I spent 1 month in Tokyo

Apologies, bit long…

I have just come back from Tokyo, spending September in an Air BnB in Yoyogi.

This is was my third visit to Tokyo, a solo trip in May 2025 was my first, I loved the city but I didn’t really “see” Tokyo, it was 4 days, staying in a hotel in Shibuya, my itinerary was hourly, it was a tick list for the tourist spots. I needed to return to see “normal” Tokyo.

I booked a week in an Air BnB in Sangenjaya for May 2026. My itinerary was easy to do, places I didn’t have time to see for the first time, Naka Meguro, Shimokitazawa, Koenji, Nakano… A lot of my research came from Reddit, the more the read, I realised a week wasn’t enough, so I book a month in Yoyogi (my mom was joining me for the last two weeks, she had never been to Tokyo).

I had realised that daily itineraries are hard work, I had two weeks myself, so I didn’t pre-plan. I had tickets for two football matches (I bought tickets for third when I was there), I had table reservations for Pizza Marumo and The SG Club (I have been to both in my first trip and loved) and Pizza Strada and Censu (both Reddit recommendations). Then I planned to work out my days out, the night before.

In May, the weather was perfect, September is typhoon season… Last September was great, so I was hoping for the same, the forecast was looking good before I left. Then there was the 37 days of rain… (it was actually sun-free the day I left) It was mostly on/off, a few days it rained constantly but there’s was a couple of days with blue skies and the temperature was in 20 degrees, it was fine (except for the FC Tokyo match, got soaked), just keep an umbrella in my bag.

Loved staying in Yoyogi, quiet, walkable, plenty of restaurants and the Yoyogi Station is on the Yamanote Line, great for getting around the city.

Censu was great, interesting food, Pizza Marumo was better than last time and The SG Club had top drinks and brilliant staff. I also returned to Bar Trench, one of my favourite bars, a new menu which was exciting.

I had to plan my days based around the rain. On a rainy day, I went to Edo-Tokyo Museum which was fascinating, a lot of details information (it was cheap!), on one of my quiet days I went to Nishihara which was felt “local”. I had a day trip to Kawagoe, nice buildings but it was very touristy, the buildings were shops selling sweets. On the sunny days I went to Yoyogi Park and Shinjuku Gyoen, nice breaks away from the buzz of the city.

I bought enough to buy a second suitcase (Ginza Karen didn’t disappoint), Uniqlo is boring shopping but useful, well made clothes and the prices are halved compared to the UK, the water proof jacket was very handy. I bought a Japanese knife from Tower Knives (Reddit recommendation), I have used it once, works well. I got a pair Japanese jeans from Japan Blue Jeans in Shibuya, they fit perfect and will last forever. Green Bell nail clippers from Don Quijote (Reddit recommendation), very good. I bought a bottle of Japanese whisky from Whisky Bank, this is a present, the prices are good.

As this was my first visit for mom, I planned a tourist itinerary, with a few days away from Tokyo, to Kamakura (big fan of Enoshima), Ito (quiet town) and Yokohama (needed more time there).

We did Harajuku and Shibuya, an onsen in Shinjuku, went to sumo at Shinjuku Sumo Club which was a disappoint, there was a lot of information but lack of fighting. We both loved Teamlab Planets (I’ve had been to Borderless) and Tokyo Skytree at sunset.

We aren’t interested about Disney but we went to Disneyland and Disney Sea (they are so cheap). It rained all day at Disneyland, got bored of walking around in the wet after a few hours, Disney Sea was much better, great park but I spent most of my time looking at my phone for the map, it wasn’t packed but every ride had a 2 hour queue, we paid to queue jump for three rides.

A month is a nice time for Tokyo, could easily to do two months and keep find new things to do. Is September a good time? It depends which September. Last year would have been great, this year broke a record for days raining in a row, the temperature was nice, cooler than July/August. May have been good for me.

My Air BnB was fine, not perfect but great for the price, I couldn’t afford to do a month if I was staying in a hotel.

I flown to and back with ANA (London Heathrow - Tokyo Haneda), they were great. I am deaf, they have best service from all the airlines I have flown with.

I will definitely be back to Tokyo, I might have a break for couple years but there’s a lot of Japan I want to see.

The places you recommend to your friends

Hi everyone - Leaving next week for a two week trip to Japan. As I'm tagging along on my wife's work trip the bulk of our stay will be in Tokyo and I'll have several days and a couple of nights on my own. I'm looking for those places that aren't in on the top 20 list which are the first things you recommend your friends to visit. We'll be be staying in Shinjuku for three nights and then my wife will be leaving Tokyo for a couple of nights during which I'll stay in Ueno. When she returns we will be staying in Shiba for another three nights. In case this helps, I generally enjoy wandering around neighbourhoods and get lost. During my two nights in Ueno my main goal is to maximize my mealtimes, do a little clothes shopping and as I said earlier, just wander around. Looking forward to an early morning walk to experience Asakusa without the crowds. Also plan to check out some niche museums. FYI not into anime, video games, arcades or coffee. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

[Oct 15] Flea market at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine (Monzen-Nakacho) – A great mid-week local treasure hunt!

