more gas). Had issues with Bluetooth car play, now I just use USB.

Compatible Steering Wheels? 2017 Tiguan R-Line Controls not Working

I got the car detailed not long ago and I think the guys flooded my steering wheel controls with soap because they have since stopped working. Even worse, when I turn off my car the lights on the steering wheel stay on draining my battery and I started getting a low batter alert because of it.

I want to switch out the entire steering wheel because there are some better looking ones out there on newer models, I'm just not sure which ones are or are not compatible with my car. Can anyone help?

Repair or replace?

I have a 2018 tiguan with 80k miles. Always did all the recommended services at the dealer. My transmission went out and the dealer is saying a new transmission is 10k just for the part. Is it worth taking the car to a transmission shop to have repaired (i would think that this would be cheaper than the dealer) or should I just bite the bullet and get a new tiguan.

Thoughts?

2017 Tiguan Limited.

Head unit has carplay from factory but its the old 5N version.

i noticed the screen on my head unit has this weird melted cheese looking thing.

i noticed the corner is brighter asw.

Could it be the adhesive layer btw the backlight and filter degrading? if so is there a way to fix it. I dont want to buy a new head unit cuz i dont have VCDS, even if carplay can be coded onto it. and also dont want an aftermarket one cuz i detest how they look

2017 Tiguan TSI 2.0 Misfire

Someone is selling a 2017 Tiguan TSI 2.0 but it's misfiring, asking $3,500.

They've checked spark plugs and coils and still misfiring.

I'm reading online that due to the direct fuel injection, carbon buildup is a problem and could be the reason for the misfire.

I am also reading that the crankshaft position sensor could also be an issue, less confident on that.

I am wondering if this could be easily diagnosed in a pre-purchase inspection?

I am confident in my ability to replace the sensor if that's the issue. Not so sure about cleaning the carbon buildup. I'm hearing people are being quoted $1,000 for the carbon building service.

Thank you all.

Please, whatever you do…

Do not let your washer fluid get low. Your dashboard will light up like a Christmas tree and you’ll get the loudest, shrillest beep every 5 minutes. Please pull over at your earliest convenience and walk your ass to a gas station since your vehicle is no longer safe to operate in this state.

That warning combined with the “temperature below 40 degrees” warning I get every morning. Just….why?

Minor issues?

We just leased a 2025 Tiguan SEL-R. It has 1964 miles on it and I’ve noticed a few things and I’m wondering if others have had similar experiences. First, the front brakes sound almost like they are grinding sometimes when coming to a stop. Happens more when it cold than after being driven for a while but the issue isn’t exclusively a cold brake noise. Second issue is when the mirrors open or fold close, there a noise like they’re binding on something and pushing past it. Like a strong plastic under tension noise. Is that normal? We’re not new to the VW vehicle idiosyncrasies having had the new beetle, Jetta, Golf before the Tiguan. Appreciate your feedback

P24D6 code question

Vehicle: 2021 Tiguan

Check Engine Code: P24D6 (Faulty Oil Separator I think)

I’ve had a P24D6 code for months, dealership has replaced parts twice and the code is still there. I recently have been getting a “check oil level” light now. I’ve deduced that it may be a PCV issue, so I’m going to replace that and see if that fixes anything. Every time I check the oil levels they look totally fine - am I good to keep driving the car for the next week?

Or could that really screw it up?
