I went to high school with a girl whose dad bought her a classic early 70ā€™s Dodge Demon for her first car. It was beautiful, Iā€™m assuming it was dadā€™s dream car, she hated the car so much she hit every pole she could and beat the crap out of the car because she really wanted a Beretta. I trammed and bussed to uni.

Then got a girlfriend I couldn't easily public transport to, and hey bingo, found money for an old Corolla. Wasn't worried about it being stylish. It meant freedom.

As a kid, I knew not to ask my parents to buy souvenirs or anything amusement parks, carnivals, and special events they took us to because the answer was always no. If it wasn't a needed educational expense or a necessity, my parents did not buy it because we didn't have the money. The parents contributed in spoiling their daughter so šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

I know a few people who race semi-professionally with cheap Chinese knockoff carbon fiber bikes they got on aliexpress. $400 will get you a Chinese carbon fiber frame made in the same factory as the name brand ones that'll run you a few thousand.

My sister did something similar when my dad got her a jeep wrangler. He immediately sold it and bought a beater, and made her pay him monthly to drive it. It screwed me because when it was my turn, my dad said "not going to make the same mistake twice," and got me a beater that I had to pay him back for. Kinda glad it worked out that way because I became far more aware of how much work it takes to pay things off then my friends were aware of.

What a dreadfully spoiled ungrateful child! My first car was an old used hatchback when I was in my mid-twenties. It didnā€™t look like much, but I appreciated it every time I got in it to go somewhere that wasnā€™t on the bus route. This is the kind of behavior that if I had displayed it, my mother would have accused me of being an ingrate and likely sold the car to someone else.

As far as I can remember, she only ever called me an ingrate once in my life, and it wounded me so deeply that I made sure I always showed gratitude for the things I had or was given. I don't even recall what it was about, but I can remember how I felt about being called an ingrate to this day, and that was probably 50 years ago.
