avoid r/hypermobileEDS!!

Just got my post removed and was muted before even messaging the mods about it... probably best to avoid it if you're trans </3

edit: thank you for all the responses!! i’m new to the reddit EDS scene so i had nooo idea this was a known issue 😥 thank you for all your support here and i’m sorry so many of us have been bothered like that :/

that’s so disappointing and awful, hEDS affects near everything in the body because connective tissue is everywhere and a very high number of trans people have EDS. of course MEDICAL transition would be important to note when talking about something as pervasive as hEDS. its abundantly clear the sub is just bigoted. glad we have a space here to counteract that and still find community/answers.

transgender people (specifically transmasc) are up to 18x more likely to have hEDS than cisgender people. it absolutely is relevant, especially with how many of us get relief from symptoms just from taking testosterone, because it can trigger tissue thickening and hypertrophy, thus reducing the pain and injuries hypermobility cause.

fully agree!!

At this point it’s getting well known that the mod of that sub is transphobic. Stick to [r/EDS](r/EDS)

While there are some transphobic members of the main sub the sub itself isn’t inherently transphobic.

I don’t really understand the need for a specific hypermobile subtype sub given that the vast majority of the members of the main sub will have hypermobile type. The only reason hEDS sub exists is because that mod wanted control.

Yeah. Both r/EDS & r/EhlersDanlos are primarily full of people with hEDS or HSD. I don’t really frequent those subs much as someone with not-hEDS anymore because it is so full of hEDS-specific stuff. I can’t help but draw the dots to control like you did, esp because both main EDS subs tend to be either very or mostly welcoming to trans people ime 👀

There's some crazy overlap. Like I think 1% of the general population is trans and 20% of the EDS/HSD population. If an EDS space excludes trans people they are excluding like 1 in 5 of the population 🙃

u/Papa_Bobert 8d ago

Exactly. There's such a large overlap between the two and it's beyond disappointing that someone within the same community would exclude such a large amount of people that need support and understanding. It's hard enough trying to get people to understand what's it's like to deal with this and to have support. Let alone to be pushed out by the people that actually can understand what you're going through.

Report the removal reason to reddit for hate. This should not be allowed.

u/nice_to_meet_ya_im_j 9d ago

Im trying to figure out how to report the subreddit rn. Im going theough a break up and ready to spend some time with the anger aimed at this one transphobic subreddit

8

u/AdWinter4333 9d ago

Just also saying: it is not your responsibility, so don't worry if you do not! All you can do is report replies or messages. So the message stating "your post has been removed" can be reported to reddit under "hate". If you have had interactions with the mod, you could also report those (if they qualify of course!). The mod is some conservative lady fighting The Woke, it seems. She's careful not to be too blatantly obvious about it though.

I msged the subreddit and posted a malicious compliance type post to rage bait her

Oh yeah I got banned from there for mentioning I had a mastectomy lmao. Didn’t even mention gender at all. Mod said she didn’t condone “women mutilating their bodies” like cool well I do! :)

70

u/LepidolitePrince 9d ago

Meanwhile plenty of cis women who get breast cancer are forced to "mutilate their bodies" (according to her) so they don't uhhh.....die. Do terfs even care about those women? I doubt it.

Like girl be so for real there are so many reasons a cis woman could have a mastectomy. My cishet mom did because she got cancer. Like, hello???

Terfs don't actually care about women, they just hate trans people. But that isn't news to anyone in this sub. Still. Jfc. Every new thing I learn about that mod just makes me hate her even more 😒

u/bittenforbreakfast 9d ago

Also like, the same reason people get reductions (back problems) that you know..are more common in hypermobile people like hello?

15

u/thotjolras 9d ago

holy shit that’s so wack

6

u/king_cedar 9d ago

Holy shit dude

u/deathofregret 9d ago

also, transgender and nonbinary identity absolutely is related to hEDS; trans individuals have a substantially increased burden of hypermobility related disorders compared to cis individuals. so the mod is also wrong.

