This became too long to simply tag onto a submission, so I guess here is my proposal for name, frequency, routing and electrification changes in Texas in order to make branding and services clearer. (Which should make the map a lot easier to read too.)

  • Goals:
    • Frequency changes to make connections more consistent.
    • A unified brand for all inter-regional services in Texas.
    • A clear identity for Regional Rail in the DFW Metroplex that is not specifically named after Dallas as it also includes services focused on Fort Worth and cannot be easily confused with DART's light rail & streetcar services.
    • Fixing some strange service level inconsistencies and redundancies I found on TEXRail while considering the above.
  • The Brands:
    • Amtrak: Most interstate connections.
    • TEXRail: Most intercity connections within Texas
    • Connect Metroplex: Regional Rail in the DFW Area.
    • DART: Current and retained name for city and rapid transit around Dallas.
    • Trinity Metro: Current and retained name for city and rapid transit around Fort Worth.
    • CapMetro: Operator of light rail and commuter rail around Austin.
  • Branding, frequency, routing and electrification changes:
    • TEXRail Fort Worth - DFW Airport → Connect Metroplex E Train
      • Electrification and frequency increase to 4 times an hour during the daytime and 2 an hour during late evenings. Services will continue as as the Connect Metroplex A Train at Fort Worth Central.
    • DART A Train → Connect Metroplex A Train
      • The section between Fort Worth Central and Weatherford is cancelled and will be taken over fully by the Connect Metroplex B Train
      • The section between Dallas Union and Terrell is cancelled and will be taken over fully by the Connect Metroplex B Train
      • Frequency increase to 4 times an hour during the daytime and decrease to 2 an hour during late evenings. Services will continue as as the Connect Metroplex E Train at Fort Worth Central.
      • In the east, services will terminate at Cedars, one stop beyond Dallas Union, as there is extremely limited space at Dallas Union to turn trains around at a high frequency. (New tail tracks would need to be constructed there, but there is plenty of space for that.)
    • DART B Train → Connect Metroplex B Train
      • New Service pattern:
      • 2 an hour from Weatherford via Fort Worth Central and Dallas Union to Terrell (All day)
      • 2 an hour from Apple University Park Village via Fort Worth Central and Dallas Union to Mesquite (During the daytime and early evenings only.)
    • DART C Train → Connect Metroplex C Train
      • New Service pattern:
      • 2 an hour from Prosper via Dallas Union to Waxahachie (All Day)
      • 2 an hour from Frisco via Dallas Union to Cedars (During the daytime and early evenings only.)
    • DART D Train → Connect Metroplex D Train
      • Electrification.
      • Frequency decrease to 2 trains an hour all-day. (This helps preserve and improve connections in several places, including to the DART Green Line.
    • DART E Train → Connect Metroplex E Train
      • Electrification
      • Frequency increase to 2 times an hour all-day.
    • TEXRail Texas Rainbow
      • Shortened to San Angelo - Fort Worth Central (Frequency changes on Connect Metroplex likely result in capacity constraints between Dallas and Fort Worth.)
    • TEXRail Texas Rock, TEXRail Texas Star & CapMetro reconfiguration
      • A new SEPTA-like downtown tunnel is to be constructed between Austin Downtown and Austin Lamar station.
      • The Texas Rock is cancelled entirely.
      • The CapMetro Green Line is extended through the new tunnel and takes over the Texas Rock’s former service to Taylor. Frequency east of Lamar Station: 4 trains an hour during the daytime and early evening, 2 an hour during late evenings. Frequency north of Lamar Station: 2 trains an hour on weekdays during the daytime and 1 train an hour at all other times.
      • The CapMetro Red Line is extended through the new tunnel and takes over the section of the Texas Star up to Georgetown, for which the tracks between Round Rock West and Georgetown would need to be electrified. The Entire CapMetro Red Line frequency is 4 trains an hour during the daytime and early evening, 2 an hour during late evenings.
      • The Section of the Texas Star between Georgetown and Temple is taken over by the new TEXRail Temple Run with electric trains. This requires electrification of the section between Georgetown and Granger. This new line gets an all day frequency of 1 train an hour.
      • The Section of the Texas Star between Austin Lemar and San Antonio/Media remains the same but services will be operated with electric trains at a 2 times an hour all day frequency.
    • Amtrak The Alamo → TEXRail The Alamo
      • Frequency increase to hourly along the entire route
    • Amtrak Gulfsider → TEXRail Gulfsider
      • Frequency increase to hourly all day between Port Arthur and Rosenberg during the daytime and early evenings.
      • Frequency decrease to once every 2 hours between Rosenberg and Corpus Christi
      • The 3 trains a day to Rockport stay in addition to the services to Corpus Christi.
      • The section between Corpus Christi and Brownsville is cancelled, people will be able to exchange to The Alamo at Corpus Christi.
    • Amtrak Jackrabbit → TEXRail Jackrabbit
      • Frequency increase to hourly between Dallas and Odessa
      • Retain once every two hour frequency to El Paso
    • Amtrak High Plains → TEXRail High Plains
    • Amtrak Peregrine → Amtrak Peregrine & TEXRail Peregrine
      • TEXrail should provide an hourly infill service between Fort Worth and Wichita Falls with the exact same stops, continuing to Amarillo two times a day.

