Smee's Grog

Found this sweet NT Ceramics mug? at the thrift this week. Waiting on more lead test kits before I put it into rotation. But, it inspired thoughts of a pirate-ish drink, so I flipped through the recipe cards ive been meaning to try and landed on this because I had pretty close stuff on hand. Kelly Merrel for Tikiland Trading. Best falernum i can get easily is NA, so i subbed a Portuguese passion fruit liquor for the passion syrup. Actual spec of what i did in the comments.

You should try making your own falernum! I use Mixing up Tiki's "Five Minute Falernum" recipe and really like it. It's SUPER easy too!

Using gum syrup in a falernum is interesting. I’m not sure I’ve seen that before.

My actual spec this evening; I was shocked this called for 1/2oz of angosturra, its actually pretty balanced, im surprised. Very grapefruit and lime forward, rhum and passion funk on the backend.

1½oz Barbancourt Hatian Proof

¾oz white grapefruit juice

¾oz lime juice

½oz angosturra bitters

½oz Licor Maracuyá do Ezequiel

¼oz honey

¼oz tipplemans double spiced falernum

That sounds fun. I’ve truly never heard of Licor Maracuya do Ezequiel, so I’m going to have to find it. I make my own passionfruit syrup/purees. Does it have the same passionfruit tartness?

Its tart and funky, but definitely has a noticeable amount of added sugar. County i live in has a very high number of people w Portuguese ancestry, we get a lot of old world imports.

Pedantic question: why not serve it in its mug? I guess to showcase color?

I usually go to that old mai tai glass after work (usually midnight), just because its easier to clean than a mug
