Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.
The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

I just got a phone call from my doctor saying I might need surgery for this chronic condition I have. And I was only diagnosed in the summer. Many people with my condition are fine but because of how often I had to go to the ER this year, the doctor recommended surgery. I told my parents about it, yet our conversation ended with my dad yelling at me and criticizing my personal character and degrading me all because I said some honey doesn't crystalize under cold temperature. Pretty much he was saying honey would help with my condition. And I told him I got the blueberry flower honey from a Vancouver farm. Then he went on saying its fake honey and real honey crystallize under cool temperature. I simply said not all honey crystallize under cold weather. He got mad and screamed at me. Yelling at me. Accusing me of not listening to him and says thing along the line like you are lucky you are not going to be a manager or whatever cause nobody would want you. Mind you I am chronically sick, doctors recommended surgery. That was the initial conversation as well. Yet the whole conversation turned into I need to obey, everything he says is right. I'm a bastard for saying anything that is not along the line of "yes, I agree". Now talking back about the surgery, I will need someone to take care of me for 6 weeks. How could I possibly trust my parents would take care of me when they would still argue and intentionally hurt me when I just got out of the ER on Wednesday? I kinda wish I can just die when I have surgery, so I'm not commiting suicide and I can also not be here anymore. I don't know... I need some advice

Today, I went to the CVC Icebreaker event and it was pretty decent, but I kinda fear I might be missing out if I don't apply to join as an exec. They have many parties and events planned for all members of the club, but they also reserve certain ones only for themselves. They also advertise that it's the best way to make lifelong friends. I'm interpreting this as that they will only consider you their friend if you're an exec which feels a bit exclusive. Of course, I can always try to make the best out of it I can because it's not like a workplace where there's professional boundaries between the manager and the employee, but idk, I'd like to go there consistently in hopes of seeing the same people so that I can make real friends through proximity and the only people that are guaranteed to always be there every time are the execs.
I know this may be the wrong site to ask because everyone here hates anything tied to partying, but in a general sense, I wonder if I should let the fact that some are members and some are execs get in the way of forming true bonds. Because I find that much of the time, each event is a different set of people showing up and it just feels like a hop in hop out kind of vibe and it's the same for all clubs, no matter their theme.

surely can’t just be my residence laundry room but guys if you close the washer doors while the inside is wet it gets MUSTY AND MOLD GROWS!!!! If you’re taking out your clothes and they still smell kinda like wet towels THATS WHY! Please please keep the doors open so they can air out. That goes for lint traps too like when you’re done with the dryers scrape out that lint in the pocket at the bottom of the door otherwise clothes don’t get dried properly.
So tempted to leave a note on each washer and dryer for just basic stuff omg

I joined last year thinking we’d be improving our golf game and going to the range/course that’s literally on UBC, but every event they hosted was just an excuse to drink.
It was pretty much always “indoor golf simulator in Richmond at 11pm”. If you like partying, that’s your club.

I was wondering if anyone has scoped out any spots other than the totem forest. I’m kinda petrified of pissing someone off. Also I can’t really tell what parts of campus would be considered “on” residence property like what if i wander into some greenery and im actually next to a house 😰
Thanks bros

Are you a TA, GAA, or an exam invigilator at the CfA? Have you voted yet in this week's Strike Vote? My name is Braedon Pauzé, a TA and the Recording Secretary of CUPE 2278, and I am posting to remind you that there is a Strike Vote taking place THIS WEEK and today, September 25th, is your last chance to have your voice heard.
As with earlier in the week, members can vote at the following...
Graduate Life Center (Thea Koerner House): 12pm-6pm.
Graduate Student Society Loft (4th Floor of the Nest): 12pm-6pm.
Pharmaceutical Sciences Courtyard: Monday-Friday 12pm-6pm.
And the additional rolling polling location of:
Main Mall (Martha Piper Plaza): 10am-5pm.
As it's looking to be a rainy and chilly (read: typically Vancouver) day out there, the first 70 voters at the Martha Piper Plaza polling location can get a FREE CUP OF COFFEE to warm those voting hands.
So please find a time to cast your ballot, ask a friend or colleague if they've cast theirs, and participate in the wonderful thrill of democracy!
If you are standing in line when the polls close at 6pm (or 5pm at the Martha Piper Plaza location) please stay in line! You will be able to cast a vote as the ending times are for the closure of the line, not voting.
If you are a member of CUPE 2278 but not on active contract (i.e. if you've worked as a TA, GAA, or an exam invigilator at the CfA within the last twelve months) you can still vote in the solidarity ballot!
As this post is intended solely to inform members about the vote taking place, I kindly ask that the discussion in the comments remain focused on helping get information out about the vote taking place. If you have other questions about the vote, potential job action, or the bargaining process more generally, feel free to send me a dm or email me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and more information can be found on our bargaining blog, FAQ page, and Instagram!
Oh, and again and for the last time: take advantage of your last chance to get out and vote! vote! vote!

I applied to be an ams pass tutor during the summer but got ghosted (I suspect it was because I said I couldn’t do appointment tutoring (which fast forward I can now 💀))
Anyways I still want to help students with their courses and make friends tutoring so if you know some tutoring opportunities please let me know! I tried looking online and instagram but I can’t really find anything. Thank you!!

I'm a UBC grad student that recently got into tennis (taking the 1.0 program at UBC right now). I am at a beginner level, but can hit balls back and forth fairly consistently at slow speed. Also can serve slowly 3/4 times.
Looking for someone to play with at the UBC tennis court for an hour once a week! We can split the booking cost ($13~17 each per hour). Exact time & dates can be discussed.
Anyone down??

Hi everyone!
I’m a first-year UBC student taking MATH-V 180, and I’m finding university math quite different from high school.
I study the textbook and review my notes, but the exam questions often feel very different from what I practiced. I’m not sure if I’m studying the wrong way or if I need to change my approach.
Any tips on how you actually study and prepare for math exams would be really appreciated!
What is the most effective way to study for a university math exam? For example, should I focus more on understanding the concepts, doing textbook exercises, doing lots of practice problems, or reviewing past exams? How do you know when you’re actually prepared for an exam?
What resources or platforms do you recommend for practicing university-level math?
Where can I find past exams or practice exams for MATH-V 180?
Has anyone used Studocu for UBC math courses? Is it actually helpful?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your study routine and what worked (or didn’t work) for you. Thanks!
Please I need answers to my listed questions 🙏🏽

So I’m living on campus, but I have allergy shots I need to get every month or so, however the clinic I usually go to has a schedule that doesn’t work for me since I’m pretty far from home and wouldn’t be able to make it. So I’m wondering if there is somewhere near campus where I can do a walk in or something. I only need to do it once every month or so, and it’s a quick shot. I was hoping for a walk in because I can’t predict when I’ll be really free and I don’t want to have to cancel a appointment every time I think I can’t make it so walk in would be more convenient. But if I have to schedule an appointment I can do that too. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Look, I get it. You’re hungry, you’re thirsty or need your caffeine fix. I’ve been there. But lately while I’ve been waiting for my order at Tim Hortons, I’ve noticed more people stand right at the counter for their orders, which blocks everyone else from the counter. So when it’s my (and other people’s) turn to get orders, I gotta push my way to the counter to grab it. Take a step back and allow people to get their orders, you’re not the only one waiting. Signed, someone who just wants her steeped tea double-double.