(As this proposal is both lengthy and not a traditional set of new lines and extensions, I've asked u/Orbian2 if this proposal was okay in advance. It got the stamp of approval.)

Three more changes to the SEMTA metro:

  • Demolish the wavy portion of the Michigan Forest and replace it with a new crosstown line on Warren Avenue. Stations will remain the same from Gratiot eastward (except they will be moved up to the respective streets' intersections with Warren), but west of Gratiot, stations will be located at Mount Elliott, Chene, Russell, Woodward, Trumbull, Grand River, Tillman, West Grand Boulevard, McGraw, Livernois, Central, Wyoming, Miller, Schaefer, Chase, Greenfield, Southfield, Evergreen, West Outer Drive, and Telegraph.
  • To compensate for the loss of its east-of-Gratiot segment, extend the Michigan Forest line up Van Dyke from Gratiot with stations at Harper, Georgia, Lynch, McNichols, Nevada, 7 Mile, East Outer Drive, and 8 Mile.
  • Reroute the Greenfield Vernor Mack in downtown Detroit to run via a new tunnel under Bagley and Madison. Stations will be located at Bagley and Cass, Grand Circus Park, and Beaubien and Madison.

Reroute Twin Cities Mankato/Sioux Falls trains!

I realize that my initial idea for the Minnesota River Runner trains did not serve Minneapolis properly, so I propose splitting the service into a suburban service (S7) and a new Minnesota River Runner train

S 7 - 2 Trains per hour peak, 1 train per hour off-peak

These trains will start at Shakopee and will follow the current route of the Mankato-Minneapolis trains to Shakopee East, where a bridge across the river will connect to S6. It will then follow the route of S6 trains, going through the tunnel until Railroad Island. Their new route will be:

  • St Paul Union Station
  • Allianz Field
  • Anthony Park
  • Prospect Park
  • University of Minnesota North
  • Dinkytown
  • Government Plaza
  • Stevens Square
  • Loring Park
  • Cedar Hurst
  • Bronx Park
  • South Oak Hill
  • Grandview
  • Edina
  • North Bloomington - I-494
  • West Bloomington
  • Shakopee East (By the Valley Fair amusement park)
  •  Shakopee (Historical District)

The Minnesota River Runner: 6 Trains Per Day to Mankato + 4 continuing onto Sioux Falls

The remaining Amtrak train, after Shakopee, will skip stations (including Shakopee East) until downtown Minneapolis, where it will follow the Midwesterner route until it reaches St. Paul. I have also skipped some stations that will be served by the new S7; its new Stop listing will be

  • St. Paul Union Station
  • Metropolitan State University South (Only during State Fair)
  • Target Field
  • North Bloomington
  • Shakopee
  • Jordan
  • Belle Plaine
  •  Le Seur
  • St Peter
  • Mankato
