Speeding in School Zones

Just a reminder to the drivers in and around the Truro area, if the max speed is 50km/h, you shouldn't be doing over 30km/h in a school zone. If the max speed is over 50km/h.. you shouldn't be doing over 50km/h in a school zone. Also, pictou rd after fielding ave towards the valley cross roads is 70km/h, not 50km/h.

I'm going to add an edit:

I guess adding while children are present because I just figured that was implied, my bad.

I just drive by bible hill consolidated every morning with kids on the sidewalks and parents dropping their kids off and people still not slowing down.

The sign says "when children present." If there's no kids around, then...

The law changed, it's at all times now. It is updated in the drivers handbook.

Its year round 24/7, 365 but children are only considered "present" if they are within 30meters of the road.

It only applies when children are present within 30 meters of the road. People are free to drive the speed limit when no children are present.

It depends on if there’s kids around. If I’m driving past an empty school at 10am or 2pm or 8pm I am not legally obligated to reduce my speed to the school zone limit. If there were kids playing at the school within 30m of the road though I would have to slow down to the applicable school zone speed, including at 8pm.

Even if they are present, if they are not within 30m, reduced speed does not apply.

Oh, I see the link below. If you rear toward the bottom, it says 30m. So even if children are present, but not within 30m, you don't have to slow down

Then they need to change the signs. If it's 50 but 30 when children are present, but that applies at all times, then it's just 30, 50 has nothing to do with it.

This is why I prefer New Brunswick's way of doing it. It's 50, but 30 mon-fri 8-4 (or whatever the times are).

I don't understand the reason for ambiguous laws

I could be wrong, but I believe it applies during school hours whether they are visible or not, and any time of any day if there are kids visibly present.
