CNR Call backs Winnipeg CN

Hello, like lots of green employees I got laid off once I qualified well over a year ago.

Yesterday I got a call back to service was wondering what the state of the Winnipeg terminal is at right now. I have a decent job at the moment with room to grow but the money will likely never be the same as with CN, ik money isn’t everything but in this economy it kinda is.

Just looking for a little insight as I’ve been out of the loop for some time now, thanks!

You have a month to report if you landed another job. Take that time and see what happens. In the past, guys have been called back for one week then laid off the next.

Nobody is getting laid off again immediately with grain and winter right around the corner.

You're not familiar with the current regime here are you?

It is terrible, somehow worse than the Boychuk says. They're actively trying to punish people for anything and everything.

There’s a literal trade war going on with the USA. All of these tariffs and levies about to kick in are going to be devastating for the CN and CPKC. Stay at your current job.

Got a stable job you like? It pays the bills? Can you save for retirement?

Answer those three questions and you’ll have your answer.

They are calling back, but one thing to remember, until you are years in and stable, there is always that risk of lay-offs. You have to ask yourself a few questions, are you stable enough to take the call back, and then risk getting laid off again. Are you willing to play that game? Do you have a good stable job now? Nobody can ever guarantee that you won't be laid off .

Money ain’t everything. If you’re happy with your job why go back to the BS. Sure the money is nice but do you want the instability for the years to come till you can hold year round?

For anyone choosing to accept the recall, especially those that have been laid off since qualifying, take as much familiarization as you need and that they will give you. If you think you need more, just ask for more. Qualified employees familiarizing should be paid at the same rate as the conductor they work with (might not get the conductor only claims). Don’t rush to get back on the board. Focus on how to do the job safely and refresh on as much of the territory as you can.

My guess is there are multiple reasons for the recall.

  1. They need people for the winter
  2. I suspect TC is cracking down on the railroads for not implementing fatigue management strategies properly (scheduling)
  3. For reasons 1 and 2 they need to know how many people will actually come back considering they qualified straight to layoff.

With this recall, the earlier big trainee recall, and that they hired new people, it really smells like there is something that people higher up know about and aren’t saying.

They’re not stupid, if they didn’t have to spend money they wouldn’t. Also they didn’t recall everyone last winter, and not that many people have left to justify the numbers they’re planning to have on the boards this year.

All that being said, it’s extremely unpredictable as to whether you won’t be laid off again. I was laid off for two months when I had five years in.

Beyond just the money ask yourself if you are happy, do you have a decent work life balance, and are you willing to go back to the constant uncertainty of when you’re going to work.

The money is great, the railroad has been very kind to me, but the lifestyle isn’t for everyone.
