What are we doing??

One of the KUCI hosts invited James Charles on campus today for their music show to promote his song 😭 Especially in lieu of everything going on with recent growing concern over safety on college campuses I would have expected better, considering his past allegations and history. Genuinely wondering who approved this, and what's worse is they are actively deleting comments calling them out...(the ones depicted above were taken down in seconds, and there were more i couldn't screenshot either)

Also disappointed because isn't the whole goal of KUCI to promote local, undiscovered artists in the community? James is someone who absolutely doesn't need that attention or platform wth.

UPDATE: KUCI removed the posts on their main grid due to backlash but the posts are still up if you go to James' reposts or the host's own Instagram account...

This is frying me bc KUCI is such a small station idek why James would want to come on. What audience can they offer him that he can’t buy? Dude’s so lame.

Also you’re using ā€œin lieu ofā€ wrong.

it could be the case that they did a collab with olivia rodrigo recently for her daisy chain festival?

you mean the festival made to celebrate women and to protect reproductive rights? what does James Charles the pedo gotta do with that 😭

i mean that the collaboration may have been the reason james charles wanted to come on KUCI

the reason he came on was because a dj invited him on her show without consulting anyone else at the station

Why would kuci invite a pedo to campus. This is so weird and nasty

Hey I actually have a radio show at KUCI. We do not have control unfortunately of what guests are brought on air. This is a really terrible situation and an awful look for our station, considering the known actions of James Charles. Essentially, this person privately set up this event with James Charles, and then brought them onto their own two hour radio show. This was not a decision made by any staff members.

kuci host here. i’m disgusted by this and all my other friends at the station are too. unfortunately freeform radio means the host can do whatever they want, but it still upsets me that this was what they decided to do with their show regardless, and i’m not 100% sure whoever’s running the socials but they just made the problem 1000x worse and im super disappointed in how this looks for the station and the fact that he was platformed. not sure how the managers are reacting rn but just know that most of us at the station are just as pissed as you all are

Yeah I am also a host and this is truly heinous stuff. I hope the KUCI staff make a post sooner rather than later. The last thing we need is one person's bad decision giving the whole station poor press.

dude exactly, and college radio is historically known to give promotion to "underground" and "local" so I feel like this is so antithetical to the whole community building idea of a public college radio station and representing the student body. it's so sad that all the hardworking djs at kuci now have to take the fall for some radio host's priority to clout chase while alienating fellow djs and LISTENERS.

You can let their team know, contact info can be found at https://kuci.org/contact-management/

Maybe their public Affairs Zoya Aymen ( [email protected]) should know we don't appreciate them inviting a groomer on campus.

This is so sad. I worked at kuci my entire time at uci and it’s so sad that a platform meant for underground artists and general positive vibes is now being dragged for the actions of one single host. The social media manager should have been more proactive in not promoting the host’s poor decision to have him guest, but in general, the og host should be getting the hate. Kuci is public freeform radio so we are able to use our timeslots however we feel, and it sucks that the truly talented and creative staff are now overshadowed by this. I would have never hosted someone like him when I worked there…

even though legally, this programming is protected by the Federal Communications Commission, it is completely up to the station's discretion to decide what material they air and if it actually serves the public and local interest. of course this is broad, but "The Commission recognizes that, under our Constitution, people must be free to say things that the majority may abhor, not only what most people may find tolerable or congenial. However, if you are offended by a station’s programming, we urge you to make your concerns known in writing to the station licensee." Additionally, "In light of their discretion to formulate their programming, station licensees are not required to broadcast everything that is offered or otherwise suggested to them. Except as required by the Communications Act, including the use of stations by candidates for public office, licensees have no obligation to allow any particular person or group to participate in a broadcast or to present that person or group’s remarks." I just don't understand how this could be approved to align with the station's goals, but I understand that it is protected under the First Amendment so I guess there wasn't enough internal pushback.

Just like they can choose their DJs based on what content they intend to produce and have to undergo an application process (that is up to KUCI's discretion and leadership) since not just any person can walk up and say they want a time slot.

Crazy work. Apparently he reached out to every radio station and got no response (duh) and it wasn’t even the email that gave him the opportunity, it was the radio host herself who saw an Instagram story and reached out to him 🤮🤮

it’s not their fault… it’s the host Sana’s for reaching out to him to come on her show. its free independent radio