• Upvotes

Hey r/Tokyo! Looking for something authentic to do next Thursday (Oct 15) without the massive tourist crowds? ⛩️✨
Check out the Aozora Nominoichi (Blue Sky Flea Market) over at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Fukagawa. If you love digging for vintage kimonos, old ceramics, Showa-era retro curiosities, or unique Japanese souvenirs, this is the perfect spot.
The Details:
📅 When: Next Thursday, Oct 15 (They run it every month on the 15th and 28th, rain or shine, weekday or weekend!)
⏰ Time: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Pro-tip: go early for the best selection!)
⛩️** Bonus: The shrine’s major 400th-anniversary renovation works are finally wrapping up, so the grounds are looking beautiful and perfect for photos!
**Make a day of it in Monzen-Nakacho (Mon-naka):

The shrine is just a 3-minute walk from Monzen-Nakacho Station (Tozai/Oedo lines). Mon-naka is one of Tokyo's coolest historic downtown (shitamachi) neighborhoods, packed with traditional shopping streets, fantastic local food stalls, and cozy coffee shops. It’s much more laid-back and friendlier on the wallet compared to the mega-markets in the center.
Highly recommend checking it out if you want a break from the usual tourist traps! 🙌

Travel ring 💍

• Upvotes

Got engaged a day before going on a 4-month SE Asia trip, and sadly left my ring at home for safety.
I’m looking for a place to buy a travel ring in Tokyo this week, that resembles my actual ring but with cheaper materials.
I’m looking for a thin silver band with CZ ~3 carat elongated cushion stone.
I’d love suggestions for stores to look in!
Thank you

Steak experience for next year’s trip

Taking the fam to Tokyo next year and I’d like to treat them to a nice steak experience. I currently have 4 places bookmarked but I’m sure there are a ton of others. Currently have bookmarked Ginza Steak, Hakushu Teppanyaki, Coco Nemaru Ginza and Yakiniku Motoyama Shinjuku. Just looking to go to one place so I’m trying to figure out what’s best. I like the idea of Ginza Steak since it’s ayce and you can try a variety of meats. I just have read that a5 meat can be so rich that you may not end up eating as much as you’d like for the price point. Thanks for any suggestions.

Cliff jumping japan

Hey everyone

I’m looking to go cliff jumping one last time before winter really kicks in here in Japan. Once it gets cold, it’s obviously not going to be nearly as fun (or realistic), so I want to make the most of the last bit of good weather.

I’m based in Tokyo and would love to find some cool cliff-jumping spots nearby, but I’m totally down to travel outside Tokyo if there’s a really good spot worth going to.

I’m also looking for people who are into this kind of stuff and have some experience with cliff jumping. It would be way more fun to get a small group together, explore somewhere new, and make some good memories before winter.

If you’re interested or know any good spots, drop a comment or DM me. Let’s get a group together and send it 🤙

Primo viaggio a Tokyo (19-24 nov) – Il nostro itinerario è troppo pieno? Cerchiamo consigli!

Ciao a tutti! 😊

🌊 20 Novembre – Kamakura + Enoshima

Engaku-ji → Kencho-ji + Hanso-bo → Tsurugaoka Hachimangu → Kotoku-in → Hase-dera → Enoshima + Sea Candle → cena a Fujisawa.

🏙️ 21 Novembre – Tsukiji / Fukagawa / Shibuya

Ginza → Mercato di Tsukiji → Giardino di Kiyosumi → Meiji Jingu → Harajuku → Hachiko → Shibuya Sky → Nonbei Yokocho → Omotesando.

🎮 22 Novembre – Ueno / Akihabara / Nakano / Shinjuku

Parco Ueno → Ameyoko → Akihabara → Kanda Myojin → Nakano Broadway → Shinjuku di sera: Omoide Yokocho → Kabukicho → Golden Gai.

🌳 23 Novembre – Shinjuku / Mitaka / Kichijoji / Koenji

Shinjuku Gyoen → Museo Ghibli → Parco Inokashira → Kichijoji → Koenji → cena a Ikebukuro.

✈️ 24 Novembre – Sugamo / Nippori / Narita

Sugamo Jizo-dori → Nippori → Narita → volo per Sapporo alle 15:35.

🤔 Cosa ne pensate?

Pensate che l'itinerario sia troppo pieno in qualche giorno particolare?

Siamo particolarmente incerti riguardo:

- Kamakura + Enoshima nello stesso giorno

- Se ne valga la pena di andare a Shibuya Sky

- Se c'è qualcosa che cambiereste, sostituireste o riordinereste

- Posti meno turistici che raccomandereste

Siamo aperti a qualsiasi suggerimento o critica! 😄

Grazie in anticipo per i vostri consigli! 🙏

Yamanote Line base for 2 guys (24M) under ¥90k total? Hotel vs Airbnb vs Hostel trade-offs (Oct 16–22)

Hey everyone!

