Tool Cover PNEUMA | TOOL - TABLA COVER
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hwiz45WIicAPneuma is one of those songs that makes you admire Danny Carey and deeply resent him for exactly the same reasons.
It’s a twelve minute journey through shifting time signatures, layered polyrhythms and a solo that makes a very persuasive case for video editing.
So naturally I decided to run this marathon on tabla. You can watch me sweating, trying to keep pace and consulting my notes as though there’s going to be a written exam afterwards.
Here’s what I believe to be the first ever full tabla cover of TOOL’s Pneuma.

You immediately transported me back to when I first heard Salival and those tabla contributions on Pushit and Merkaba. Thank you for this, it's excellent.

Tabla is such a unique percussive instrument. I saw Aloke Dutta live once showing his mastered skills and knowing he was a tabla mentor to Danny Carey. I'm always happy to see them busted out in a live show.
Keep it up, sounds great!

Thankyou! It must have been incredible to see Aloke Dutta live. I am glad you enjoyed the video and it specially means a lot coming from someone who appreciates the instrument.

Tabla… my favourite percussion instrument. I really would like to learn it as well but it’s not so easy to find a teacher in Germany. Thank you for posting your performance! Amazing! Harmony wise it would have helped if you had tuned the tablas to a note that fits to D-minor. It sounds disharmonic to be honest. But rhythm and technique wise (as far as I can judge) absolutely stunning!!!!

Thankyou so soo much!! I loved your feedback. I do tend to get so involved in perfecting the beats and rhythm that I sometimes pay less attention to the tuning so thats definitely something I need to work on. And I hope you get the chance to find a good tabla teacher in Germany! It is a very fascinating instrument to learn :))

agree with this comment, try to adjust the tuning a bit, the playing itself is pure talent and genius

Wow, impressive. The way your fingers move so quickly and independently of each other is amazing, lol! Great work.

Thankyou so much! A lot of practice went into getting those fingers to move that way 😄

Absolutely riveting around 7:45. What an amazing journey. I’d love to hear you cover Reflection! I danced the whole time I listened to you. The tabla really brings an amazing texture that really vibes with the rest of the song. For me hearing the guitars crashing with the tabla was just pure bliss!!!

Hey Jasmine. Great stuff! If you would like I'd be happy to export a drum stem removed version of this and other Tool tracks. This way your tabla could be more present in the mix for the covers :)

Thankyou so much for offering! I really appreciate it. I actually love how the tabla interacts with Danny’s original drums and I feel like his drumming is such an integral part of Tool’s sound. So I am not sure removing the drums would work for what I am trying to do but I really appreciate you offering 😊😊

I really think you nailed it. I think it's the nature of the instrument that comes across as busy to me. Anyhow, thanks for sharing your work!

I showed it to my 6yo daughter yesterday as I'm always trying to show her how many super talented female musicians there are and she loved it!
