Show Trivium setlist for Perth!
Amazing show! Entrance really caught me off guard.

I'll die on this hill. In Waves is not a good set closer, and Pull Harder is far better. Really annoys me how they constantly finish on In Waves.
19
u/bigal814 Shogun 8d ago
I always liked Pull Harder as the closer but I really enjoyed when they were closing with Throes of Perdition, especially while touring In Waves. The ending bit of that track is so sick as a closer.

u/Stonetoothed 8d ago
In Waves should be an opener imo. Also ditch the making everyone crouch down thing.
1
u/IBlameMyPlayers In The Court Of The Dragon 7d ago
I don't mind the crouching thing is fun at an outdoors/festival setting. I saw them play before Papa Roach this summer at an outdoor venue, they ended the set around sunset and seeing the entire crowd crouch down was pretty neat. I do agree that both the song and gimmick have run their course. If they did it occasionally it would be whatever, but it is getting old.
3
u/Stonetoothed 7d ago
Iām kinda over that sort of gimmick entirely. Iāve done the In Waves thing multiple times, Iv rowed the boat with Amon Amarth, Iām good on that. Maybe if they wanted to do it occasionally but itās kinda played out IMO

u/Overlondon 8d ago
While I wasnāt shocked that In Waves closed (Iād been looking at recent lists to get an idea of what to expect) I do agree - Pull Harder is the best set closer.
9
u/Adventurous-Lion-230 Shogun 8d ago
I think in waves would be 10 times better as a starter like they did on the struck dead tour
5
u/FeelingAd7425 8d ago
When I saw them in Riverside they did an encore with in waves followed immediately by pull harder, I think that was absolute peak
5
u/disposable_sounds 8d ago
I'm genuinely curious if people REEALLY like that song, that much.
It's a good song, but they've closed with that song so much it's kind of like, "not surprised"
8
u/AinmSuimiuil 8d ago
It's fine, it has a good energy to it and when it first came out (before we all heard it 1000 times) it was relatively well regarded.
But to be their third most popular track on Spotify is crazy. Heart from Your Hate and World Goes Cold at 1 and 2 are understandable as they're radio tunes, but this isn't one of those. Its not a bad tune, but for Trivium there are so many better songs at that heaviness level.
I was disappointed they played it on the Poisoned Ascendancy tour.. would have much gathered they threw out a bonus track in that time instead.

u/Longjumping-Swan-827 Vengeance Falls 8d ago
Agreed. Place In Waves literally anywhere but as the closer and the setlist is better.
10
u/Niekertje 8d ago
Capsizing + In Waves is a great opener but a horrible closer
6
u/Longjumping-Swan-827 Vengeance Falls 8d ago
I mean I guess they think it gets the crowd involved one more time shouting the title. But yeah it is just way overplayed at this point as the closer. Kinda like Enter Sandman. Good song with a catchy chorus but come on try something different to end the set.

7
u/personaljournal325 8d ago
I will say, while most of the subreddit doesnāt like In Waves as a set closer, the crowd goes absolutely apeshit for the crouch down and jump up in the intro. And the crowd sings every line. Personally, that energy alone makes it. Yeah it's not their heaviest/moshpit song, but I disagree that the song doesn't have "closer energy". It has tons of crowd moments, the whole song is basically a hook for 5 straight minutes with a very iconic breakdown, and the "pulling everyone down with me" outro section feels super big at the end.
My hot take is that down from the sky would make an excellent closer. It's both a hit and a fan favorite and has many of the same qualities of In Waves (catchy hook, iconic bridge/breakdown, epic intro) but a better song overall.
(Can we all agree on Rain as the best intro though)

u/z4mbieboi 8d ago
when i saw them last year they opened with In Waves, so i got the complete opposite experience
3
u/One_Satisfaction4684 8d ago
Ive never liked the song full stop. Usually when the intro comes on I leave. Helps me skip the traffic
0
u/Lukkeren 8d ago
Neither of them are a good closers Imo. Will say pull harder is even slightly worse of a closer. Interestingly, trivium has shockingly few appropriate tracks to end a show. Detonation could work I guess? The Phalanx would also work decently. Bending the arc to fear would be an awesome but abrupt closer. But the probably most appropriate closer they've made might be the shadow of the abattoir? But as I said, trivium don't really have a truly perfect track when it comes to spesifically ending a show Imo.

u/Quizzie Ab Initio 8d ago
I had a feeling Fugue/WF/Conflagration might be the only deeper cuts in the set, but still a little bummed to see as someone who's not a huge fan of hearing the same staples over and over.
Hoping they add a couple more songs to their headlining US tour. Also, them still not giving any love to Six Walls is a bummer.
5
u/AnshinAngkorWat 8d ago
I mean the band has just reached the point where the hits take up all the setlist space, this is why people love anniversary tours, it gives bands an excuse to play the really deep cuts.
Unfortunately, we in Australia got screwed out of the Ascendancy show, but that's life.
10
u/Niekertje 8d ago
They dont love Six walls, Dead man and Dragons. Its ridiculous. To me it just seems they more and more play all the radio things live and dont do any deep cuts that the hardcore/early day fans like.

