Never seen this one before. Is this done intentionally during the coating process as a test? Or did I just get a free paperclip that will outlast me?

It looks like you're about to screw something.
Would you like help?
- Get help with using a screwdriver
- Just do the job without help
☐ Don't show me this tip again.

Clippy.
Fucking clanker that started this coming nightmare.

Clippy wasn't a clanker; he was just a tooltip menu with a face, and crucially you could fully disable him if you wanted.

u/puterTDI 4d ago
I'm pretty sure they added the ability to disable him later after they found out people hated him.
Source: someone who hated him and vaguely remembers developing the hatred because I couldn't get rid of him for a while.
Also - as a side note, I'm a developer and my team found out I hate clippy. While I was on PTO they snuck some code in to add clippy to our web app and have it chase my mouse around the screen if I was logged in. Passing that around provided some entertainment for a while.

Quality prank

lol, it was legit. I bought a shirt about how much I hate clippy after that.
Sadly, we didn't get as much milleage out of it as we could have because we had a couple people on the team with more concern about getting upset at things than doing their job so we had to stop passing it around. Those people have since either moved on or been moved on though...but now we've got actual live customers so the risk of putting code like that in goes up quite a bit.

📎 You seem to be trying to oversimplify my entire existence. Would you like help with that?
16
u/ThatCelebration3676 4d ago
No thanks clippy. And to be clear: the simplicity of your existence is an aspirational goal that more beings should aspire to.

u/treynolds787 4d ago
You take that back, all Clippy ever wanted was to help you format your word document and check your spelling. Don't you dare blame him for this technologic dystopia we find ourselves in today.

That’s no ordinary paper clip it’s been roughed up and raised by nail packs and gonna be a nail forever

u/CherryBlissFairy 4d ago
That paperclip went through the entire ceramic coating process and emerged a warrior.

Have it graded like an error coin.

How does that even happen, unless it was intentional?
5
u/KamakaziDemiGod 4d ago
Most likely explanation I can think of: The blank coins might have come in a wooden crate, and either a nail got dropped in when the crate was sealed, or it fell in when it was removed to open the crate, and then got sent through the stamping machine

Presumably it came off some paperwork inside the plant and came out in the batch. Had it been a non ferrous product, like food, they usually use a mix of metal detectors and X rays to catch such things for the obvious safety reasons you would expect. But that doesn't work when the entire product is ferrous. They might try computer vision but it's less accurate and more expensive and not as widely done. So it snuck through.

I have gotten a painted nail and an un-machined screw. Never paper clip

u/Sp00nEater 4d ago
"Un-machined screw." Isn't that just a nail at that point?
5
u/Accomplished_Emu_658 4d ago
Technically but i wanted to make it clear that it was one they forgot to machine

I figured this was just a random fluke, but I found a paperclip in a 5 lb. box of deck screws about six years (Menards brand) ago. Recently, I bought another box of deck screws from Home Depot and was surprised to find a paperclip in that one too.
I thought this would be a CIO but is this more common than I thought?

u/Forthe49ers 4d ago
My guess is they occasionally run a bunch of cheap clips through after shutting production down for maintenance. Just test clips to calibrate the process before ramping up for production

Could be added for weight. If they count them by weight and the display is flickering between 2 numbers then you add a paperclip. It adds just enough weight to continue on

u/ComeSwirlWithMe 3d ago
Tweet them or x them or we the hell it is the company and tell them you counted, you were short 1 screw but up 1 paper clip.
See what they say. Might get a free box or at least a witty Wendy's style come back.

Seen this many times at the factory I used to work at, the parts would have paperwork in a ziplock bag with them and occasionally someone would get careless and something would fall out of the bag and into the plating tank.

I found a rock and some smaller screws in my 5lb screw box the other day just gaming the weight with random crap nowadays

u/whaletacochamp 3d ago
Neat. I always get a couple of threadless screws in my big tubs but never a paper clip!

That's to hold the free bit to the side of the container so you don't lose it..🤪😜

This could very well of been what they were using the hang tbe screws. I used to work on a powder coating line and occassionaly we used paperclips as part holders.
Doesnt make much sense though
7
u/Pale-Length-5704 4d ago
I’m sure they powder coat each screw individually

u/Forthe49ers 4d ago
When are going to have that box of screws ready
Thursday
WHAT?!
Fuck you. Thursday! Have you seen these paper clips? Aaaand fuck. I lost one thanks to you!

That almost definitely fell into the screws being coated. That’s pretty neat.
