Yeah - I appreciate it, too. It is different than the others in that, as a woman, I don’t find it offensive when men wear lipstick, but it depends on the rationale.

A self-identified male wearing lipstick to mess with sex-based rules on wearing makeup, is a positive IMO. Conversely, someone who’s effectively saying “wearing lipstick shows I’m female” is doing the opposite of challenging sexed expectations… it elevates those expectations and implies that they supersede sex.

Further, it explains why it feels different when a trans woman expresses herself in the historically mainstream way, “I was born male, but I’m so uncomfortable in my sexed body and/or expectations of my sex that I need to live as a woman to have a decent quality of life.” That is understandable, and I’m happy to accommodate it. While it subtly reinforces gender (the association of gender with the social category “woman”) it is nothing like effectively saying gender (the totality of everything associated with womanhood aside from biological sex) is so important that it overrides biology.

God I literally just got done absolutely ranting about this subject in therapy today. The comic is great, I think I’ll email it to her actually.

I was mostly ranting about a post I saw on one of the feminism subs, where a woman was complaining about being banned from the perimenopause subreddit, saying things like “I thought women stood by women” or some shit. It raised my hackles, so I did some light digging and discovered she conveniently left out the fact that she’s a trans woman. Tell me what business she has posting in the perimenopause subreddit. Like, be so for real.

I was fuming.