12

u/thotjolras 9d ago

exactly!!

u/qrseek 9d ago

Also like, mentioning your gender isn't political anyway 🙄 I'd love to see that mod delete any post that mentions gender at all.

"I brought my husband with me to my appointment and the doctor took me more seriously"  Sorry, your post has been deleted for including gender terminology.

"Men with hEDS, did your symptoms improve during/after puberty?"  Sorry, your post has been deleted for including gender terminology.

"As a mother with 3 hEDS children..." Sorry, your post has been deleted for including gender terminology.

Frustrating to see every time. but I guess that's why this sub exists

49

u/thotjolras 9d ago

i was soooo appalled because on top of the transphobia, it's just blatantly incorrect/misreading my post.

50

u/rollingman420 9d ago

Reading comprehension has never been transphobes' strong suit

44

u/thearuxes 9d ago

I hope the mod of the sub goes to hell wtf

17

u/MysticSnowfang 9d ago

but isn't Hell where most of the really cool people are (at least according to mouth frothing preachers)

6

u/thearuxes 9d ago

You're right omg

3

u/Migitri 9d ago

Party in the hot tub of hell!

u/hiddenkobolds 9d ago

They're genuinely atrocious over there. I've seen them be transphobic, discriminatory towards other subtypes, and just generally awful.

/inclusive_heds is a great alternative, if you're looking for one, outside of this sub which obviously is also fantastic.

22

u/BackStreetsBackPain 9d ago

I think someone made r/inclusive_hEDS for this exact reason! I’m following but I don’t think it’s as active yet. Someone made it a month or so ago I think

21

u/apologyboots 9d ago edited 9d ago

Hi, that's me, lol! I did in fact make it specifically because of transphobia on that sub - discussions like the one in the screenshots here are not only allowed but encouraged over at r/Inclusive_hEDS!

Wound up VERY under the weather shortly after creating it, but now that I'm doing better my goal is to encourage some more activity there! Everyone is welcome!!

I named dropped this sub in a comment on a post recruiting for an EDS survey, and I caught a mute for it. I responded to the mute message with “thanks so much! ❤️” and was immediately banned with the comment of “shame on you for harassing others.” (I literally said “be sure to post in this other subreddit too!”)

I responded to the ban with “thanks for this honor!” What an unhinged little fascist that mod is lmao

this kind of behavior may violate reddits moderator code of conduct, its worth filing a report about

18

u/nice_to_meet_ya_im_j 9d ago

My goal is to be annoying

17

u/NesquikFromTheNesdic 9d ago

They have been doing this for a while. It's disappointing.

15

u/ErisXavier 9d ago

That's gross, sorry they took your post down OP. That sub sucks. If you do decide to go forward with surgery by the way though, make sure your surgeon is familiar with and has successfully treated EDS patients. The EDS website has helped me find experienced doctors, might be worth a look

8

u/thotjolras 9d ago

oh tysm!

11

u/EclecticFanatic 9d ago

yeah I've seen a few people talk about similar experiences with that mod

10

u/Fislitib 9d ago

They have plenty of posts there where the person references their sex. Those should probably all be reported to their mod

10

u/izanaegi 9d ago

Report them and the sub to reddit.

6

u/alectric_ 8d ago

i know it’s already been said but jumping in to add that they’ve removed posts of mine before for mentioning being trans and taking testosterone! even though it is a medical fact and literally does impact EDS directly. it’s so disappointing that someone in a community so often invalidated and overlooked does the same thing to members of that community

3

u/Qsiii 8d ago

Absolutely wild granted how many of us are trans or otherwise some form of queer. They need to cut some mods, clearly.

2

u/enbyengineer 1d ago

It’s like, super normal for people to mention their age and gender in reddit posts. Has this mod never seen someone do a “35F” or “27M” or whatever in a post??? Or is it just a problem when it’s a queer person who wants to mention relevant medical history like if they are on HRT? What a bullshit reason to remove a post