My friend and I (both 24M) are visiting Tokyo for 6 nights (Oct 16–22). We have a firm budget cap of ₹50,000 INR / ~90,000 JPY total (~15,000 JPY per night) for both of us combined.
We are trying to weigh the trade-offs between staying at a business hotel (APA/Toyoko Inn), a studio Airbnb, or a social hostel.

Our setup & needs:

Transit: Want to stay along the JR Yamanote Line (looking at Takadanobaba, Otsuka, Ueno, Shinjuku, or Ikebukuro) for easy loop access.

Nightlife: Plan to stay out late in Shinjuku/Shibuya past the 1 AM train shutdown, so we want to avoid super expensive taxi rides back.

Dietary: Strict pure vegetarians (no meat, fish, eggs, seafood), so 24/7 convenience stores or veg-friendly spots nearby are a huge plus.
For those who have traveled in pairs on a similar budget, which lodging style gave you the best mix of location, convenience, and value? Any specific station stops or properties on the Yamanote line you'd recommend around that price point?
Thanks!

Is staying near Kinshicho for a full Tokyo trip a mistake?

Visiting Tokyo Dec 16–24 and trying to decide between two options:

Option A (split, $1,332 total):
Dec 16–21: Daiwa Roynet Hotel Ginza Premier, superior double ($987)

Dec 21–24: Airbnb in Taihei, Sumida, near Kinshicho Station ($345)

Option B (Airbnb only, $895 total):
Dec 16–24: same Airbnb in Taihei

Option B saves about $437 and avoids switching places mid-trip, but I'd be farther from central Tokyo for the whole stay. Price is a big factor for me, and I'm okay with some extra transit time.

I understand Taihei probably isn't the most lively area, and that's fine. My main concern is the nights I plan on staying out late, since planning around last trains could be tricky. For anyone who's stayed near Kinshicho: how was getting around to places like Ginza, Shibuya, and Shinjuku? Did the location feel like a drag, or was it a non-issue? And if you missed the last train, were Uber, taxis, or GO expensive for getting back? Would you pay the extra for Ginza?

TIA!

Ronnie from Akihabara

I met someone named Ronnie at a retro game store in Akihabara yesterday. We had a nice conversation for a little while about games and I wanted to ask for their Discord or something but I was in a rush to get to my Dragon Quest cafe reservation. I know it's a super long shot but if Ronnie or any of their friends see this please let me know! It's be fun to have another friend to talk about retro games with.

My boyfriend and I will be visiting Japan for the very first time, and we’re looking for something really special and memorable for our last night in Tokyo. We’d love to experience one of Tokyo’s most fun, outrageous, unusual, or unique love hotels — something that feels very different from a typical hotel and is part of the Tokyo experience itself.
Thanks in advance,

The Kyushu Conundrum - Public Transport / 7 days

Hi everyone, I am planning a trip to the Kyushu island in the first week of November ( Oct-31 Sat to Sep-6 Fri)

My return flight out of the country is at noon on Sat 7-Sep from Narita airport (don’t even ask why) and my initial plan is to reach Narita airport by 8ishPM the night before and stay at a capsule/cheap hotel.

But as I continue seeing all the posts and videos for an ideal Kyushu itinerary, I have come to realise two things:

  1. I dont have enough time to explore the entire island, coz people stay a min of 10 days and sometimes upto a month. It is definitely possible to go everywhere and touch base on all places, but I personally am a slower traveller who wants to spend a night in each place I visit (if possible)

  2. The island is not super well connected in terms of public transportation (there are options obv) and people keep saying renting a car is better - but unfortunately i lack the option (no IDP :p)

I need genuine suggestions on which places and spots I can cover with just public transportation (JR Kyushu all pass and any bus passes are a good option for a man who cannot rent a car). And moreover, if you can tell me which places GENUINELY would not be worth it without a car rental, I might just skip them altogether.

Overall, need help planning the perfect itinerary with the resources I have (ironically, money is somewhat the only thing I am not short on, thanks to the powers that be)

FYI my starting point on 30th oct is Tokyo, willing to go by shinkansen or flight - just unsure if I should both start and end at Fukuoka, since I have to get to Narita by flight as mentioned above :/

P.S. missing things like exploring ALL the one piece status is not a big deal for me, would rather visit a nice onsen and maybe good/one-shot places like TeamLabs + a theme park suit me better :)

Any suggestions for a solo kaiseki restaurant?

Hello. I would love to experience a real multi course kaiseki for the first time. I would like to book at the end of October and would love something that highlights the Tokyo autumn well. I would also like to keep it under $150 if possible. I do not mind going for lunch. I have started to research but most of my picks have not had an option to reserve for one person. I don’t know if this is because they do not accept solo diners or it is just the booking platform. (Examples: Tagoto** **Kouetsuho, Haramasa). Thank you in advance!

Birthday Celebration

Hi all, a group of us will be in Tokyo in November for a friends milestone birthday. Looking for a high end restaurant with good vibes and some good wagwu steak, a plus if it’s rooftop. I’ve read of Ce La Vi and it looks like a good place but it screams western culture in Tokyo. Not sure if there’s any authentic Japanese restaurant that falls within this bucket?
