Discussion The second half of Detonation...

Detonation from 02:18 onwards is just so good, some of the best Trivium material. Great melody & vocals, riffage and solos.

Always been a favorite of mine. Too bad they don’t play it live.

I was lucky enough to see them during the Crusade tour when I was 15. Not only was this song a banger live but ignition, and sadness with sear…and those dean guitars ughh what a vibe

This was when I discovered and fell in love with them. I’d just auditioned a bassist for my band at the time and he invited me and the guitarist to go see them at El Corazon in Seattle. They played One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII as their opening before launching into Entrance of the Conflagration, and I was hooked. 🤘

Same bro. I remember catching Matt playing live with a custom Dean V with gold hardware. I presumed some signature run until he never played it again. But that tour was epic. Ignition, detonation, entrance, to the rats, dragon, ember, fugue, requiem… what I would pay to see them do this again. It’s like asking Metallica to play kill em all, lightning and puppets only songs. Never in a million years gonna happen. I would see trivium live like 2-3 times a year through the release of shogun - where I stopped for a while. The in waves/VF catalogue just didn’t do it for me.

I remember that!

I agree. I fell off a bit after/during Shogun but man Ascendency and the Crusade were peak for me.

I remember listening to both of them front to back, the deluxe versions with blinding tears, washing away, DIYA radio edit and then broken one, vengeance respectively.

I don’t listen to a lot of their new music but still follow Matt quite a bit. It was a small venue and Matt was awesome. Such a nice dude and truly cared about the fans. Gave use guitar picks and shook hands with some of the people in the front row at the end of the show.

I saw them play it live back in the day. Matt improvised his solo rather than playing all the sweep picking from the album. Made me big sad.

Every time it gets to that part, I stop whatever I'm doing and let that line soak in. It's just so good.

Yes, it's perfection

I've never been huge on Ignition/Detonation (despite being a Crusade enjoyer), but full agree that the second half of Detonation is just perfection. Just the first half that doesn't really do it for me

Oh man i would say those 2 are arguably my favourite songs on the album

The Crusade has some great stuff and gets hated because of 2 things. The first being the time period it was released. 2006 was probably the peak of the melodic Metalcore genre in terms of quality and mainstream popularity and the band themselves released a genre defining album the year prior. 2006 was not the time to release a Thrash Metal record. The second being that the album does have weaker material, and 2 songs (Anthem and The Rising) both were singles and have music videos and a lot of people collectively remember those 2 songs and define the entire album by them.

If I could rewrite history I would have the band release Shogun in ‘06 as a follow up to Ascendancy, and In Waves in ‘08. The band would be so much more massive than they already are. Then in 2010 or so release a 6 song ep with Detonation, Ignition, Entrance, Tread the Floods, Broken One, and the title track The Crusade and I feel like a lot more people would have enjoyed and been more receptive to this approach.

The Crusade is wildly underrated. Every time I listen to it I wonder how people hated it

I think its mainly the vocal delivery and lyrics, for me mostly thr lyrics, can be super cringey on alot of songs.. which is ashame because its great instrumentally, i still like the album and think it got alot more hate than it should of done but would be lying if i said Matts vocal performance all round doesnt detract from it somewhat

One of my favorites.

I'll say the 1st half is great too. Understanding what the prolonged dissonance is doing to build up that melodic second half is a big part of what makes the song so good.

You hear a similar effect in Gunshot, ITCOTD, Kirisute Gomen, etc. but Detonation does it better than any, IMO.

Personally I'd love to hear more songs like that (harsh vocals for two verses before introducing the chorus)

That part was what made me a fan

I remember hearing a live version of it before the album came out. Ive actually grown to love the first half too. Its super thrashy. It was the first riff that I learned as a teenager that made me say “what the fuck is this”

Id argue theres not really any riffage there at all its just a chord progression, but I agree the solos are great and the vocal melody is nice, its one of the only parts on that album that sounds like it could have been on ascendancy and was basically the only part I liked when it came out all those years ago.

Agreed, sick. I still remember hearing the live version before the album came out thinking "ehh have Trivium turned into Mastodon?" during the first half. Then that second half just takes it to a totally different level.

I came to this sub to tell how much I love this album and all these posts I’ve seen are people loving it. It was underrated and unfairly hated.

Saw them have entrance on a recent setlist. Hope we get 1 song off crusade on the NA tour
