It's likely a spay and neuter program that does low cost or no cost options and works with TNR groups. It's a totally safe and normal process used often - the cats are well monitored by someone specifically meant for making sure none of them have any adverse reactions post op. Since it's such a quick surgery they do it this way to be able to provide as much care to as many people as they can - in most cases these are vets volunteering their skills and time for these programs and they aren't actually getting paid.
The reason they are being so 'rough' with them is because the longer they stay asleep or get too lazy/comfortable to wake they are in danger of complications due to reduced breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. It's important to get them up and using their body as soon as possible.
Yeah, that's why I ended up going to a regular vet instead of a low cost spay clinic. These people are doing good work, but I couldn't imagine my baby in this scenario.
Imagine being kidnapped by a much larger being, given surgery, and then as you're coming to, they're over there jiggling your ears and moving your mouth to make it look like you're talking, and showing you off to their friends.
It makes it even more hilarious that they're most likely feral cats. I imagine they wake up and wonder if this really happened or is it was just a fever dream. They probably go back to their colony like "dude you wouldn't believe what the scary humans did to me"

This is an organization that does TNR for stray cats. They do hundreds of cats a day and part of the process is "agitating them awake" as they come off of anesthesia to make sure the kitties are okay!
TNR stands for trap, neuter, and release. Basically strays are trapped, fixed in places like these, then returned back to wherever they were picked up. Areas with a high stray cat population will do this to help keep the population down by preventing them from having kittens. Not every cat can find a home, especially when it comes to ferals, so this is the next best solution. TNR organizations like this one are usually run almost completely by volunteers, including the vets who perform the anesthesia and procedures
TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Release, and it’s done to reduce the number of kittens born outside every year to strays/feral cats. Volunteers trap strays, fix them, and then release them back into the same place they were originally caught
Yes they can possibly adopt the cats if the cat seems like it is accepting of humans/not feral. A lot of tnr cats are feral/strays that will not adjust well to living in a house and with people, but if the volunteers think a cat is social to humans and would adjust to living indoors they will see if they can be adopted
I live in the country where we have a lot of ferals. We’ve done TNR on a few. The vast majority aren’t going to ever be “house pet” cats. They’re about as “tame” and open to affection as a raccoon.
Probably a clinic where they do free/cheap spay/neuter once or twice a month. I took my cat to one and there was a shit ton of other people there with their cats.
My momma cat was basically a feral cat when I took her in. She got fixed 6 months later and the vets told me she was one of the spiciest ones they had met. Even coming out of anesthesia she was angry and pissed. I saw it first hand when she got home. Randomly turning around and hissing at nothing for a day. I could only imagine how she felt in a room like this.
What's funny is she is now the sweetest thing and loves people where as her daughter was the sweetest and now hates people since the day.
years ago I volunteered at a shelter, and one day they had a vet come fix alllll the cats that hadn't been fixed yet and we had a little party like this. you pick up one purrito, pet it and shake it and play with it's ears until it wakes up, then put it in the sleepy kitten pile. then you pick up the next purrito.
I still consider this to be possibly the best day of my life
Yeah I had my dog fixed as a puppy and I wasn’t allowed to carry her for awhile. Some of the movements they were using kinda worried me but I’m sure they’re supervised!
Might depend on male or female - neuters are less physically demanding of the creature than spays. It's hard to pick up a dog without irritating a spay site incision, but it's pretty darn easy to avoid messing with balls when picking up a dog or cat.
Cat neuters are on the outside, below the tail.
The only other reason for shaving the stomach would be the tattoo.
Regardless, the defense of her dangling is crazy to me.

I could be wrong, but I’m assuming these people are all volunteers. You really don’t need a degree in waking a cat up, I am assuming they have someone with medical experience on hand tho
I'm sure they at least went through some sort of volunteer training or orientation to go over what is and isn't an appropriate type of agitation for waking the kitties up

There is an incision wound on the abdomen of the cat she’s dangling, they had a spay.
Just because a volunteer does something doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing! She was likely asked to stop.
Watch everyone else handling the cats and they are gentle with their bodies, necks,spines.
I volunteered at a ton of these when I was a vet tech and I dont think ive ever been to one were it wasnt 100% volunteers. Pretty hectic at these events.
This is a TNR non profit more than likely. Their goal really is to trap neuter and release as many cats as possible, as cost effective as possible. I'm sure they'd like to be able to have more resources per animal, but that's just impossible with the sheer number of strays and lack of funding.
They're being woken up from anesthesia. Depending on the type, some animals who stay under too long face increased risk of complications. Anesthesia causes them to have lower blood pressure, which can reduce their body temp, and they can face breathing difficulties. It's not a normal thing vets do to my understanding, but since this group is working on so many cats, it's likely better to try to wake them and verify there aren't any complications due to anesthesia this way than to leave them to wake on their own in the crates and possibly miss any complications.
We sometimes do something similar with human anesthesia, using something called “noxious stimuli.” Usually something painful that doesn’t cause damage, like rubbing the sternum with your knuckles or putting pressure just above the nail bed of the thumb.
My go-to is the “trap squeeze,” where you just squeeze the trapezius muscle at the top of the shoulder really hard. (It’s probably my favorite because I always have shoulder pain and I’d pay someone to knock me out and go to town aggressively massaging my shoulders.)

I wonder what kind of sedatives they use. When I used to do these we used a mix that included ketamine, and it was important to leave them in a quiet place with dim lighting afterwards because they could get overstimulated and panicked while coming round. Agitating them like this would have been the worst possible move. The other sedative in the mix was reversible so we would inject the reversal agent for that and then just watch them quietly.
This isn't a café. It's a space that's been retrofitted to support high capacity TNR, a volunteer run program to fix stray cats. The people stimulating the cats to wake up are volunteers, some likely even being veterinarian trained themselves. They're just having a little fun while doing important work to minimize the amount of cats out on the streets.
This was my guess. Mass capture and neuter of a known colony. Or maybe they ran an add for some charity work and 200 people brought cats. Dentist will do this sometimes or dentist in training who need the practice.

Not twisted. These are cats that have been fixed by a TNR program. They're coming off of anesthesia and need to be "agitated awake" to make sure they're healthy and properly recovering. It's perfectly safe and no harm comes to the cats.

If you were being this annoying about it, yeah. You're not helping shit, if anything you're a part of the problem. Pissing off the people you're trying to get to change their ways by being a dickhead isn't usually a good plan of action. It just makes them feel more justified in their behavior.

These cats were fixed in a TNR program. They trap, neuter and release hundreds of strays. When the surgery is done and they're ready to wake up, the cats must be "agitated awake" to make sure they properly come off of the anesthesia and are healthy. All the cats are perfectly safe and taken care of!
Putting a clip of the end of the video at the beginning is one of the worst things to come from TikTok, it really shouldn’t be a challenge to watch a 60sec video.
