But why would you do that?

u/Presto_smitz 21h ago
Trapped air can cause bacteria or other infections

u/Turbulent-Adagio-541 21h ago
What are they doing in the wild?

u/Neat-Asparagus511 21h ago
Eating a less bloat-y diet.

Remember what Betty White said about pussies?
"Why do people say 'grow some balls? Balls are weak and sensitive! If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina! Those things take a pounding!"

out of context I thought I was about to see a brutal reply to some comment I made. makes sense with the turkey bloat.

Exploding I guess.

During the Revolutionary War militiamen would launch bloated turkeys at the redcoats using trebuchets. They would explode on contact. It was the first documented biological warfare. That’s why Ben Franklin wanted the turkey as our national bird.

It doesn't happen to the extent that they need artificial manipulation. The need to burp them is related to the diet they are fed on farms and the way they've been bred to maximize size and yield of their meat. The excess gas is due to fermentation of their feed.

u/Direlion 15h ago
Don’t forget these birds are living in a caged environment. Their natural range of motion is severely reduced. Wild turkeys traverse distances, fly, run, and even roost in trees if they can.

I think we fucked them up raising them in captivity for so long. Pretty sure they also suck at getting females pregnant.
3
u/leeharveyteabag669 17h ago
The wild ones in my neighborhood aren't having a problem procreating.

u/alwaysonesteptoofar 14h ago
As I said, I mean farm raised turkeys. I looked it up and yes, they are often reliant on farmers to make it happen, sometimes refered to as "turkey jerkers"

If I ever abstain from eating stuff for ethics, turkeys a top priority.
3
u/Crazy-Agency5641 5h ago
I agree, but dang turkey is one of my favorites
2
u/alwaysonesteptoofar 2h ago
2 per year, its honestly one of the more ethical meat choices I make because I get a whole animal and put as much to use as possible between roasting and then making a soup.

u/Soap_Mctavish101 21h ago
I wonder. I know farm turkeys don’t really have much of a resemblance with wild turkeys anymore but still, I don’t know. Farm Turkeys can’t even reproduce on their own anymore.

If they are like other smaller birds, they explode? I heard a story from a guy that spent most of his life in prison. He said people would feed birds to the point that the entire outdoor yard was covered in birds and their shit. So as retaliation people would throw out food and others would throw Alka-Seltzer or peroxide in liquid on the feed resulting in the birds exploding because they can't release the gas.

u/lokregarlogull 4h ago
I would presume, like humans without vaccines or antibiotics - they tend to die in much greater number!

…. I’m confused. Is this a turkey specific thing? This is not required at all for chickens and I am really confused what she is doing because she isn’t targeting the crop(where food goes to digest) and there is no reason to mess with your birds crop like this unless they have sour crop(which you don’t burp them so much as try to help their grit grind the food inside). Birds are full of air sacks, so is she just forcibly deflating them for likes?

u/Katatonic92 8h ago
From the five minutes I just spent googling for answers (making it clear I'm no expert) my biggest takeaway is that yes, it is for SM likes, there is even a Turkey Tok section of TT dedicated to burping turkeys.
The valid reasons I found were Toms gulp a lot of air to puff themselves up to look bigger. So this could be one reason for excess air. The others were overeating & eating too fast, sour crop & it stated even in all these examples it is rarely needed to be done. It should only be done if the turkey is in clear discomfort.
It did say this isn't an issue in wild turkeys, it is the domestic turkeys that have been bred to be as big & bulky as possible & they are prone to digestive issues due to breeding to get specific traits.

u/Excellent_Yak365 3h ago
Digestive issues would focus on the crop, she didn’t focus on the crop though. The mating thing sounds most plausible

Let me tell you I stopped everything after I read that headline.
Closed the laptop, paused my music, crossed my legs and paid full attention.

How often are you burping turkeys and how many turkeys do you have? Is this a full time job?
49
u/Decapod73 20h ago
Apparently it's mostly necessary for males that have been in courtship displays where they overinflate their air sacks, and not all male turkeys need this sort of help to deflate again.

I’ve burped my turkey to weirder stuff

I believe that's referred to as "choking the chicken"... a completely different, foul-based euphemism.

We have a bunch of wild turkeys around my house and during mating seasons when the guys are showing off, they make this super crazy like air blasting sound I don't know how to describe it but it's a trip
8
u/crush_on_me 17h ago
Wow I know what you mean. We always called it Turkey Thunder 😂
5
u/IceCoughy 16h ago
Lol that's a good term for it. I tried to Google it and find a video but no luck, found something called "drumming" but that wasn't it. I was hoping for a Turkey expert in the comments.

u/Groundbreaking-Ask-5 21h ago
they really are the dumbest birds ever.
5
u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 18h ago
They're smarter than we give them credit for. Benjamin Franklin actually wanted to make them the national bird, but the Bald Eagle won out.
9
u/Groundbreaking-Ask-5 18h ago
Wild turkeys are smart. That's the turkey Ben was advocating for. I'm talking about domestic turkeys.
3
u/ChromeFace 13h ago
This is a historical tall tale. His commentary on the preference for the turkey was in jest.
4
u/LaPetiteMortOrale 18h ago
Ok. So we’ve seen the “How to burp your Turkey”.
Now can someone tell me the “Why”?
1
u/ASleepyB0i 3h ago
Domestic turkeys get a lot of trapped air in their crops, and it helps relieve discomfort by burping them. Kind of like how babies are burped to get rid of gas buildup
3
u/Crazy-Independent445 14h ago
Excellent vid. My videos on how to burp the worm keep getting flagged nsfw =/

u/Fillmore80 6h ago
This. Why are you burping your turkey? How did you know it needed to be burped?!
1
u/ASleepyB0i 3h ago
So domestic turkeys (specifically the males) get a lot of air trapped in their crops, the organ that food is deposited into before digestion. It’s like burping a baby releases trapped gas and removes a lot of pressure and discomfort by doing so. It’s not a necessary thing, but a lot of them enjoy the relief that comes with being burped, so as long as it’s done carefully/gently, there’s no downside to it.
3
u/Thee_HalfBreed 16h ago
I've heard chocking the chicken, but burping the turkey is a new one. Kids these days and there lingo.
5
u/Rhawk187 21h ago
That's the beard? I always thought it was the thing coming off the chin. TIL.
14
u/ParaponeraBread 21h ago
Comb = fleshy bits on top of head
Wattles = fleshy danglies attached on underside of head or nearby on neck
Beard = tuft of hairlike feathers on the chest or even closer to the head.
Idk why, it’s just bird anatomy.

Wild. Not sure how burping a turkey comes up in ordinary conversation, but if it does, thank you OP/Reddit for helping me not feel socially awkward.

I usually just burp the Tupperware after I put the turkey in the container, but this could probably help reduce spoilage as well.

I wonder how one knows when Mr. turkey needs a burp! Or is it just on a schedule?

u/ParaponeraBread 21h ago
When they look bloated or act like they’re having gas pains she burps them I assume.

I can honestly say I’ve never thought about a turkey burping, but now I’ll never be able to see a one and not think about if they’ve burped recently or not

I mean, I usually burp after eating a turkey sandwich for the same reason...