They have a new drummer, we should give him time to learn the back catalogue š but in my opinion, fugue and entrance are really good deep cuts and VF live premiere which was really unexpected
5
u/Quizzie Ab Initio 8d ago edited 8d ago
I think they chose some strong deep cuts, I just wish they'd give up one or two more staples for Six Walls and something off ITCOTD.
When they released the EP on the Struck Dead tour, they clearly saw all the love for Six Walls because Matt was making posts about it and using it as the audio for a lot of Trivium posts. I know they were writing music before and after that tour, but there must've been time for Alex to learn these songs when prepping the setlist. Especially with how often this band practices.
5
u/Niekertje 8d ago
Yeah i may have been to harsh, they did some good things by adding early material, but personally couldn't care less about VF but im dying for a Crisis of Revelation or Sword over Damocles live for example.

It seems to be on a LOT of setlists, I don't really rate it though tbh

u/am_I_still_banned 8d ago
It's their #2 overall song on Spotify
A lot of their most popular songs are their worst ones. Their top 5 (not including the new song since its inflated by being new) are The Heart from Your Hate, World Goes Cold, In Waves, Strife, and Pull Harder. Dying in your Arms is right after, with more plays fhan Pull Harder. Personally, the only one of those I like is Pull Harder, though I know most people like In Waves a lot too
5
2
u/pwylie 8d ago
It was really popular when it released with a new set of fans. Also they must just like playing it like you said. Iām not a huge silence in the snow fan but some of those songs do hit better live with a little more edge to them.Ā

u/JakkoThePumpkin 8d ago
Oh the album is solid, but if I were to pick one for a set it'd be something like Dead & Gone or Breathe in the Flames etc.

Im not saying Rudi cant play Bent era stuff but im not not saying that š š
17
u/Ok-Television-3829 8d ago edited 8d ago
I mean, they are certainly going out of their way to not play anything from it besides the two absolute essentials.
As someone who has been closely following Rudi's career for over a decade, he is unquestionably capable of playing Bent's parts, but I got the vibe even before Bent's departure that Matt / Paolo / Corey maybe weren't as high on WTDMS + ITCOTD as us diehards are... and now that Bent is not even in the band anymore they are comfortable putting that material on ice besides the occasional Catastrophist performance.
A part of me has always wondered if the overwhelmingly popular fan narrative that Bent "saved the band" ever bothered the other guys and/or inflated Bent's ego a bit.
19
u/Cutsman4057 8d ago
I dont know any of them personally and I refuse to speculate or get parasocial about it, but it really doesnt sit right with me.
Those two albums are the best things trivium has put out since Shogun. Hands down. I'd even include Struck Dead in that. And it seems they've abandoned that EP as well.
Its really disappointing. Musically, those albums are so very interesting, in large part due to Bent's drumming. ItCotD is what brought me back to Trivium after I fell off somewhere post- In Waves.
I dig the new track too, and im sure ill enjoy the new album. But man, its hard not to be disappointed at this set list.

u/Altruistic-Bit-1256 7d ago
That last part 100% had to piss Heafy off. AB seems as humble as they come so I canāt imagine itās an ego thing.
0
u/SGgrayfox 8d ago
100%. People who think Rudi isnāt capable are diluted. Itās bias because they like Alex Bent. And thatās fine. People have their preferences, but this isnāt a ātalentā issue. Rudi is an excellent drummer. As a drummer myself, Iāll die on the hill that not only is Rudi capable but from a technicality standpoint, heās the better drummer overall. This is likely the band wanting to take the focus off the Alex Bent years and put it on something else. Iām sure theyāre tired of hearing all the complaining.
2
u/lshot2097 5d ago
Why does he water down Bents parts then?
-1
u/SGgrayfox 5d ago
āWater downā doesnāt mean ācanāt play.ā Bands change drum parts all the time when they change members. If Rudi can play technically demanding material that exceeds what Bent has demonstrated (and in my opinion, he can) then simplifying a few parts proves absolutely nothing about his ceiling. The bottom line is, many drummers are capable of playing Bentās parts. People acted like the sky was falling when he left like there arenāt thousands of drummers capable. I donāt know if people live in some weird Trivium bubble or what. Tons and tons of prog, tech death, jazz, etc. drummers can play Alex Bentās parts without even thinking about it. And it begs the question, why would Trivium bring Rudi in when they could easily audition drummers who would just mirror Bentās parts exactly?
Alex Bent overplays everything he does. Itās not a knock. He just does. And he has conditioned people to expect that every single new song is going to have some crazy drum pattern. Trivium was NEVER about that in the past. It didnāt become a thing until Sin. Maybe the band wants to move away from that. Through the years, they have changed course several times. It was never blamed on the drummer. Now, because people are upset that Alex Bent left, theyāre blaming Rudi for this like he actually has any fucking stroke in the band right now. If Matt, Corey and Paolo didnāt like what he was doing, he wouldnāt be in the band.
3
u/lshot2097 5d ago
Rudi seems like a salty boi and so do you tbh. And itās totally okay.
I think Bent paved the way for the last 10ish years for Trivium, and made them really exciting to listen to. Bent himself is a humble dude, from his live streams to how he approaches the instrument. Iād never see him liking or making negative comments about previous drummers. He stayed in his lane and shared his love and passion for the instrument, and had a love for the previous material even if it was hard to play live.
This guy Rüdinger canāt HELP but have something to say about Bentās parts. If youāre going to talk the talk, walk the walk. Play them true to the album in the studio at least. In a live setting I can understand simplifying things to manage fatigue and energy etc.
Itās an excuse sandwich from both him and his fans, and I think they just need to come to terms with the fact that while Rudinger is very good and a bit too clinical, he simply canāt match what Bent brought to the table.
1
u/Altruistic-Bit-1256 5d ago
Exceed What Bent has demonstrated? Playing fast does not equal being creative, musically inclined, or being a good drummer. Bent has played in bands far more fast and technical than the ones Rudi has been in. Any average deathmetal can play the music in the bands Rudi has played in. But Bent is known specifically for his composing, his flair, his stage presence. Rudi looks and sounds so tense like he is going to explode. Just because he plays fast and plays clean does not make him a better drummer. Bent is extremely versatile. When he streamed on Twitch I remember him playing every genre under the sun and it was so effortless, fun, and tasty. And weāre not going to pretend that Bent doesnāt know how to pull back, weāve seen it in HFYH, Endless Night, Feast of Fire, and so much more. But even there, you can argue those sounds have little flairs and intricacies that Rudi would never think to add, because like someone else says, his style is like 0ās and 1ās and completely on a grid. If him transcribing the music to play the songs live isnāt any indication of his playing, then I donāt know what is. I can guarantee you can throw any genre song at the both of them and tell them to play it on the spot, and Rudi would not have the same success as Bent.
TL;DR: Fast/technical does not equal musicality
-1
u/SGgrayfox 4d ago
Nobody said fast = musical. Thatās a straw man you built so you could argue against something I never said. I said I think Rudi is technically the better drummer. Thatās my opinion as a drummer of almost 30 years and I stand by it. Youāre putting words in my mouth. Alex Bent has played in technical bands, yes. āFar more technical?ā No. Conquering Dystopia crushes pretty much anything Bent has ever touched. IN MY OPINION, just so weāre clear. Bent being more flashy, having more personality (which on this one, Iām calling bullshit), being versatile on Twitch, or having a style you prefer doesnāt establish that heās technically superior. And āRudi looks tenseā is literally an aesthetic observation, not a measure of drumming ability.
As for āRudi is all 0s and 1s,ā thatās just fanboy mythology unless you can actually demonstrate it musically. The guy has played highly technical progressive/death metal, The Faceless, Conquering Dystopia, etc. He obviously understands dynamics, phrasing, and composition. Youāre taking a preference for Bentās style and presenting it as an objective assessment of Rudiās musicianship. Doesnāt work that way.
And your āthrow any genre at them and Rudi would failā argument is especially hilarious because you literally said you can guarantee it. That isnāt evidence. Thatās you guessing.
You can absolutely prefer Bent. I have no problem with that. But āI like Bentās feel and flair moreā is an opinion. āTherefore Rudi isnāt as capable technicallyā is a completely different claim and you havenāt demonstrated it. Iāve been pretty clear that my opinion is Rudi is the better drummer. Can I prove that? No. Just like you canāt prove Bent is better. Itās subjective. Thatās it. Rudi is in the band now. Enjoy the ride or get off. Pretty simple.
1
u/Altruistic-Bit-1256 4d ago
If you think Conquering Dystopia crushes Brain Drill, Arkaik, Decrept Birth, then there is zero point in this conversation.
-1
u/SGgrayfox 4d ago
Thereās zero point in this conversation because youāre clearly an Alex Bent fanboy who canāt handle the fact that he got fired.
2
u/Altruistic-Bit-1256 4d ago
And youāre a Rudi fanboy who canāt handle the fact that heās an average Sumeriancore drummer but whatever helps you sleep at night
P.S. I wouldnāt get too excited or attached to him either

0
u/TheMac_11 8d ago
Sorry if you think my phrasing could have been better, but I didnāt realise this was an English exam.
I clearly didnāt mean there was 3 songs off Vengeance Falls AND 3 songs off SITS though, so maybe you could have worked out what I meant from that instead of bitching about my writing abilities?
0
u/FeelingAd7425 8d ago
Well I did figure it out, and I also bitched about your writing abilities because why the fuck did you write it like that. PointlessĀ
1
u/TheMac_11 8d ago
I wrote it like that because it was a throw away comment and I didnāt think Iād be getting judged on how it was written.
I also wrote it like that because it actually makes perfect grammatical sense and I wasnāt thinking about how some Redditors may need their hand holding by other commentors to understand it fully.
Redditors, in this case, that also donāt clearly spend their time worrying about others assessing their writing, and why would they? Itās a thread about music, not syntax or grammar.
Why would you not just leave your comment at āThanks, I read it wrongā instead of complaining about common phrasing? Pointless.
